knocked him over. I shouldn't have done that.
I'm not a dirty rider."
When the last 250cc money moto started,
everyone was watching for payback. But Hobgood ran a clean yet aggressive race. He
made his pass and took Kennedy's line at the
main straight. Kennedy stalked him and made
a few strong attempts but held back from taking any opportunities to knock Hobgood out of

the turns. The outcome was always in doubt,
which made for some entertaining racing.

What do you get if you mix three Bostroms, three Haydens and three Goberts with a
shot of Sorensen? A Pit Daddy cocktail and one's being served at Virginia International
Raceway after the main race on Sunday August 31. This unforgettable beauty pageant
has become the Clayton Memorial Foundation's top fund raiser
and the Championship's most talked about event.
Preparations for the second annual Pit Daddy beauty contest are
underway as America's top road racers train for the second most
prestigious trophy in the series. Over $15,000 was raised during
last year's event for the Clayton Memorial Foundation, which provides aid for injured motorcycle racers.
Almost every male AMA road racer you can think of will be a part
of a beauty pageant that will feature two categories: formal wear
and swimwear. Pit Daddy judges will ignore speed and skill, will
pay scant attention to style and grace, and focus oh-se-c1osely on
pecks and butts.
If you can't make it to VIR you can still take part. Thousands of dollars worth of prizes are
being raffled that evening and tickets are available on-line for just $5. You can also send a
dance tip to your favorite rider and your donation will go directly to help the blind.

Fifteen-year-old Yamaha rider Chase
Melancon from Gonzales dominated all his
races except the second 125cc Open moto.
He got an uncharacteristic bad start and had
to work his way through the crowded field to
the front. Unfortunately, he ran out of time and
had to settle for second, behind Kawasaki
jockey Tim Bergeron, who nabbed the
holeshot and led the whole moto.
In the Schoolboy class, Melancon topped
the field. Suzuki rider Chris Cogsdell, the
Alabama State Arenacross Youth champ, took
second, and D.J. Cortez placed third on his
85cc KTM. Cortez made a last-to-first dash in
the 85cc Open event before being crashed out
by a rider from behind right before the finish
line.
Marion Phillips from Waggaman,
Louisiana. has finally made his comeback
stick after 25 years away from the sport. He
got his 450cc Honda to the front on the Senior
C class and kept it there for a motoMtwo victo M
ry. Greg 5org, who won the first moto, was
catching him from behind, but suddenly
Phillips found a line through the whoops and
outpaced Sorg to the. finish. At the checkers,
he showed the younger riders an old-school
·cross-up." Like many older riders, he has
gone from a ·stand-up" riding style (as a
teenager) to a "sit-down" style. When asked
about that change in the victory interview, he
said, "I have more padding now."
Picayune's Ashley Wheat, arguably one of
the top three women racers in the nation, was
on hand to compete, and she won the
Women's class. She is on her way to Loretta's
and the Steel City National in upcoming
weeks.
Overall, the staff of the Southeast Regional
Motocross Association did an excellent job
hosting this event. The track was red dirt that
held the moisture and had several lines for
passing. There was even an inside berm
added to the two turns near the start. The
jumps were high enough to send the riders
halfway to the top seats on both sides of the
track.
Round three will be held at the on LSU'.
campus on the weekend of September 15.
