Local riders were absolutely screaming around the track here, as Jordan Strickland annihilated the 85cc (7-11) and 65cc classes, while Jackson's Mitch Warrens ripped apart the Over 25 and Over 30 classes. JULY 19 Even really fast Experts can make dumb mistakes. That's what Mike McKay learned at the fourth round of the Riverside Old· Timers Night Series. Shaking his head in disbelief for not paying closer attention to the track conditions. McKay made an unintentional pass on the yellow nag while committing to a double. This error in judgment cost him the overall win in the Over 40 Expert class. Being docked a lap moved McKay from first back to ninth in the first moto. His second-moto win was only good enough to rank fourth overall, behind David Williams (1-2), Garry Conner (3-3) and Robert "holeshotted both motos" Esparza (4-4). Top fast guy Dave Eropkin took advantage of no competition in the Master B class to hold back on the start so he could "practice" his passing skills. Apparently. he didn't need much practice, since he worked his way through the entire field of Over 40 and Over 50 Experts before the end of the second lap! While most riders are happy to "have a doctor in the field," Paul Leos was less than thrilled to eat the roost of podiatrist les Oldenbrook as the two battled closely in the Over 50 Novice division. It looked like Leos had a fighting chance in the second moto, as he pulled the holeshot, but he couldn't hold off the KTM-mounted Oldenbrook, who took the overall with a 1-1 tally. leas (2-2) was second overall. Herb Kane (3-3) kept the leaders in sight while looking over his shoulder at Denise de Vines (5-4) and John Webb (4-5), who were both in hot pursuit. Mike Mosca put in a gallant charge from the rear to place third in the first moto of the Over 40 Amateur class, behind runner-up Gregg Pruett and winner John Estes, who again pulled a big lead over the pack in both motos for the overall with a 1-1 score. Pruett wasn't as lucky the second mota, as he stalled on the start and didn't get started until long after the second wave had left the gate. This locked up second for Mosca (3-2) and bumped Dave Shelton (4-6) to third. Results 40+ NOV: J. Danny Mamles: 2. Merk Toguchi: 3. Cam Climeron; 4. Don Sliwinski: 5. Ollie Hequembourg. 40+ AM: 1. King City Hillclimb Crazy Jake, Northrup Are No Turkeys By BUD NORTHRUP MOUNT VERNON, Il, JULY 19 Young Jacob "Crazy Jake" Tackitt was the fastest of the fast at the King City Dirt Riders Saturday night hillclimb near Mount Vernon, Illinois, on July 19. Riding Gayle Jenkins' CR500, Tackitt new over the top of the 180foot hill in a blistering 3.751 seconds on his first ride to win the 600cc class and also a beautiful Fast Time trophy and the $200 cash prize that goes with it. This is no ordinary CR500, though - it has an "automatic" clutch by Rev-Loc. which Jenkins has fine-tuned to perfection. The bike nies out of the hole with no wheel spin and applies the power to the ground as needed. Jenkins also has sponsor support from TNT Action Sports, Jansen Machine, Precision Metal and MX Tech Shocks. Jenkins brought the Honda back and rode it himself to the win in the Super Senior class with a very quick 4.201-second run. Butch Fetters was Tackitt's closest chal~ lenger in the 600cc class with a 3.84! -second run. followed by Jared McKay, Andy Fortner and Jon Creek. Tackitt's evening wasn't perfect. however: Riding his KDX200, he had one of the most unusual crashes in anyone's memory. Flying high over the top of the hill, he landed on a roosting wild turkey - the bird, not the whiskey - and he and his bike were tossed into a painful end-over-end fall down the hill. The turkey, minus. a lot of tail feathers, escaped into the woods, but the KDX could not make it back to the line for the second run. Jason Northrup was the only double-class winner of the evening. His first win came in the Open Class, where he rode the Jeff Thomasbuilt FJ 1220 over the top in 4.155 seconds for the win. Jim Redpath claimed second with a good 4.263-second run on his KZlOOO, and Harley riders Randy "Buzz" Green, Steve Shafer and R.D. Miller filled out the top five. Northrup's second win came in the Pushrod class, where he rode his BOOcc Triumph for the first time, taking a 4.331-second win. The class was extremely close, as Harley riders Green and Shafer finished second and third with times of 4.346 and 4.350 seconds, respectively. After a midpack start in moto one, Alves was in the lead by lap three, as Coty Loudenburg and Stan Finney, running one~two, got caught napping, and Alves zapped them both in one slick move at the end of a rhythm section. Alves then put a gap on the field while Finney maintained the second spot. Steven Hernandez also made his way by Loudenburg to round out the top three at the finish. In moto two, Finney got the jump on the field, with Alves and Hernandez in tow. However, Alves once again wanted nothing but the lead, so he displaced Finney before the completion of the second lap. Hernandez followed suit and took second, but he found reeling in Alves a difficult task. However, his secondplace finish gave him the runner-up spot overall, while Finney (3-2) rounded out the top three on the evening. Hernandez returned in the 125cc Intermediate class and bettered his 250cc Intermediate performance with a strong 2-1 effort. The Suzuki pilot utilized good starts, including a holeshot in moto two, to take the overall on the evening, as first-moto winner Greg Kar· mann had to rebound from a second-moto first·turn crash. Karmann clawed his way up to fourth and was rewarded with second overall on the evening. Anthony Maniglia rounded out the top three with a consistent 3-3 tally. Kawasaki jockey Joey Harris stretched his lead in the BOcc Intermediate class with an overall victory on the evening. After having three straight rounds of close battles with Luke Layton, Harris found that Layton was a noshow at round four, but Atascadero resident Bryce Huffman made the journey north to keep Harris honest. Harris took an unchal~ lenged wire-to-wire victory in moto one, with Ricky Rinauro and Marcus Bradshaw rounding out the top three. However, in moto two, Huffman, who finished fourth in the first one. grabbed the holeshot and held off Harris for a lap. Once by, Harris still had Huffman on his tail the entire moto, but he never gave up the spot. Huffman finished up second overall on the evening, while Bradshaw (3-3) rounded out the top three.
