SRMA Winter Se ries Round ,: Down South MX Track Dubroc Locks It Up By Roy JENKINS NEW IBERIA LA, JAN. 10-11 , he seventh ann ual SRMA Wint er Series began with a bang at the opening rou nd in New Ibe ria. Although it ra ined th ro ughout T hursd ay, on Friday night the fron t moved through , t he campe rs pulled in, and tra ck ow ne r Ch ippy Giselar chopped up the dark Louisian a dirt. On Satu rday morning, a co ld wind and bright sun gr eeted th e 50c c and Be ginne r cla sses . T he big. bike Novice and Money classes raced on Sunday. The track held up well, and by aftern oon it had become very ro ugh, with deep ruts across many turns and braking bumps that challenged even the hardiest riders. Sunday's 12Scc Novice class was the biggest cl ass , a nd it had t o be broken down int o q ual ifie r s. Chad Dubroc took his KTM to victo ry in the main event, followed by lo cal riders Broussard and Tee Hebert. Dubroc, from Youngsville , Louisiana, sw ept the 12Scc and Schoolboy classes by using good starts, qu ick po we r delivery, and a bike-slingin', tail-whipp in' jumping style, w hich drew so me compariso ns to a young Kevin Windham. Pra irieville's Mitch Go urney wo n the first mota of the talent-laden 8Scc ( 12.1 S) class. All e yes w e r e o n Jerem y Dom ing ue , a s the Lafayett e rider stormed from last to fifth. In the second mota, Moss Point , Mississippi , f1yboy Co lt McCarra sailed int o se c o nd , beh ind Goumey, followed by Wagner, Domingue and Cortez. Wagner seemed to have second nailed down again, but Domingue was on the move from m id pack . Wagner w e nt dow n , wh ile Dom ingue moved into fourth. By the time the leaders reappeared on the last lap, Dom ingue had moved into second, behind Gcumey's fivesecond lead. Sudden ly Domingue went do wn in the finish-llne S curve , allowing McCarra and Wagner to slip by and finish behind Goumey at the checkered flag. The best race of all was the last mota of the week end, wh ich some lingered to watch wh ile those pac king up in the pits listened over the PA. It was a "battle ro yal" between Go urney T Mighty Mini pilot Alan Sparks of Ringgold, Georgia, topped the SOcc (4- 6) class at round eight of the No rth Georgia MX Winter Se ries. CWIRA Ice Races Race 2: Jellystone Park No Boo-Boos for Walbuesser at Jellystone By DAN SCHMln FREMONT, WI, JAN. 11 T he second points-paying race of the CentraJ Wisconsin Ice Racing Association was held at the Jellystone Park facility in Fremont. Wis · ccnsln. With no wind and with temperatures in the mid-20s, a huge number of competitors and spectators came out to play. On this large ice track, Don Walbuesser let everyone know that his di rt -track-framed Yamaha was going to be competitive. He won the Open Pro and Vet Pro heat . In the Vet Pro final , Chris Daniels got a super holeshot to lead the first go-around . but co ming out of tum four, Scott Winkler moved through to take the lead, with Cliff Eckes right behind. At midway, Walbuesser put the hammer down and m oved by Eckes and W inkle r t o take the lead . W inkle r tried t he outside line , but Walbuesser's 600c( Yamaha four-stro ke had the drive to take the w in. The "Moo se Man," John Strangleld, led the first tw o la ps of the Open Pro final before Walbuesser powered by on the 600cc Y amaha. Winkler, on the big-bore Kawasaki, held oflthe charges of Mark Muth , on the 600 cc Har leyDavidson Rotax, to hang on to third . Robin Williams grabbed the holeshot in the C fina l, but Be r ry Pric har d and Dave Mills moved by o n the outs ide, setting up their twoman duel to the finish. Coming out of the last comer, Prichard stayed low and bea t Mills by an inch to take the victory. The 2SOcc B final was a breakaway for Steve Stewart and Seb Boge; the latt er took the lead on the third lap and hung on to take the victory. Young Adam Bushman took th ird on his 12Scc Honda. Tom Wottreng came off the line first and ran up front in t he Open B final, w hile his Cycle 42 Craft te ammate Keith Spen ner ra n second on another 600 cc Yamaha. Boge, on the big fourstro ke Husky, moved up to chaJlenge Spenner, he ld the inside line o ut of the last co me r, and nipped Spenner for second. Jam ie Hanso n he ld the up per hand in th e 200cc B final on his 200cc Kawasaki, holding off charges from Bushm an on the 125cc Yamaha. Bushman took the w in on his 85cc Yamaha, over Brandon Duellman , in the Junior Bike clas s. Michell Leu and Sabrina Wottreng ran third and fourth . When Scott Bushma n joined the action up front in the 2SOcc Pro final, Eckes dec ided to ma ke a br ea k, lea ving Pat Bean to ho ld off Scott . At the checkers, Eckes took the victory. Bean took second, over Scott . Joel Bayer! had his hands full in t he Vet B final. Bot h Mike Vogel and Stewa rt tried the outside line to get by Baye rl, but on the lap that cou nte d , Bayer! got to the flag first. Vogel settled for second, with Stewart third . Strangfeld ha d his b ig-bore Kawa sa ki wo rking it the Open GP final, stretching out his lead ove r second-placed Mall Glodoski . A tight battle developed for th ird on this seven -eighths . mile TT co urse . Bayerl t urned tighter and accelerated harder to take third , over Dave Wappler and Roger Lundsten. and Domingue in the Mini Open 80cc class. Dom ingue had won the first mota , but Goumey got the holeshot in the second stanza an d t ried to chec k o ut. However, Domingue wouldn't let him get away, shado wing Goumey all th rough th e race. On the last lap, the duo disap pe ared into the bac k section; w he n th ey reappeared, Do mingue made his inside mo ve with o nly four turns to go. At the big double , Domingue appeared to stretch his lead, but Gourney sneaked into position at the entrance of the S curve. So mehow, Gourney fo und a "magi c line " through t he deep ruts and launched his Kawasaki onto the finish-line triple to w in the race. A game Do mingue got t he ove rall victo ry in th is class wit h a 1·2 finish , over Gou rney 's 4- 1 sco re .
