z Southwest Vintage Racing 6roup Round 7: Quail Canyon MX Park o z '" Q ---1~ w Roberts Rules the (Finishing) Order BY SCOTT BLUNK GORMAN, CA, JULY 13 Jim Roberts showed the competition that he had the fastest lap time at SVRG's seventh round, held at Hungry Valley's Quail Canyon motocross track. In the Decade class (for bikes J 0 years old and older), there were two Expert riders who were both intent on taking the overall win for the day. As the gate dropped for moto one, Yamaha rider Rick Daniel bolted out of the gate with a clean and commanding holeshot. Honda rider Jimmy Roberts was nowhere to be found. "I got caught in the gate," he later stated. That did not slow him down. however. Roberts sliced his way through the entire pack of riders, which included the Modern Support class. Daniel was out in front. styling for the crowd and oblivious to what was transpiring behind him. Roberts caught up to Daniel by the end of the second lap and exerted pressure on him at every bump, jump and comer. The two riders battled side by side for the rest of the moto, dazzling the crowd with their high·flying antics off the tabletop jumps. Although Roberts gave Daniel fits at every corner, Daniel reached the checkered flag first. In moto two, Roberts pulled a clean holeshot, with Daniel hot on his trail. Roberts began to pull a few feet ahead of Daniel at each tum and had a comfortable lead by the time the white flag flew. Both riders again exhibited some fine jumping techniques and proper body English. Daniel did a marvelous job showing the crowd that the "cross up" is still an effective form of showmanship even in today's world of "'extreme competition. Roberts cruised in for the win, giving him the overall. The racing action in the Over 40 Intermediate class was every bit as exciting. Honda rider Roger Neil, Maico-mounted Rick Labgold. and BSA rider Keith Petrangelo battled for top honors. As mota one rolled off of the starting line, Labgold assumed the lead, with Neil and Petrangelo close behind. The trio foilowed one another around the course like a fast-moving freight train. Neil caught up to Labgold on lap two, and the battle was on' The riders were locked in a drag race from corner to corner, banging handlebars at each opportunity. Neil finally edged his Honda past Labgold for the mota win. Mota two was almost a replay of mota one, except that Neil passed Labgold early in the mota and powered away to comfortable lead. Labgold was unable to catch up to Neil and K had to settle for second overall, and Neil went on to win mota two and the overall. The Pre- 1972 Vintage class ran combined with the Junior Vintage class, and this contest exhibited some fine riding by teenager and adult alike. Junior Vintage rider Chris Henry did a fine job of keeping his 360cc Bultaco in front of the Pre· I 972 Novices. He finished second overall, behind Expert rider Anthony Loguercio, on his Husky. As the gate dropped for moto two, Loguer· cia didn't make the start. Novice rider Mike Johnstone jumped into the lead on his BSA. Henry gained ground on Johnstone, and on the second lap he made his move into first. Henry pulled away from Johnstone for an easy overall victory. JULY 13 Round 12 of the fifth annual Florida Motocross Series hit Motocross of Marion County in Red· dick, Florida. The elements also hit the track partway through the second round of motos. The riders endured two different tracks on the same day: One track was tacky, and the other was sloppy and wet. The rider who adapted the best was Dean Dyess III, a.k.a. "D3: If Dyess didn't get the holeshot, this Suzuki rider would have the checkered flag in hand by the end, winning four motos on the day. Michael Schwartz was fourth, ahead of a whole pack of riders - four others, to be exact. Brad Garritson was fifth going into the last lap but made a costly mistake. dropping to seventh. Rounding out the top five was Matt Lee. The second mota saw Schwartz abscond with the holeshot, with Dyess close behind. Dyess wasted no time and made the pass before the Anthill on the first lap. Schwartz came under fire from Donley on the second lap. Donley went through the rhythm section smoother and faster to take second. Donley moved out a few seconds by halfway, as did Dyess out front. Camden Cruz was the next to hound Schwartz, but he could never make a pass. The two closed up on Donley in the closing stages of the race. Donley held on to second· barely· with Schwartz and Cruz next. Dyess cruised out front, winning the mota, and he did a one-hander for the crowd while whipping it sideways. Holding on to fifth was Troy Snyder. In the first 125cc B moto, Dyess was out front, with Eric Stewart close behind. The two pulled out for a race-long battle for the win. Stewart made an inside pass to take the lead in the early stages. Dyess hounded the Yamaha rider, waiting for his moment. Dyess waited long enough, as Stewart fell in the Mystery Pit; trying to come back up, he got twisted in a rut. Dyess went on to win, and Stewart held on for second. Ryan Warren held third the entire time to round out the podium. Charging through the pack was Cruz, who started seventh: he picked off one or two riders every lap to finish fourth. Cale Flage was a close fifth. Stewart got the lead in the second mota, but Dyess was right there once again. Matthew Pedrero was third, followed by Joshua Hildebrand and Cody Walker. Hildebrand slipped along the woods, as the conditions were slippery and wet from the big rainstorm. Stewart and Dyess raced bar to bar for the lead, and on the second lap they clipped handlebars. Stewart went down and decided to call it a day. leaving Dyess all alone out front. Pedrero moved up to second, but he was the next to slide down, handing second to Walker. After starting eighth, Cruz moved up to third. Dyess won his fourth mota on the day, celebrating with style. Walker held off a charging Cruz for the runner-up spot, and Hildebrand recovered for fourth. Warren made it up to fifth. The combined 85cc (14-15) and (12-13) contest came to a different conclusion than everyone would have predicted. In the first moto, Dustin Jensen led T.J. Tiffany, T.J. Rhoneelli, Gary Cavanagh and Cameron Doyle. Jensen and Tiffany pulled out to battle between themselves. Tiffany made the pass at halfway. Jensen stuck close but never retaliated, Rhoneelli finished a lonely third. Bobby Tiesler came charging through the pack and won a three-rider battle for fourth, over Dalton Yingling and Cavanagh. Mota two was run in the tough. wet conditions. Jensen had the best view out front, as everyone else was getting the mud off their goggles. Cavanagh was second, ahead of Tiffany, Rhoneelli and Travis Bikowicz. Tiffany struggled as the two front-runners put some distance on him. Jensen won the mota by a good gap over Cavanagh. Tiffany slid in for third, RhoneelJi was fourth, and Yingling made it to fifth. The Supermini contest was a wild one. In the first mota, the young Jesse Freeman outran Tiffany for the win. Tiesler was third, cue I e ahead of Kenneth Hill and Jimmy Page. The second mota was a complete turn around, due to the track conditions. Doyle kept his Yamaha gOing, while all the top riders were having trouble. Doyle beat Freeman to the line for the win.
