California Gold Cup Motocross Se ri es Round 4 : Glen Helen Raceway Park Nihan Nabs Gold Cup Win BY GREG ROBERTSON SAN BERNARDINO, CA, FEB. 15 T he starting gate on the National Track at Gle n He len Raceway Park was near capacity , as 37 125cc Interm ed iates were set to do battle during rou nd fo ur of the sixth ann ual FMF/Scott/EVS-spo nso red California Gold Cup Motocross Series . After a pair of motos in the ultrac o mpetitive class, Chris Nihan emerged victorious after sp litting mota wins wit h Jake Weimer. In mete one, CRF2S0-m ou nte d Nihan led the huge field down the long start straight and into tum one. Robert Memo li got a good jump ou t of the gate to hold down second off the start, ahead of Weim er, Sean Bor ken hagen , Kevin Frisbie and Mark Brewer. We ime r had his RM12S arou nd both Memoli and Nihan on the ope ning lap, while Jared Minor came from abou t 10t h to hold do w n fo urt h. Niha n shadowed Weime r for a coup le of laps before Weimer was able to put a few seconds on the long string of fo ur-stro kes running behind . and he took the win. Nihan finished second w ith five seconds to spare over Memoli, who was an eq ual distance ahea d of Minor. Nihan got off to another exce llent start in mote two, ahead of Minor, De rr eck Murphy, Curtis Malins and Steven Cisar. Nihan appeared to have the rutted-up tra ck wired, as he put a second per lap o n Minor to sew up the overall on a 2- 1 showing. Murp hy was glued t o Minor 's back fender fo r the entire race for a well-deserved third and fift h overall, behind Mem oli (3-4 ) and Cisar (S-6) . Weimer had some pro blems and could o nly manage a 24thplace finish, w hich kep t him ou t of the to p 10 overall. Josh Grant scored so me decisive wins in both the 12Scc and 2SDcc Pro classes . Gra nt made his way to the front of the pack early in each of his four motes and was never challenged . Micky Gr iffin collected secondplace payback in both fields with four straight runner-up rides. Carlos Gonza lez ro unded out the top three in both classes . Kawasak i-mounted Nick Pa lu z z i w a s flaw less in both t he 6Scc O pen and OScc (T hro ugh 1 I ) events. Paluzzi got to the chec ke rs first, wit h substantial leads, in all four mo t o s . Aar o n Sim ino e finish e d second to Paluzzi in both Open co nte sts , ahea d of Austin Politelli and James Frigo. Dakota Garner turned good starts int o 2 ~ 2 show ings in the 85cc (Through I I) field, followed by Bryce Stewart (3-3) and Steven Tokars ki (4-4). Two divisio ns of 125cc Novices were requ ired , with the to p 10 of each being invited back for a runoff to see who would go home with some factor y co nt ingen cy m o ne y. Chad Go res ended up w ith a perfec t I- I score in Division O ne after fe ndi ng off bot h Kurt is Kae lin a nd D a na Dreier. Mat t Vande rw at e r (2· 1) earned t he Division Two overall hon ors, topping Bo bby Langin (3-2) and Andy Taylor (4-3). Travis Freistat led the first few lap s of t he ru no ff before Kaeli n took control. Smulders , on the Rob's Performance Honda, ran a good line to ta ke the 12Scc-c1ass win . Nick Smith, on another Honda, got by Suzukimounted Cody Relfsnider fo r second . Na fzger again took the lead in the Senior class . Je r r y " Mr. Ice " Westh ouse, o n t he Schaumburg Honda, and FRP Kawasaki jockey Jeff Frede tte battled over second for the entire 10 laps: Fredette got the nod . Benny Carlson put his HMC Superbike KTM in the early lead in the Open Pro race. On his 4&6 Racing 2S0cc Honda , Jesse Janisch wasted no time taking awa y that lead on the seco nd lap, finding his own line and running away with the vict o r y. Illino is Har ley -Davidson's Tim Farrell ran a so lid third , wi th local hero Dan Meschler in fo urth and Frankie Kaiser fifth. With his 450cc Y ama ha bo uncing off the revlimiter, Wollin finally gave way to Nafzger in the Ope n A final. Rosine took advantage o f Westhouse's heavy crash in turn three to grab third. Smulders tried to get by, but Rosine held on for third. Nafzger too k his third victo ry of the day on the FH K Honda. 40th Ann iversary In the Open B final. John Rosine went w ire to wire. Schwanzenbacher ran second on the Young America Honda, with Evan Schno ll third. With $300 going only to the winner of the Dash For Cash , e ight Pros blasted off the line for this 10-lap shoo t-o ut. Carlson had his KTM in the lead , but again Janisch took the outside line. Neve r looking back, Janisch ran right on the outside, next to the snow bank . The battle on the track was for second, as Carlso n and Brad swapped places for six laps.
