AMA/WMA National Championship Series Round 2 : Hangtown Raceway Patterson Dominates Hangtown Patterson held on (or the win. In moto two, another Honda rider, Pe tricig. took the early lead and the Sick Racing Holeshot Award. Right behind her were Patterson, Kaide Garrett, Gieger. Birgit Lemp and Whitmore. Patterson made an early move and took the lead and checked out. By STEVEN BONNAU SAC~ENTO ,CA,MAY16 T he WMA Se ries' second round ran in conjunction with the AMA Na tional series opener at the 36th annual Hangtown Classic. Not only was this round two, it was also the WMA International event. Riders from several other nat ions travel to the United States for this event only. When the gate dropped for mote one, Honda pilot Jessica Patterson nabbed the lead . She had close company in the form of Tarah Gieger. round -one winner Sarah Whitmore, Philo Petricig and Tania Satchwell. Gieger went to work and started to move on Patterson. Wit h the pressure o n, Gieger took the le ad halfway through the first lap. Whitmore started to move fo rward and get into the mix, but she went down and lost several positions. T his allowed the second AGP Yamaha rider, Satchwell, to take over third and gain some ground on the leaders. It took ano ther lap, but Patterson set up G ieger and retook the lead . By lap three, Patterson had a small lead , but Gieger. Satchwell . Petricig and Whitmore were all running fast lap t imes. A few short corners from the finish line, Whitmore went down for the second time; the fo ur-st ro ke gremli ns came into play and put her a lap down before she could get started again. Me anw hile , Pat te rso n stepped It up and pulled away. Satchwell gave Gieger fits fo r second, and on the fourth lap she went for a pass , and they both went down. Gieger was the first to get going again and didn't lose any positions . Satchwell was not so lucky: She lost several positions before getting res tarted . Meanwhile. the battle for second heated up . Geiger was the first to move around Petricig , and then Whitmore made the pass in the next corner. Pe t ricig said " no way " and passed Whitmore r ight back . They went at it for another lap be fore Whitmore finally made a pass that stuck. Whitmore now had about a second -and-a -half gap to make up to catch Gieger, but she made up the deficit quickly and challenged Gieger fo r second all the way to the end, but Gieger held on to the position. Behind them , there was a major battle for fifth, between Lemp and Stefy Bau.
