hunder Ridge MX, former ly known as Tunnel Hill MX, hosted rou nd eight of t he Nort h Georgia MX Winter Seri es .
Located just off 1
-75, exit 34 1, in nort h Georgia, Thunde r Ridge
has been co mplete ly redesigned by Glenn Bates and Mark Barnett. The track offers riders of all ages a safe yet challenging race
ex pe rience. Track owne r Darryl Lynn w elcomed riders fro m
across the Southeast on a cold, windy Dece mber morning, and a
fullday of hot 'n' heavy racing began.
With cold tem pera tures and lower- than-usual attendance, the
250cc A, B and C classe s ran toge t he r while being sco red
separately. Wit h t he race off to a crowd-pleasing start, KTM 's
De nny Gant cr ashed hard just afte r the huge finish-line jump.
Rivalry gave way to camaraderie when co mpeti tor Chad Brown
sto pped to make sure his fellow race r was okay. D.C. Thomas on
kept his KTM wide open, while Brown res umed racing a couple
of laps later. Gant (in the 2S0cc B class), Brown (in the 2S0cc C
class) and Thomason (in the 2s 0cc A class) each finished w ith
firs t-place poin ts, as t hey w e re t he so le co nten de rs in their
res pective classes.
The 85s ran four combined classes in both motos . Knoxville ,
Te nnessee's Tyle r Nutter earned bragging rights for the 85cc
(7- 11) class with I- I finishes. As the sole contender in the 8s cc
( 12- 1S) class, Nick Phipps hammered his Honda hom e for firstplace honors for his class. Another sole conte nder, Chad Whidby
of Chattanooga, Tennessee , e nded the day as champ ion of the
8Scc Ope n class. Beginne r rider Eric Sandoval of Chatsworth,
Georg ia, scored two first-place wins for the overall. With 3-2
finishes, Yamah pilot Brandon Cain claimed second overall, and
a
KTM rider c.J. Virgona tallied third overall with his 2-3 finishes .
The 65cc Beginne r class introduce d fo ur up-a nd-comi ng
stars. Suzuki-mounted C.J. Phipps was out front in the first tum
in mot o one, and he held that lead throughout the first lap, with
Flintstone, Georgia's Westley Currie in seco nd, Jacob Thacker in
th ird, and Chris Shell in fourt h. Just after the beginning of the
second lap, C.J. Phipps we nt do wn , losing his lead to Currie ,
while Thacker too k the op portunity to move into second. C.J.
Phipps was unable to restart his bike until the last lap, so when
the checkered flag waved . Curr ie too k first, and Thacker was
second, followed by Shell in third , while the early leade r placed
fou rth .
Moto two started with c.J. Phipps in the lead, foilowed by
C urrie, Shell and Thacke r. Th e Suzuki-m ou nted c.J . Phipps
q u ic kly to o k co ntrol a nd he ld o n t o a comfortable le ad
t hroughout the race, co nfiden tly taking t he checker ed flag for
the victory. Currie plac ed t hird , Shell held o n to thi rd , and
Thacker was fourt h.
Overall, Currie was first , C]. Phipps was runner-u p, and Shell
placed th ird.
