By RANDY HElM Pax Trax MX Park: Matt Theus (22) pulls the holeshot in the first OScc Open moto, ahead of Cody Johnson (214), Drew Dunne (15) and the rest of the pack, at round two of the Moon and Stars Series in Bunnell, Florida. Theus went on to win the OScc Open and Schoolboy classes. 65 BEG (6·11): 1. Tyler Campbdl (Sla); 2. Chase Hil~dorf (KTM): 3. Dillon Varnadore: (Suz); 4. Kim· ball was a hard-fought third, Green was fourth, and McCabe came in fifth. Raubs pulled the holeshot in the 16-24 A contest and was just lOVing it. Gibson was in the second spot and again showing good speed. Green was third, with McCabe all over him. Raubs was cruising around the course, haVing fun. His timing and confidence showed all the way to the checkers. Gibson. coming into his own, held down second. McCabe got by Green for third, and Andy Salm placed fifth. "First-lap mayhem" best describes the 85cc Senior main. Kurt Manderscheid came out holding that coveted first position, fol· lowed by Chaz Braden and Kyle Williams. Eventually, Williams got by Braden for sec· and. Manderscheid, showing good form and on the gas, maintained the lead and took the win at the checkers, but Williams, in second, was closing in. Braden finished third, with Tyler Freese in fourth and Trevor Archibald in fifth. In the main event for the true masters of the track, the Over 40 A riders, Eastern Iowa motocross legend Rick Munson got the holeshot. followed by Dennis Vittetoe. These two war-torn veterans are a product of the '70s motocross era and are still kicking butt in the new millennium! Smooth and calculated, Munson carved up the Hawkeye Downs track. All the while, Vittetoe shadowed him, comer to comer, jump to jump. At the finish. Munson was first and Vittetoe second, with Jeff Houtz holding down the third spot and Frank Boyer in fourth. Moisture content in the dirt was ideal, and the track was prepped to perfection. Anyone who has ever attended or raced the Hawkeye Downs events knows just how spoiled the racers and specta· tors are. It is always a good show, and one of the main showmen of this night was the awe· some one himself, "Awesome Austin" Raubsl He posted wins in both the 125cc A and 16·24 A classes. In the 125cc A main event. Todd Walton absconded with the holeshot, with Raubs on his tail. Kurt McCabe slid out in the first turn. Walton was riding like a man possessed, but Raubs was matching his every move, giving him no breathing room. Derek Gibson was running third, with Kerry Green fourth and Nathan Kimball fifth. Just before the completion of lap one, Walton gave in to Raubs' pressure and went down hard. This tough-as-nails AUGUST 20, 2003· cue w Results Raubs Rocks the Downs 70 LIVERMORE, CA, JULY 18 It was a perfect Friday night for racing, and that's what happened. Another. great turnout of more than 300 riders came to duke it out at round four. Who wiil be the 2003 Mutant Motorsports/l Moto Friday Night Series cham· pions? That question got one race closer to being answered. With five rounds to go. the points battles are beginning to shape up. Cory McDaniel made it out again to livermore this Friday, only this time he went home with some green in his wallet. McDaniel put a whuppin' on the Pro classes, posting perfect moto scores aboard his 125cc and 250cc Suzukis. In the 125cc class, McDaniel bested Yamaha rider Tony Wolf. who received second overall with his 2-2 scores. McDaniel faced stiffer competition in the 250cc ranks but still came out on top. The rider from Manteca held it wide open and scored two more mota wins. Honda rider Adam Miller from Prunedale was runner· up, going 2·2 aboard the big. red four-stroke. I Moto·sponsored Yamaha rider Danny Paladino finished third on the night with a 3-3 tally. In the Intermediate ranks, Steven "Iceman Hernandez was doing the winning in the 125 class. Hemandez pulled off the overall with two mota wins aboard his RM. Second went to Honda·mounted Cory Loudenberg. Third for the evening was Matthew Lozada, who was also riding a Honda. Hernandez was also fast in the 250cc class, but he had to settle for second overall with 3·2 finishes. Stan Finney from Oakley was the winner, finishing 1-1 on his Honda. Concord's Gary Forrest took the final podium spot by riding his Yamaha to 2·3 finishes. Finney also scored big with a win in the half-time Dash For Cash. Let's not forget about the little guys racing out there as well. Mark Braden took wins in the 50cc (7 ·8) class, as well as the 50cc Intermediate class. Braden was riding a Polini in both outings. In the 50cc (0-6) class, Robert Nalezny was the big winner aboard his Cobra. Kyle Muller of Walnut Creek raced his KTM to 2·2 moto finishes in the 50cc Beginner class Weuve: 5. PELLETT Club Moto: Cory McDaniel was "on" at round four of the Mutant Motorsportsl I Moto Friday Night Series in Livermore, California. McDaniel went undefeated in both the 12Scc and 2S0cc Pro classes. WELl..STON, OH, JULY 18 It's pretty cool when you win one motocross race; it's even better when you win a couple but on a wonderful summer evening in Well· ston, Ohio, site of round number eight of the Ohio County Fairs Motocross Championship Series, Gabriel Muntz won three classes outright. Muntz, mounted on Hondas, is always very competitive, but this young motocrosser had not previously won three classes in one night. It was just one of those times when Muntz was "in the zone": He slashed his way around the jump-infested county fair track, winning the 85cc Extra class and the 85cc (12·15) division, as weB as the very competi· tive 125cc Schoolboy class.
