And so it w as at Mes quite Moto -X Park o n Feb ruary 14 . when t he ascc Intermed iates lined up to do batt le at th e USRA opener. Clay Cut le r roar e d o ff t he line t o le ad Ale x Matteson and Cameron Ol sen wh en race one fired up. O lsen gra bbe d second over the big canyo n ju m p. but Matt eson snagged it r ight back. Th e three fro nt-runne rs we re nose to tail for the rest of the race . On the w hue- flag lap, O lsen sliced underneath Matteson in t he b ig horsesho e sw eepe r, o nly t o c r ash spectac ular ly over the canyon jump. Cutle r claimed t he win, w ith Matteson and Dacoda Sorochu k follOW ing. Race tw o saw Matteson pop the holeshot , but Cutler q ulckly made a pass fo r the lead and the n just as quickly bobbled back to third. W ith Matteson now in the le ad . In Open Pro act io n , Sco tt T heob a ld charged o ut in fro nt of Kipp Posey and Just in Jenson to grab the early le ad. Posey made his move unde rneath Theobald in the hairpin tum to take over the point. Meanwh ile, Ty Morrow was w ork ing his way thr o ugh the pack. Posey romped to the first-half win, wh ile Mor row finalty sec ured second on the white-nag lap. Pose y jum pe d out ahead of T heobald and Jenson as the seco nd half cranked up. Morrow was once again coming on strong. He fought his way into sec ond by midrace. but no o ne was catc hing Posey. who was long gone for win num be r tw o and t he ove rall O pe n Pro title . Brinks took off like a shot to take the lead on his new YZ4S0F DTX bike . Zach Kinzler was hot o n Brinks' heels, challenging him for the lead , but Kinzler couldn't make it happen. Brinks placed first , and Kinzler crossed the finish line in secon d place. Robert Lawrence from Lo ngmo nt. Colorado, sped his way to th ird place, just ahea d of Todd Lightcap. L.N . Waggener struggled and had to wa tch the others from fifth place. (Right) Za ch Ahleen won the 8 5cc (12·15) Junior class at the USRA opener at Mesquite Moto-X Park. PfW SHAFT: I. He got off to a goo d start , but his bike w o uld not st ic k on t he bottom line of the tra ck, and he was unable to maintain the lead. Robe rt Lawre nce hit the gas, passing Ruiz on the second lap. Lawrence sped on to place first , unchallenged. Ruiz tried to hold the seco nd -place spot fo r several laps, but Roger Humphrey soared past him on the fifth lap to claim second place . Ruiz finished t hird. Chuck Beving, who sho uld have been a threat in this class, got tangled up at the start and had to pull out of the race. c.J. Beving was the man to beat in the O pe n Pro class. On his CRF4S0R DTX bike. c.J. too k the holeshot and roared around t he track to win the first- prize mon ey totally uncontested. During practice .
