Kevin McNicholas Memorial ST SerieS Round 1: Timonium ST Greenland Grabs th,e Gold! By lEN BREECH TIMONIUM, MD, JULY 16 Austin Greenland helped launch the ninth annual Kevin McNicholas Memorial Short Track Series with wins in the 85cc and ] 25cc classes on his Greenland Masonry-sponsored machines. The Baltimore County Trail Rid· ers/Cockeysville Optimist Club-sponsored event is named for a club member who died from cystic fibrosis. The profits from this fourweek, five-race series go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. In the 85cc class, Greenland took the lead from Joey Parks, Chris MacCarty, Brian Myers and 65cc winner Tyler Kidwell. While Greenland pulled away, MacCarty started to pressure Parks from the halfway point. He took second as they began the final lap and held on for second overall. In the 125cc contest, Greenland jumped in front of Brandon Robinson, Parks and Tony Whipperman. Robinson stayed close in the early laps, making for another typical Green· land/Robinson battle, but Greenland started to pull away and had a straightaway margin at the end. Joe Dragunas put pressure on Whip· perman, finally getting by on the outside with just over a lap left for fourth spot, Doubles seemed to be the predominant theme of the evening. Raun Wood took the 250cc A and 600cc A finals in almost identical fashion. He put his Scott Power Sportssponsored Honda in front immediately, with Bryan Douglas and John Lewis right behind. Lewis slipped under Douglas coming off the fourth turn on the opening lap. Over the next seven laps, the order stayed the same, with only about a length between each rider for most of the final. In the 250cc A contest, only the addition of two riders behind the front trio changed the mix. The results were the same. The same bike won twice, also. Jim Hollis· ter easily won the Over 30 class, with Dave Smith, Jay Boarman and David Reeves bat· tling over second. Reeves took control of sec· ond as they started the fifth lap, but Hollister had already checked out. Scott Saunders borrowed Hollister's machine for use in the Over 40 class. He took the lead right away from Mike Keane, John Henderson, Mark Stambaugh and Dave Smith, Saunders easily held the iead, despite almost stalling the unfamiliar Rotax in the turns. Henderson took second on the fourth lap, Smith was moving through the field, and he engaged in a close battle for third with Keane and Stambaugh. The three came off the second turn on the seventh lap side by side, on a track that's not quite wide enough for three, especially the "wide-body" Over 40 riders, Smith's handlebar caught Keane, who went down before he knew what had happened, Smith ended up in third, and Stambaugh took fourth. The Sheckells brothers dominated the 50cc classes. Storm easily topped the 50cc (7·8) group, and Sam easily won the 50cc (4-6) class, But Sam got the large crowd cheering in the 50cc Oil·lnjected class: He was in front and started pulling away, but on the third lap he fell in turn two, re-joining in fifth place, Colton Smith. Jeremiah Snow and Carter Dumps had been battling for second; now that battle was for the lead, Sam started cutting through the field, making up the deficit. He took second as they started the final lap, but he came up a little short in his attempt to catch Smith, Bill Boram took the 600cc B lead from Chris Davis, Ryan Henderson and Jonathan Jordan. Henderson took second entering tum three on the second lap, and Jordan also moved by Davis, Jordan then started pressur· ing Henderson for second. He started working the outside line, staying beside Henderson for a few laps. On the seventh lap, they touched in the second turn, and Henderson fell. Jordan came back later and easily won the 250cc B class, ahead of Henry Mangers and Ryan Henderson. Samantha Resch led from wire to wire to win the Women's class, Jack Stedding had an easy time winning the 500cc Two-Valve contest, and Brian Eckhart topped Bryan Douglas for the 750cc win, Chris Klinefelter took the Crazies, for the "XR100-based" machines, Timonium ST Timonium. JULY 17 The sun was bright and the skies were clear in the appropriately named Circleville, Ohio, site of the July 17 AHRMA Dirt Track National, but immense clouds of dust limited visibility, for riders and spectators alike. Nevertheless, the event drew a respectable number of participants for a midweek race, thanks in part to its proximity to the Mid-Ohio Vintage Motorcycle Days race weekend, which began the following day. The most successful riders of the day were George Wills and Mike Scott, each of whom went on to Mid-Ohio with a set of double wins under his belt. Wills won the Dinosaur and Classic 500/750cc classes, and Scott topped the Vet and Sportsman 750cc classes. The Dinosaur class was a showcase for Harley-Davidsons, with Wills and the rest of the top three finishers all mounted on the American bikes. Second place went to Harley rider Dennis Clark, who fought a hard battle against fourth-place finisher Bruce Argetsinger, on a Royal Enfield, for the first half of the race, the two riders taking comers parallel to each other until Argetsinger dropped back slightly to duel with Chris Clark for third (with the position finaily going to Harley rider Clark). Second place in the Classic 500/750cc race was claimed by Merlyn "Skip" Wertz, who worked his magic to keep his Triumph just ahead of the indefatigable Harley rider Bob Litten, who placed third.
