Hahn and Nafzger we nt at it again in the 2S0cc Pro final. Th is time, Nafzger would not be den ied , and he sa iled to victo ry. Mar k Sch m idt, on the Motospo rts Fact o ry fourstroke Yamaha, held off th e late charge fro m KTM-mounted Chris Foskett to maintain third. It was a wide -open skirmish in t he Open Amate ur final. Zac k Martin , Schwarzenbacher, Bryan Austin and jo hn Cooper we re up front, trying to dominat e. Martin finallybro ke free and t o ok the lead . Schwarzenbacher and Austin contested second , as Coo per w e nt down. Martin bree zed t o vict ory, a nd Schwarzen bacher took second. Hond a ride r john Ste wart split Hahn and Nafzger to move into second in the Open Pro final. Hahn split th e scene and rode to victory, and Ste wart he ld off Nafzg er and claimed a well-earned second. Stone went down hard , wh ile Ripple got slightly out of shape but so me how managed to recov e r and take the lead. Stone's troubles didn't end there : Suzuki ride r Roy Ho rt on also landed on him, nearty taking both riders out of the race . Stone and Horton both re mounted ; Stone finished 12th, and Horton finished ISth. Meanwhile, o ut front, Bogard wa s on t he cha rge , with Ripple in his sights . O n lap six, Boga rd fo und w hat he w as look ing (or a nd passed Ripple for the lead. Bogard put his head down a nd pulle d aw ay fo r th e win. Ripple finished seco nd, with Hond a ride r Travis Merr ill third . "Stone and I got toget her over the trip le," Ripple said , "a nd it's bad th at he had t o go down , but the racing is tight in arenacross and those kinds of things happen . The good thing is tha t everyone wa lked away and are all right. The Dash For Cash also looked like it would be a battle between Bogard and Ripple. The re wou ld be a big po t of gol d for th e w inne r. Bogard went to the front fast and stayed there for t he win , lea ving Ripple second and Tim Ho llenbeck third . "This is just gre at !" Bogard said. " I am so glad to be here. Most of all, I wou ld like to say, 'Thank you. Springfield!'" St o ne returned to the line for the 250cc m a in , a nd everyo ne wo ndered if he had It recovered from the incident in the 125cc main. At the drop of the gate , Ripple led the way. By the end of the first lap, Bogard had moved to second and Stone to fourt h. Stone wo rked his way into third by th e end of lap three, but by then both Ripple and Bogard were already out of tou ch. Bogard charged hard , but the time it had take n him to get into sec on d gave Ripple just too much room to work with. Whe n t hey encountered lappe rs, it loo ked like Bogard was ready to make a move, but just as soo n as he wo uld close t he gap, Ripple wou ld reo pen it . Tho ugh Bogard had tried everything he could to sweep all the wee ke nd 's main eve nts, Ripple crossed t he finish line first in this one . Bogard was seco nd, and Sto ne was third. RESULTS 50: I. Saturday Night Under The Lights Race 4 : Sunset Tavern & Marina Schwarzenbacher The Terminatorl By DAN SCHMITT LAKE KOSHKONONG, WI, FEB. 7 T he fourth nighttime short-track ice race at the Sunset Tavern kicked 0 (( on schedule at 5:30 p.m. Some of the racers w ho had competed during the day at Oshkosh decided not to ma ke the B5-mile dr ive do wn to Lake Kosh kon ong, so the field of com pet ito rs was smalle r than usual. The weath er was fine, with temperatu re s in the te en s and no not iceable wind. First up was t he O ver 50 final. jim Baker too k his modern 450cc Hond a into the lead , with Mike Dugan, on the older SOOcc Honda , in 58 seco nd . Dugan t rie d t he insid e line and the outside line but could not get by Baker. In t he O ve r 40 ra c e , Fr eepo rt Hond a! Kawasaki team mates Roy Nafzger, on a Honda, and Terry Hahn, on a Kawasaki, went at it for the enti re 10 laps. Hahn took the victory with Nafzger second. Eric joh nson too k third on his 500cc Y aha. am Serge Figliuzzi had his Yamaha in the lead at th e start o f the 2S0c c Am at e ur final , but it didn't take long for Brock Schwarzenbacher to move to the front . With the flash of the green, Schwarzenbacher took th e early le ad . w it h Aust in on his rear whe el. Saturday morning's temperatures were in th e 40s, but the sun and wind helped dry the tra ck. Mandeville's D.j. Cortez had an eventful day. Two of the top riders in the 85cc Op e n class, Mitch Go urn e y an d Michae l Wa gner, were trying to get away from the pack o n the first lap of the first mete when they bot h went down and wou nd up pinned unde r t heir bikes in the "Wild Weste rn" co rner of t he t rack. Wh e n Cortez came by, he t hrew down his bike and rushed over to he lp, pulli ng the bikes off them. Meanwhile, Skylar Phillips inhe rite d th e lead, followed by Tyle r Ball, St e ve n Williams and Zac h Tullier. Wagne r got bac k into t he ra ce seve ra l sec o nd s bef o re Gou rn e y, an d t hey cha rge d from ninth and 10th, re spective ly. In less th an one lap, Wagner had moved into sixth, a nd Gourney jumped the lo ng t r ip le into sevent h . O n the last lap , Gou r ney pass e d Wagne r to t a ke ov er Sixth , and t hey both continued to move up throug h t he pack. Whe n Phillips washed out in the infield sweeper, Ball rode his Kawasaki across the finish line. Phill ips ru shed to re mou nt, as the Gcurney-wagner fre ight train was clo sing in. All t hree ride rs disappeared beh ind the jump at the last turn; when t hey reapp eared at the checkere d nag, the or der was Phillips, Gourney and Wagner in second through fourth. In the second moto, Gourney too k the ear ly le ad , follo w ed by Ball a nd Wagner. Phillips moved into fourth, clearing the trip le, but we nt down a few turns later. Ball washed out at the hairpin, leaving leaders Gourn ey and Wagner in a run to the finish line . Gourn ey got the overall, with Phillips taking second and Wagner third. Tyler Hancock got his Champion Cycle KTM out front in the 125cc Open, closely pursued by Ho nda rider Daniel Crayton. Beh ind them were Chris Kennedy and Ch ase Melanco n. Crayt on moved up to pass Hancock at t he big tripl e; right beh ind them , Melancon did the same thing to Kenne dy. Ne ither att em pt was successful. Crayton finally got th e lead in the we st e rn corner, but Hancock cam e right back at th e F 40th Anniver s ary ta blet op and slipped inside t he hai r pin just enough to bloc k the line and re ta ke the lead, raising th e tension. Crayton mad e a pass the ha rd way, go ing around the outside o f the sweepe r, and had to jump a rut , but he made it work a nd regained the lead for good. These tw o top riders repeated t heir finishes in th e se co nd moto, wit h Dustin Sampey nipping at their heels in third. Denham Springs' Larry Hayes had a big day on his Ho nda. He swept all four motos in the 250cc O pe n and Op e n Intermed iate classes. Bot h Mon e y classes were no con te st.
