Missouri Hare Scrambles Series Round 9: Tebbetts Hare Scrambles Leivan Has Scored Four Score! By FRANK ran on Saturday. Several creek sections offered the racers a place to cool off as well as to test their technical skills. Leivan turned laps in just over 31 minutes, resulting in a 24.2-mph average. A grassy and uneven start section shook things up when the AA riders headed for the woods, with Leivan in the lead. It was a rare Sight indeed. as Doug Stone failed to get the holeshot for the first time in his last 13 attempts. However, the Donnells/Stonework's Suspension CR250 jockey was a ciose second until a poor line choice allowed Caleb Wohletz to take over the spot. As Leivan started to stretch out a lead in the fresh-cut section, Wohletz missed a turn and was relegated to the back of the pack. After a lap. Leivan held a lead of 58 seconds over fellow WR450 rider Chris Thiele, who had taken advantage of a confused Stone entering the main checkpoint. During the second lap. in the same piace as Wohletz had the lap before, Thiele missed the trail and gave the spot back to Stone. By the haifway point of the four-lap event. Leivan was two minutes clear of Stone, who was running second and didn't know it. "I stopped for goggles, and I thought I was in fourth,' Stone recounted. "They told me I was second, but I didn't know how I had got- lElVAN TEBBEITS, MO, JULY 27 "Holeshot" and "wire to wire" are not terms often associated with race victories by I O-time Missouri Hare Scrambles Champion Steve Leivan. However, that all changed at round nine of the series, when the SCR/yamaha pilot pulled a rare holeshot and was never challenged throughout the two-hour event. The dominating performance marked his second win in a row, his fourth of the season, and the 80th of his career in Missouri Hare Scrambles Championship competition. "I couldn't have had a better day,' explained the Answer/Race Tech/Dunlop/ Scott/Yamalube-backed Leivan. "My WR450 got some traction on the slippery start and worked great the rest of the way. I've won this particular event 10 times now, so I think I have the place figured out. It's hard to make up for mistakes here, so it's all about finding a rhythm and staying out of trouble.' The Show Me Motorsports club has been promoting MHSC races longer than anyone else, and it made several changes to its 12.5mile course from years past. Most of the first four miles was reserved for the motorcycles only, while the majority of the remainder of the course was shared with the A TVs, which Tebbetts Hare Scrambles: Steve Lelvan (1) scored his 80th career win at round nine of the Missouri Hare Scrambles Series, in Tebbetts. c • n e vv s ten ahead of Caleb or Chris. When I left, I still wasn't positive I was second." While Stone set out in search of the leader, Thiele was on the gas, moving up to second during lap three. By that time, Leivan was 3 1/2 minutes out front, and he stopped in the pits upon receiving the white flag. "I got some goggles and a quick splash of gas," said Leivan. "My pit crew told me I had three minutes. so my main objective was to stay on two wheels and bring it home safe." That's exactly what happened, as the series points leader laid down another fast and consistent lap and cruised to the overall victory. Thiele turned in the fastest lap of the race on his last pass to claim runner-up honors on his J&W Cycies/Yoshimura/Fiy/Motorcycle StufffTsubaki-supported Yamaha four-stroke. "When I finished. I had to ask Mrs. Leivan what place I got," Thiele said. "I never saw Aaron Shaw or Chris Nesbitt after I got lost and figured they were ahead of me. I'm pretty surprised to be second." As it turned out, both of the riders whom Thiele mentioned dropped out of the race early with problems. Stone rounded out the podium in third, 40 seconds behind Thiele. The battle for fourth lasted all the way to the finish line. FMF/Motui/Moose/Hejlek rider Lars Valin had ridden a solid race all day and was joined on the last lap by Wohletz. Coming out of the woods and heading for the finish line, Wohletz grabbed a handful of throttle on his Surdyke Motorsports/Red Bull/Axo/EVS/ Flatland Racing YZ250F in a last-ditch effort that sent him into a butt· first slide alongside Valin. Leaving nothing to chance, Valin never let off the gas on his CR250 and couldn't avoid a confrontation with the snow fence that lined the check lane. While Wohletz got to his feet, Valin had his bike pinned and sucked up foot after foot of fencing while trying to make his way to the RFlD scoring antenna. Ultimately, Valin got there first to claim fourth, with Wohletz in fifth. The exciting finish gave the spectators something to smile about. Youth North Ys. South Speedway Round 2: Maely's Ranch The South Strikes Back! BY RYAN EVANS CORONA, CA, JULY 27 The South got revenge for their defeat by the North at the annual North vs. South Civii War of Speedway, with a 44-28 victory at round two of the first Youth North vs. South event at Maely's Ranch in Corona, California. The same team format that was used in Auburn on July 18 was applied to the second round. There were six riders, divided into three pairs. on each team. Three rounds would be heid, and every pair faced each of the opposing team's pairs once. After three rounds. there were three main events, in which the pairings were determined by the individual riders' points totals. The South team from round one remained intact. but the North team had several differ· ent members. Jay Ricketts was promoted from reserve status, and Mitchell Johnson joined his brother Paul in the lineup. Only five Northern riders made the trip, so Southern California rider Dylan Stark was drafted inlo the team. The meeting began with Youth National Champion T.J. Fowler passing Krystal Cramer for the win. Tim Gomez jumped into the lead at the start of race two and never looked back as he cruised to an easy win, ahead of the North's J.T. Mabry, in the second race. Dale Facchini used a last·lap pass to win race three. After the first round, the South led 11-7. Cramer began round two by trapping from the outside and taking the lead just ahead of teammate Ricky Wells. The Southern duo remained in front the rest of the way to capture the South's first 5-1 of the day. Gomez was out quick for the second straight round and took his second win, ahead of Paul John· son. Stark was unable to make the start of race six, so Fowler was left to take on the home team by himself. Fowler fought through a first-lap battle with Facchini and Dario Gaivin to get his second win of the day. After two rounds, the South had pushed their lead to 23-13. Round three began with another 5- I from the team of Cramer and Wells, with the young lady being the first to the checkered flag. Race eight was the showdown between Fowler and Gomez, the only undefeated riders after two rounds. Gomez took the initial lead, but Fowler passed him as they entered turn three and led the rest of the way to make himself three for three for the day. Jay Ricketts took his first win of the day to conclude the third round. After three rounds. the South held a 34-20 lead. The main-event round began with Facchini and Jason Ramirez romping to a dominant 5- L race win in the C main. In the 8 main, Galvin was first out of the gate, but the action got tight on the back straight. as three riders were shoulder to shoulder. Galvin parked in turn three and was forced to retire. Ricketts emerged with the lead and was chased by Wells. The race-long battle had Ricketts on the inside and Wells on the outside. The inside line proved best, as Ricketts was able to get some breathing room on the last lap and take the win. The final race of the day, the A main, began with Paul Johnson in the lead, followed by Fowler. Gomez went under Fowler on the second lap and went after Paul. On lap three, his efforts paid off, as he went by Paul on the inside. Gomez was first to the checkered flag for the third time on the day. The final tally was 44-28 for the South. In addition to the team competition, there were races featuring the 80cc two·stroke machines that have been integrated into American Youth speedway this year. Several of the team competitors took part, as did two other riders. One rider was Tyler adorn, whose father, Donnie adorn, is importing the machines. Making his debut was Conner Penhall, son of two-time World Champion Bruce Penhali. When the tapes went up in the main, Wells took the lead, with Stark right behind him. Wells maintained his lead, but Stark kept the pressure on him. As much as Wells tried, he couldn't shake the first-year rider. Wells remained cool under fire as he held on for the win, ahead of Stark, who scored an impressive second place. Galvin was third, Penhall finished fourth. and Odom was credited with fifth.
