Victorville Motocross Complex: Shane Lampigmano roosts his way to a 1-1 moto tally in the 85cc Beginner class at round four of the VMC Desert Nights Series in Victorville, California. second-place rider, Williams. Lampigmano cruised past the checkers with a comfortable lead over Williams, Lent, Nelson and Jacob Buelna. In moto two. Lampigmano once again snared the holeshot over the rest of the Begin· ner field. By the end of lap two, Lampigmano had a J O·second lead· but it was all for naught, as the red nag came out, calling for a restart. As the gate fell for moto two for the second time, Buelna nabbed the holeshot. over Adam Zilla, Felix, Michael Suchomel, Lent and Nelson. Lampigmano was mired back in 13th. At the end of lap one, Buelna still had the lead, followed by Zilla; Lampigmano had already shredded his way into third place. Lampigmana quickly passed Zilla and set his sights on first place. As the lead duo approached a large tabletop, Lampigmano jumped past Buelna for the lead. Lampigmano then quickly put a five-second lead on Buelna, who in turn had a five-second lead over the new thirdplaced rider, Lent. However, Lent slowly reeled in Buelna and made the pass for second over another large infield tabletop. By this time, Lampigmano had a 19-second lead over the rest of the field. Lampigmano took the win with a 1-1 tally, followed by Lent (3-2). Buelna took third overall with a 5-3 score, fourth went to Williams (2-8), and Travis Hoover rounded out the top five overall with an 8-6 moto tally. Sandia Motor Speedway Supermoto Debuts at Sandia By DAWN BECK/FASTBECKS RACING ALBUQUERQUE, NM, JULY 19-20 A brand·new Supermoto class opened in Albuquerque with a demo under the lights during Saturday night car racing at Sandia Motor Speedway and with the real race on Sunday. Local Expert and current Grandma's Music Unlimited GP series leader Keith Miller took first in the debut race, which featured a paved chicane and banked oval and a 20-foot tabletop in the dirt. Miller dominated the Formula J OOOcc event, starting third but qUickly taking the lead from Brian Herndon, who finished second. Colorado rider Glenn Conser moved through the pack after a poor start to take third at the finish. In other racing, number·one plate holder Todd Costley was a no·show, so the competi· tion in the Expert classes was as hot as the 1OO·plus-degree temperatures on the track. Coming back from a huge crash at last month's race, Brad Tinker took his second first·place finish of the series in Heavyweight Superbike, and that class featured some of the hottest racing of the day. Conser took the lead off the line, with Tinker following and Colorado rider Mike Applehans in third. Appl'ehans hit the pavement in the double apex. making way for Herndon and Arroyo Seco Motorcycle Association number· one plate holder Mike Shreve to move up. Tinker challenged Conser in every corner, but the GSX·R600 was over· powered in the straights by Conser's GSXR750. First·year Expert Tinker finally took the inside line and worked Conser in the hairpin to take the lead on lap eight. Shreve moved past Conser on the final lap for second, and Conser had to settle for third, despite a great effort. In Open Superbike racing, track veteran Dave Dikatolia jumped the start. Miller moved into the lead, and Herndon settled into second. Sandia Motor Speedway: Saving his best for the money race, Colorado rider Shane Stoyko drops his GSX·R into the hairpin en route to the win in the Grandma's Music Unlimited GP in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Shreve progressively made up ground during the big-bike race and, taking an aggressive outside line on the turn·one banked oval, passed Herndon. Then Herndon powered down the back straight. and the crowd stood to watch Shreve outbrake Herndon into turn two to finish second, behind Miller. The Grandma's Music Unlimited GP, the final race of the day, gave the Experts one more chance for heated competition. Tinker got the holeshot, but it was clear that Colorado rider Shane Stoyko, who was unable to start the Formula 1000, had saved himself for the money race, as he waltzed ahead of Tinker on lap one and ended up winning by more than half a lap. Battling for the balance of the podium, Miller moved into second, Tinker was third, and Shreve was fourth early on. Shreve pushed too hard to overtake Tinker in the double apex on lap eight and took himself out. Both Tinker and Miller pushed hard on lap nine, but Tinker wanted it more and willed his GSX·R600 ahead of Miller's Honda 929RR as they entered the hairpin, putting bikelengths between them just before the finish line_ The next races will be held August 16 and 17 in La Junta, Colorado. Against All Odds By BtAS KISIC ROSAMOND, CA, JULY 20 Despite a hopeless start, Suzuki rider Vincent Haskovec won the Toyota Cup Unlimited For· mula One race at Willow Springs International Raceway during the July round of the Willow Springs Motorcycle Club championship. Haskovec was set to start from the second row, but when all the racers got ready for the green flag, his spot on the grid was empty! Haskovec had noticed a lot of vibration in his front end; it was impossible to race under those conditions, so he dived into the pits. His mechanic was able to fix it quickly. Haskovec got on the track as the last few racers got under way. Jack Pfeifer's Sunday was far worse: He had earned a good second-row grid spot. but, since he was experimenting with a new slipper clutch, he got a poor start. Still, Pfeifer man· aged to get by several competitors right away. His progress didn't last: Trying to avoid Stephen Hewitt entering turn two, Pfeifer grabbed a handful of brakes, lost the front end and went down. Luckily. the other racers avoided him. but somehow Pfeifer's own machine hit him. The ambulance was called to the scene, and the race director red· flagged the race. It would be shortened to 10 laps. This would give Haskovec another chance to start from the second row. He couldn't believe his luck. "[It I was definitely an unbelievable break for us." said Vincent, quickly adding, Mit's unfortunate for Jack. He's okay; I'm happy about that: (When interviewed a couple of hours after the race, however, Pfeifer thought he had a broken scapula.) Stoney Landers spearheaded the start in a repeat performance of his first lunge. According to Jeremy Toye, Landers "got off the line like nobody's business." ., However, Landers had to settle on a podium position, as Haskovec and Toye sped away from the pack. His lonely race was a string of smooth and fast laps. It was a pleasure to watch him transition smoothly and skillfully from one turn to the next. Meanwhile. Haskovec and Toye swapped the lead several times. It was a fight to the bit· 'I nu'UVs
