Th e eve nt's spon so rs includ ed Motion Pro , Top O il, Engine s Only, A&A Racing, K&N Filte rs , Kane moto Racing, Rod Lake Racing, P&D Promotions, A1pine stars , Parts Un limit e d, Braki ng, Hap Jo nes, Saddleman, Z Galleries. and Berkeley Hon da Yamaha A lo ng way fr o m ho me , Illinois' N o r m Gru ber trave led first to New Mexico to ride an A H RMA even t and t he n o n t o Tular e, Ca liforn ia, to con test Eddie Mulde r 's West Coast Vintage Dirt Track event. He en ded up in Br e nt w o od , Ca lifo rnia. Gru be r a lways want ed t o ri de t he C a lifo r nia ve nues , so Gr uber and his w ife (having raised two sons w ho be came Pro Ex pe rt riders) finally saw their California dream come true: At age 74, Grube r rode t his short tra ck , leading half the laps before be ing passed by Mickey Alzola, The Sportsman 600cc race was exciting. jaso n Nanisi (o n Butch Cochran's Honda) and Jim Monegan co mpet ed fierce ly for the lead . Monegan held first throughout the race , but Na zz isi wa s fi rst to t he fini sh line af ter ove rta king Monegan exiting the last turn. Russell Flranzl put on a show in the 70s Singles class. Monegan rod e hard to try to win this one , but he wasn't fast enoug h to catch Firanzi. The Vet event saw "Boo Boo " Bob Scalley riding "O ld Trusty " to the finish first, follow ed by Mo negan and jerry Kenned y. John Frank disconne ct e d his brake of his vintage She rpa for the Classic 250cc event and w o u nd up finis hin g fir st. W it h t he br a ke recon ne ct e d, Fra nk lined up in t he 250cc Sports man eve nt and worked his way throug h the pack and then showed the m the fastest way a rou nd th e t ra c k. Randy Kre m lacek , w ho whimpe red abo ut his 250's performance on th is tra ck, took third, behind Robe rt Stuscavage. Mike Van Linden ex ci ted e veryo ne o n Su nda y 's T T t rack , r id ing fast and ha r d , his Iconoclast ZX6 R. Both are MRA veter ans, and th e racin g was clo se an d ente rta ining. Alas. Mr. Bake r was a few places be hind th em on his tw o-stroke but causing a grin for every rea l enthusiast in atte ndance . Beyond t he RZSOO, race classes feature RS125s, as well as twins an d mu lticylinde r b ikes o f a ll config ura ti o ns . While som e organ ization s ar e limit ing t hei r classes, th e MRA is promot ing the dive rsity in machinery while providing a ste llar family environment . The money maker, the prem ier class of the MRA, is the Race of the Ro ckies, w hich is basically a run-whar-you-bru ng class featu ring all sorts of high-power Superbikes that even a factory rider wou ld gri n about after riding. Th is is th e clas s t hat le aves all th ose t iny rubbe r patches melted into th e track as t he shifter is act uate d . Spotlight ing t his se ries is local he ro Ricky O rlando , who just earned a si xt h -p lac e fin ish in t he Dayto na 200 . Camp aigning aga inst O rland o ar e se aso ned riders such as Denn ie Burke , Ryan Burke, Dan overtaking Scalley to win t he Senior class. David Nicholson and Ken Co pe made the Classic 500cc TI eve nt as exciting to watch as a ny Pro Expe rt e vent. Fro m the start, Nicholson was in front. Cope gained ground on Nic hol so n, an d t hey ca me o ve r t he jumps together, trad ing th e first spo t bac k and fort h on t he straights . Cope took t he win, Nicholson was second , and jo el Sw een ey finished th ird. Alzola got th e holeshot in the Super Senior even t , fo llo w e d by N ic k C os io . By the first jum p, Monega n was be hi nd Alzo la, clo sely w orking him for a shot at t he fro nt spo t . Monegan was first to the checkers aboar d his two -stroke, and Alzola was the first Senior over the line. Hank Cosio and Gruber followed. In the ' 70s Singles TI, Firanzi was fourth into t urn one, but by the end of the first lap he wa s le ading t he pack. Fre d Be nn e tt stayed close in second, co ming alongside Firanzi, but Firanzi had the edge to pull ahead and win this race . Bennett was second , followed by Maury Austin and Fuzzy Beeching .
