Despite competition for attendance in the area, there were still more tha n 65 riders compet ing. As is always t he case at this facility, t he t rack was w ell-g roomed a nd re ady fo r a night of excite ment. And although it's always exciting to wat c h t he big bikes compete in t he Open Expert and Money races , on this night the most excitemen t came from tw o young boys cornpeting in the 65c( class: Bronson Bauman and Ty"Weasel" Hickman. With the nash of the green light at the start of the 6Scc Novice race , Bauman and Hickman rocketed off t he line. Bauman had a small lead com ing into the first tur n, but Hickman got a whee l under him. Bauman tu rned the throttle coming out of the turn and gained a few feet on Hickman, on ly to have Hickman challenge him again in ea ch t urn. The fen ce was lined with people chee ring as t he two fron t -ru nne rs turned each corne r. Bauman too k the checkers first. In th e 6Scc Op en eve nt. Bauman jumped th e lig ht and was pu t in t he cheat er's bo x. Hic km an had the lea d , a nd t he race we nt ' exact ly the same as the 65cc Novice race , only wit h Hickman getting to the checke rs first. Eve nly match ed in their riding skill and their speed , only three po ints separate these two in this high-po int compet ition . In the as cc Expert class, Brian Bauman got t he holeshot off t he line and too k this race (rom po le to pole . Just in Petz got aroun d Den nis Trentman to finish seco nd. Pe tz came back to win the 100cc Modified class, followed by Tre ntman and Brian. Vintage Expert points leader Johnny Larson finished first in the heat race. In the main event. John Frank absconded with a great holeshot on his Wo o d -frame d TT500 . Vance Fe licio followed Frank, but it wasn't long before Larso n was a ble to ta ke advan tage of a bobbl e o n Felici 's part to earn himself the second spot . o Greg Ho ot en too k th e first sp o t in th e Drvision On e Speed way even t. Robert Mello r had a go od lead in one of the races but was pushe d into th e hay bales , bend ing his fork tub es a nd fr am e un til the fron t w hee l was pushed into the head of his moto r. Th is series began in January at New Iberia, and t he chase for points we nt th rough Lo range r, Lo uisiana; Fern wood , Mississippi; Gonzales, Louisiana; Kentwood , Louisiana; and ended at Breaux Bridge. The wea ther and tr ack were spo t on. Vendo r row was filled, and the grandstand s we re electric with expectant fans.
