SANDERSON WILKES-BARRE, PA, FEB. 28 onnell's Suzuki's Nick Metca lf and Plano Suzu ki's Charlie Bogard wo n the 125cc and 250cc Pro/ Expe rt main events, respectively, on Saturday night, in fron t of a se llo ut crowd at ro und 10 o f Clear Ch a nne l Ente rta inment's Reg iona l Aren across Se ries at th e Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Metcal f almost made it a cle an swe ep o f both classes, as he gat ed fift h in t he 25 0cc Pro/Expe rt main and began met iculously picking off ride rs until he took th e lead o n lap e ight . Metcalf quickly began to put distance betwee n him se lf a nd sec ond plac e by bl it z ing t he mon str ou s w hoo ps. Met calf wa s clea rly t he fastes t rider in the whoops all night, but disaster struck on lap nine as Metcalf went down exit ing the Catapult. Bogard too k runner-up honors in the 125cc main event. Stone leads Empire Racing's Jim Cheste r by 20 points with tw o rounds left. Katin trails Chester by a mere 15 points. Katin led the sta rt of the I25cc Pro/Expert main, w it h St on e , Ch est er, Bogar d and T im Hollenbeck in tow. O n lap two , th e top three re mained unchanged , but behind them Metcalf made the pass for fourth on lap four, relegating Bogard to fifth. Metcaif the n passed Cheste r for th ird . Met calf use d t he whoo ps to make t he pass o n Stone on lap six to take the runner-up spot . Bogar d was do ing th e rhyt hm-sec tio n tr iple while nobod y else att e mpted it, passing Cheste r the re to take fourt h. When the tw o laps-to -go marker came out, Metcalf was side by side with Katin over the Catap ult, but Katin cam e up a little short, and Metcalf took th e lead . Bogard moved up to third and then passed Katin on t he last lap to take se co nd. Met calf he ld on for the win, with Bogard, Katin, Stone and Cheste r trailing. Katin got anothe r holeshot and led the start o f t he 250cc Pro/E xp e rt main, w it h Sto ne, Aaron Dieter, C hest e r a nd Metcal f t railing. Katin had a th re e -se cond adva nta ge by la p th ree . Stone and Die te r we re holding second and third when Metcalf passed Chester to take fourt h, O n lap five, Metcalf passed Diete r over the rhyt hm-se ction triple to take third. O n the next lap , with a litt le he lp from lappe d traffic, Metcalf passed Stone for runne r-up. Metca lf closed the gap on Katin and made the pass for D 68 t he lead o n la p e ight. Me t c a lf blitzed t he w hoo ps and blew by Katin like he was sta nding st ill. But o n th e followi ng lap, Metcal f went do wn ex it ing the tricky Catapult se ct io n and we nt d o wn . Kati n in he r ited t he lead but co uldn't hold off Bogard, w ho made the pas s for the lead o n the last lap and cruised to the win. Katin, Stone, Chester and Diet er rou nded out the top five. Central Oregon Winter MX Series Rou nd 3: Ma d ra s Mo tocross Rookstool Rules the High Desert Bv CLAV LIGHT MADRAS, OR, FEB. 28 outhe rn O regon's Kevin Roo kstool made a rare appearance at Madras Motocr oss, se rving notice to the co mpe tition that there's a new king in t he Int e r me d iat e class o n th e h igh de se rt. Ro o kst o o l, w ho re ce nt ly ma de t he switch from Yamaha to Suzuki, won the 250cc and Before T he Hill Intermediate classes, bot h with I-I swee ps. Nea r ly 20 0 r iders fr o m t hro ugh o ut t he Northwest we re on hand, alt hough few were as suc c es sf ul as Roo ks too l. The fo rm er minicycle speedster fro m Klamath Falls first hammered th e co mpe t it ion in the co mbine d Bef o re Th e Hill Juni or/ Int e rm e d iat e c las s; Rookstool grabbed the leads in both motos and ne ve r loo ke d bac k. There we re three othe r Intermed iate riders amid the field of 16 ride rs: Just in Je nse n and O ve r 25 riders Jason Parks and Steve Miller. None of them , though, posed S a se rious th reat to Rookstool, who easily won both mot os. Miller and Parks tra de d moto wins in the Ov er 25 class, w ith Washingto n's Miller nett ing th e overall win aft e r a m ota -t w o victory. In th e hotly contested Before Th e HillJunior class, Kawasaki-mounted Wes Baughmann won both mot os. Brad Batche lor, riding a Yama ha YZ450 F and Kevin Petrushkin split runner -up , lau rel s, w it h Batchelor (2- 3) ga rne ring th at position overall. Pet rushkin (4-2), Justin Ki ett v (3-4) a nd so ut he r n O r e go n ri der Tanne r Mitc hell (5-6) fil led o ut the to p five . Baug hma nn also pos t ed a vict o ry in the I25cc Junior class, besting Petrushkin and Arlie Southard. Rookstool also do minated the competition in the combined 25 0cc Junio r/ Int e rme d iate cont es t. Loc al Yamaha rider Brandon Kentne r was Rook stool's close st compe t it ion in moto two, but Kent ne r co uldn' t dup licat e his wi n earlier in the series and cou ld only watch fro m a distance as Rookstool ruled . Former AMA Pro Nev laBorde also showed flashes of br illiance , pl acing seco nd t o Roo kstool in t he ope nin g mo to . laBorde , wh o in his late 305 is a to p AA-ranked off-ro ad rider, we nt 2-3 fo r third overall, ahe ad of Je nsen. Eugene . Oregon 's Batch elo r was the to p perfo r me r in t he Jun ior cla ss, w inning both m o tos . KT M ride r Le e Slat e r (2- 2) plac ed se co nd overall, t railed by local ride rs Matt Eme ry and Brandon Pittman, and Erik Bende r rou nded ou t th e top five . D lrninunv e speedsters Brayden Massey and Brad Frace e ach copped a pair of do uble-class overall wins . The Polini-mounted Massey massacred t he co mpetition in the SOcc (7-B) and SO Ope n cc classes . W ith 21 riders, the 50cc Age Grou p class was unusu ally large , wh ich made (or an inte resting first -t urn melee. Massey made the trek from Ce ntral Point, O rego n, to score a I- I win in the 50cc (7-8) class, topping usual front run ners Wyatt Fowler and A1yas Ward ius. In the adjoined 50cc (0- 6) class, it was a Husky o net wo punch, w ith Tre vo r Newma n and Jac k Fowl er leading t he wa y. Washingt on's Peter Lenz (3-3) ne tted third ove rall. Frace 's wins came in th e 65cc (9-1 I) and 6Scc Open classe s. T he O rego nian's most impressive victory was his seco nd of the day, in the 65cc Open class , lead ing Washington ians Kyle Ulrich and Tatyn Taylor into the to p three the same o rd er as in his e arlie r 6Scc (9- 1I) win.
