In the area to visit his fiancee, the Riverside resident decided to take in the local race and found a couple of riders· namely, Billy Jurevich and Vince Blair - quite a challenge. Although both riders had a big advantage hav· ing raced the track nearly every previous round, Buckelew went out in the first moto and snared a second·place start, behind DH Cycles-backed Cory McDaniel, and quickly took over the lead. McDaniel, who just recently made his Pro debut, hung with Buckelew for most of the moto and came up a close sec· ond, with Jurevich right behind him. In moto two, Jurevich, who has arguably been the fastest Pro thus far in the series, grabbed the ho!eshot and kept Buckelew in check for the win, and his 3·1 effort was good enough for second overall. McDaniel carded a 2-3 to round out the top three overall. In 125cc Pro action, the evening belonged to Powerhouse/Acerbis/MXH/Big Gun·backed Vince Blair. The Lodi resident put in two of his personal·best motos of the series and walked away with the overall, following a Aawless 1-1 performance. Blair took on an I1-rider field and led all but one lap of both motos. McDaniel, Robert Harold and Buckelew fought over the second spot all moto long, and McDaniel held off the pressure, with Harold, Buckelew and Adam Miller rounding out the top five in the first moto. As Blair led the field in moto two, Buck· elew was hot in pursuit, but he just couldn't find a passing spot, as Blair chose all the right lines. Buckelew settled for the runner-up spot with his 4-2 effort, and Harold (3-4) rounded out the top three overall. At the other end of the spectrum, four divi· sions of Pee Wee racing also kept the crowd entertained. James Carothers took home the honors in the Pee Wee Junior class after posting a 2-1 score, over Michael Silva's 1·2 efforts. In the 50cc (4-6) class, Polini pilot Derick Silva topped an II·rider field with a solid 1·1 score. besting Clayton Tucker's 4·2 tally. R.J. Mendez had a stellar night. taking the overall in the 50cc (7·8) class with a 3-1 moto score, while Cal Johnson (2·2) snagged the runner-up spot. Series dominator Mark Braden had an off night, as a second-moto crash netted him an uncharacteristic third overall via a 1-5 score. Johnson (2-1) and Braden (1·3) topped the 50cc Open class, with KTM rider Mendez (3-2) rounding out the top three. Club Moto: Preston "Yak Attack" Mull pulled a double, winning the 80cc Intermediate and 80cc (8-11) classes at round five of the I Moto Friday Night Series in Livermore, California. 80 NOV: I. JULY 26 Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Justin Buckelew made his return to racing in the tight confines of supercross racing at round five of the AMP Top Gun Summer·X Series. After rebounding from a serious knee injury that had him side· lined for some time, Buckelew headed north and battled with several of Nor Cal·s finest and, after shaking off a little rust, topped the 250cc Pro class with a 1-2 score on the evening. 70 AUGUST 27,2003' eye I e n e _ s 250 PRO: I. The track crew had their hands full keeping the moisture in the track. but frequent grooming kept it well in hand. As the sun went down, the racing kept the heat up. The 65cc (7-9) event was one to watch. Kawasaki pilot Justin Parmer used consistent finishes to rule this class on this night. Suzuki jockey Kenton Braswell from North Carolina won the first moto but slipped down the order in the second event. Morgan Stewart, another Suzuki ace, kept his yellow racer in the last podium position. The 65cc (10·11) contest was won by Suzuki rider Dylan Taylor with a second-moto win. Dillon McGullian kept his Kawasaki on the pipe for a strong second. Tanner McCullers, another Kawasaki man, kept the last podium spot clean and green. In the aocc Beginner duel. Andrew Carter, on his Kawasaki, won both motos with no problem. Another Kawasaki jockey, Scott Novak, eamed second place, ahead of hard· charging Suzuki man Wesley Delong after a great duel. The 85cc (7·11) contest saw Taylor Smith of RHS Racing finish ahead of Suzuki rider Austin McCullers. Kawasaki jockey Ryan Jones was a strong third with a textbooksmooth ride. Mike Henderson and his son Clayton did the deal this evening, winning four classes between them. Clayton. on the Freewheeling/LSD Racing Honda, took the win in both of the Youth-class motos. Austin Drummond of Atlanta Auto Brokers wound up second overall after some challenging starts, Robby Winiarczyk, another Honda rider, kept his head down for a solid third-place finish. Clayton also won the 125cc C class, overcoming some slow starts. Honda rider Bobby Scogin was second overall. One of the best rides of the evening was that of Chris Castle, who won the last moto with a great performance and took third overall. When the gate dropped for the Over 30 contest, Mike Henderson, on his CRF450R. was gone! Honda rider Russ Castle took second overall with two good motos. Mark Riehl was the third-place man, making for an all-red podium. The rest of the Over 35 class watched Mike go away again. Another Honda man, Stanley Dowda, placed second, ahead of Bryan Traylor, also Honda-mounted. It seemed the age-class riders preferred red this weekend. The 125cc A class alone was worth the price of admission. Josh Whitmire made an appearance after an injury-induced vacation. Whitmire took the win in both motos. KTM rider D.C. Thomason earned second place overall the hard way - with poor starts. Dalas Conner dusted off his YZ for a strong third after besting Thomason in the first moto. The racing was good, as usual, and the Calhoun crew stayed on top of the track surface to keep it prime. All got what they have grown to expect: a great event and a lot of fun. Results 50 SHAFT: I.
