T
he WMA Se ries' second round ran in conjunction with the AMA Na tional series
opener at the 36th annual Hangtown Classic.
Not only was this round two, it was also the
WMA International event. Riders from several
other nat ions travel to the United States for
this event only.
When the gate dropped for mote one,
Honda pilot Jessica Patterson nabbed the lead .
She had close company in the form of Tarah
Gieger. round -one winner Sarah Whitmore,
Philo Petricig and Tania Satchwell. Gieger went
to work and started to move on Patterson.
Wit h the pressure o n, Gieger took the le ad
halfway through the first lap. Whitmore started
to move fo rward and get into the mix, but she
went down and lost several positions. T his
allowed the second AGP Yamaha rider,
Satchwell, to take over third and gain some
ground on the leaders.
It took ano ther lap, but Patterson set up
G ieger and retook the lead . By lap three,
Patterson had a small lead , but Gieger.
Satchwell . Petricig and Whitmore were all
running fast lap t imes. A few short corners
from the finish line, Whitmore went down for
the second time; the fo ur-st ro ke gremli ns
came into play and put her a lap down before
she could get started again.
Me anw hile , Pat te rso n stepped It up and
pulled away. Satchwell gave Gieger fits fo r
second, and on the fourth lap she went for a
pass , and they both went down. Gieger was
the first to get going again and didn't lose any
positions . Satchwell was not so lucky: She lost
several positions before getting res tarted .
Meanwhile. the battle for second heated up .
Geiger was the first to move around Petricig ,
and then Whitmore made the pass in the next
corner. Pe t ricig said " no way " and passed
Whitmore r ight back . They went at it for
another lap be fore Whitmore finally made a
pass that stuck. Whitmore now had about a
second -and-a -half gap to make up to catch
Gieger, but she made up the deficit quickly and
challenged Gieger fo r second all the way to
the end, but Gieger held on to the position.
Behind them , there was a major battle for
fifth, between Lemp and Stefy Bau. The two
traded posit ions no less than seven t imes
during the mota, with Bau tak ing the spot by
less than two bikelengths.
