AMP Super Summer Series Round 4: Oatfield Raceway Frassetto Freezes 'em Way-Fast Wiegand! Out in Chilton Bv JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS Bv PETE EMME CHILTON, WI, JULY 26 More than 300 riders were on hand to contest the big and bad Amateur Stadiumcross Championships at Gravity Park, where riders were treated to special event trophies that measured over 6 feet tall. Scolly Biese and his crew had to deal with Mother Nature, who checked in with some showers early on, making the supercross-style track a slick one. After some early matos, Gravity Park's crew waited out the rain and then reworked the track and added some fresh, dry dirt to its surface, ensuring the best possible conditions. It was one of the best tracks the Northern Cup has seen in its three-year existence. If that wasn't enough, fans and racers were treated to a freestyle show by none other than Tommy Clowers and Jeff Tilton, with the help of Red Bull. The racing was awesome, as usual, and the points battles for Northern Cup Motocross Series heated up at round eight. Adam Hickman took a nice holeshot in the first Sportsmen B mota but was quickly run down by series points contender Jeremi Smith. who drove hard through the uphill whoops to make the pass on Hickman. Though Hickman dashed back to the inside, he couldn't make it stick. Series points leader Michael Groleau had a tough time on the start and was near the back of the pack, looking for any opportunity to make a move. Jacob Collins replaced Hickman in second as he sliced to the inside of the bowl turn and made the pass. Hickman then slid out on the third lap over the finish-line jump and never regained position. Smith looked strong on the slippery track and checked out to the big win, gaining some points on the leader in the points race. Collins finished a strong second, while Chad Herman worked his way into third. Smith was all business in the second moto. and he wrapped up the overall with back-toback wins. Kevin Vandenbush had his Yamaha hooked up for a second-place finish and fifth overall with an 8-2 tally. Jacob Collins took third and second overall with 2-3 scores. Series points leader Groleau will be happy to get back to the sand at the next round, as he finished 7 -6 for sixth overall. The track was starting to dry out nicely as Wade Gilbert grabbed the first-moto holeshot in the Mini 65cc class. He was closely followed by Ben Peterson, Scott McConnell and 20 other 7- to 11-year~0Ids. Peterson took over the lead right before the whoop section, but McConnell had the lead on his mind, and he took it through the whoops on his KTM. Travis Frassetto followed McConnell as they exited the whoops, but Peterson got second back from Frassetto over the infield double. Peterson hit the ground after washing out on the downside of the new double section, letting Frassetto get back into the mix. Peterson remounted in seventh. Gilbert moved into third after Peterson's mishap, Frassetto made his move into the point in the stepdown section before the whoops for the lead, followed by McConnell, Gilbert and Brian Ludwig. Peterson charged back up to fourth by the end of the third lap, in front of Ludwig. Then it was Frassello's turn to fall, handing the lead back to McConnell going into the final lap. Frassetto had a lot of ground to make up and lots of traffic to contend with to catch the leader, McConnell, and he ran out of time. McConnell took the big win, over Frassetto, while Gilbert finished in third. Peterson stayed in fourth, and LudWig rode well enough for fifth in the talentladen class. Frassetto came back strong in the second moto, making no mistakes and taking the moto win and the overall via 2-1 tallies. McConnell did the opposite: His 1-2 punch earned second overall. Peterson went 4-3 for third, and NCS points leader Gilbert (3-4) scored fourth. Frassetto also won the Mini Junior class with back-to-back wins on his Kawasaki. Henry Isabelle worked his way through the pack to get second in each moto. Ben Peterson rode to consistent 3-3 scores for third overall. These two Mini classes are getting faster and faster each week in the NCS, with the top five or six riders dicing it out for the lead. Iron man Alan Jonas cashed in on the day's events by winning all four motos in the Masters Over 25 and Vet A Over 30 divisions. It wasn't all that easy for the series points leader in both· c;fasses, as he had to fight his way to the front by beating out Flea Cisler in the Masters class and Tom Nielsen in the Vet A division. Jonas also took second overall in the 250cc A class with a 3-2 tally, behind winner Eric Weise. TURLOCK. CA, JULY 27 Beau Wiegand, piloting a quick San Jose Yamaha/Thor/TCR/Posey Racing-backed YZ125, set a blistering pace in the Schoolboy class at round four of the AMP Super Summer Series, presented by Swift Dodge Sacramento and Merced Powersports. The effort, in the midst of a triple-digit hot day. earned him the overall win among a fast, 15-rider field at the Oatfield Raceway. Wiegand found many familiar faces on the gate as, not too long ago, many of the same guys were battling it out in the BOcc and Supermini classes. And, as expected, they were also going fast on the 125s! Moto one saw Wiegand, Kramer Patterson and Justin Posey leading the way early on, as Garret Henderson and Kyle Kent made up the rest of the top five. Patterson kept Wiegand in sight. while behind him, Henderson was making up ground in a hurry. Kent was on the same pace until he went down on the second lap. Henderson then made his way by Posey and set his sights on Patterson and Wiegand. On the white-flag lap, Wiegand had a fairly comfortable lead, while Patterson struggled to hold off Henderson. At the checkers, it was Wiegand with the win, and Henderson made a last-tum pass for the second spot. Patterson\ Posey and Curtis Roe rounded out the top five_ In moto two. Wiegand again led the pack into the first tum, as Kent, Tim Di Giordano, Roe and Henderson trailed. This time out, though, Kent was on a mission, and he quickly latched on to Wiegand's rear fender, These two riders have had plenty of battles throughout the years in the mini ranks, so it was a familiar sight; they were just on bigger bikes, The race for the lead turned into a game of cat-and-mouse, as Wiegand was faster in certain sections, but Kent would promptly reel him right back in. The two put a gap on the rest of the field, and in the end Wiegand held off the pressure for a well-deserved 1-1 score on the day. Henderson, who finished up fourth. took the runner-up spot on the day with a 2-4 effort. Kent (6-2), Roe (5-3) and Patterson (3-5) rounded out the top five. Roe recorded a much better result in the 125cc Novice class, as the Hollister resident went 1·1 on the day. Roe was untouchable as he led every lap of both motos en route to the victory over Wiegand, who mustered up a 2-3 score on the day for second overall. In fact. in the second moto, Wiegand got stuck in the gate, and he entered the first turn dead last among the I g-rider field. With Roe out of sight, Wiegand put his head down and put in an amazing ride to eventually take the third spot. Third on the day went to Johnny Kerslake, who checked in with a sixth in moto one but followed that up with a solid second in mota two. Oakdale's Greg Fouts led the way in the 250cc Novice class with a pair of moto wins over Honda pilot Max Scolari. Fouts put his 250F out front in moto one, while Scolari, Scott Pullin and Brian Elliot fought over the second spot. Scolari ended up with second and promptly returned in moto two with the holeshot. Fouts followed in second for nearly the entire moto and then made a white~f1ag lap pass stick for the victory. Scolari (2-2) and Elliot (4-3) rounded out the top three on the day.
