AMA/Air Nautiq ues National MX Champianship Area Qualifier Steel City USA Browning Bastes 'em in the Mud By JASON WEIGANDT DELMONT, PA, APR. 24·25 he area's be st amate ur tale nt ven ture d to Steel C ity fo r a sho t at q ualifying for th e AMNPJr Nautiq ues Amateur National Champio nships at Lore tt a Lynn's, but , unfo rt un ately, Mother Nature's worst came along for the ride . T he No rtheast Area Qualifier ran o ver th e course of two days, and wh ile the co nditions were almost ideal for Saturday 'S mat os, the rain started Sunday morn ing and bare ly let up fo r the rest of the day. The Racer Productions crew did their bes t to save the track by speeding up the moto s, packing in the loamy Wes te rn Pennsylvania so il and cutting o ut th e most tr e acherous parts of the course. How ever, as co nd itions worsened, T t he decis ion was made to drop several of Sunday 's second mo to s fro m the program. Regardless of the weather, the favorites still rose to the to p. Ohio's Willy Browning showed up to batt le wit h AMA District S's best, and he co llected the 125cc and 250cc Pro Sport classes over top A r iders such as Kev in Ho ge an d Sa mmy Holland . Browning was n't eve n attempti ng to qu alify fo r t he Lo re tt a Lynn's pr ogr am , but his dou ble w ins w e re no doubt con fidence boos ters. Ho lland and Hoge didn' t make it easy for him, though. Hoge put up a great fight in th e first 2S0cc Pro Sport mo t o , gra bbing t he holeshot and holding Browning at bay mos t of the way unt il a late- race pass put Bro wning out fron t w hen it counted. Moto two was a much muddie r affair, and Browning held off Holland Gaylon Dick son w o n the Over 35 and Over 25 cla sses and placed secand in the Over 30 contest a t the AMA/Air Nautiques National MX Cham pio nship Area Qua lifier in Delmont, Pennsylvania . to complete a two-mota sweep in the rain . The 125cc Pro Sport race ended similarly in th e first mota , w it h Brown ing ho ld ing o ff Holland and Hoge for the win. But the rem atch in mota two never materialized, as the second set of mot os for several classes w ere canceled as the rain continued to fall. In Youth competition , Walker Brightwell and Shawn Rife led the way in the 65cc and junior escc classes. In Senior Mini act ion, justi n Weeks romped to four w ins on the w ee kend, including the BScc ( 12- 13) Stoc k and Modified classes and even the Supermini class , against 14- and 15year-o ld riders . At the oppos ite end of the spectrum , Vet rider s Gay lo n D ickson and St eve Childress waged some wars in the age classes. Dickson , a lo ngt ime D5 fro nt -runne r, struck first with a w in in the Over 25 class, using a good start to his ad vantage. Child ress answered ba ck by win ning th e first Over 30 m oto ; it was a gra t ifyi ng vict o ry for C hildress , who took seve ral A-class titles at Lo retta's back in the late I980s and is now trying to make a comeback. But while the favor ites reigned in o t her classes, th e rain itself ruled others. T he mud may have given so me r ide rs o n th e bub ble a pass to the Region al C hampionship , but th e r o a d wi ll onl y get ha r de r at t he Re g io na l Champions hips in Virginia an d Pennsylvania . Only the strongest will survive through those and earn a spot at the National Cha mpions hip at Loretta Lynn's. RESULTS Sa t u r d a y 51 (4-6) STK SHAFT: I. Trentin He rrington (Co b); 2.
