JULY 19 The father-daughter race team of Van and Tasha Rayburn made a clean sweep at Swainsboro Flat Track. Van won the Over 40 and MX classes, while Tasha won the Street and Trail class. Van was in control for most of the Over 40 main event. Larry Davis stayed close and kept Rayburn honest. When the checkers flew, it was Van taking the big win on his DE.D Cycles machine. Davis settled for second. In the MX class, Van was in command the entire race, setting a blistering pace out front and pulling a comfortable lead, leaving Ashley Colson and Hunter Aldrich rubbing plastic for second from start to finish. After going back and forth for several laps, Colson took second. and Aldrich grabbed the final podium spot aboard his Aldrich Construction ride. Some of the most exiting racing of the night came in the Street and Trail class. Tasha and Patton Sassaman swapped the lead repeatedly, while local riders Zade Scarboro and Tyler Edwards had an equally intense battle for third. Tasha secured the lead on the final lap aboard her Yamaha. Sassaman was only a few feet behind on his Macon HarleyDavidson-backed machine. Scarboro ended up third, and Edwards was a very close fourth on his Suzuki. Another double-class winner on the night was Pro rider Noot Irvin, who had his way with the Open Pro and Pro-Am classes. Honda of Statesboro/Low Country Machinery rider Chase Sconyers grabbed the holeshot in Open Pro action. Irvin applied some serious pressure to Sconyers on the opening lap and took the lead. While Irvin set sail out front, Sconyers got a firm grip on second. Cycle Shop Racing rider Joel Henson was charging hard, with Snipes logging ace Kevin Snipes on his heels in fourth. Irvin's Augusta Harley-Davidson/ PBW/JE.M Racing Products teammates Cole and Tadpole Pulliam were recovering from bad starts and making their way to the front. In the end, Irvin took the win, Sconyers was a comfortable second. and Henson held tough for third. The night's holeshot artist, Chase Sconyers, nailed the start once again in the Pro-Am class. Irvin and Tadpole were in the lead pack as well. Irvin again took the lead early and checked out. Sconyers had his hands full keeping second from Tadpole and Cole, as well as Henson. IrvIn kept padding his lead out front. Sconyers settled into second, while Tadpole muscled his way into third for the final podium spot. Henry Cabinet's hotshoe Jeff Henry got the holeshot in the highly competitive Over 30 class, but after several laps he was overtaken by Jimmy Armstrong. This was Armstrong's first race in several years, but apparently he still has the skills to run out front. Armstrong pulled a disappearing act, while Troy Abels I want to be a Pro someday. I had a lot of fun racing. All I was thinking was, 'I want to win!'" He must have moto fever! The 125cc C class lined up, and of the 28 riders, the holeshot went to KTM rider Eric Gould. Ross Andrews was right on Gould's rear fender, but by the end of lap one, Gould had opened up a seven-second lead over Andrews. Steven Harrison moved into the mix, followed by John Sedlarik. There were surprises taking place all through the pack, and Hamish Howard from Ontario, Canada. was involved in most of them. Howard worked his way from midpack to fifth. When the fieid made the last run to the checkers, Andrews had slipped to fourth, behind Gould, Harrison and Sedlarik. In moto two, Gould rocketed into the first tum, fighting Howard for the holeshot. Gould then opened up a 17 -second lead over Andrews, who was being chased by John Doktor in third. On lap three, though, Gould slipped back to third, moving Andrews into first and hard-charging Chad Nedo into second. Gould recovered quickly and repassed Nedo for second. and he was allover Andrews at the checkered fiag. In the end, the top three overall positions went to Gould, Andrews and Harrison. pushed his big 650cc Honda into second. Brian Hodges was third. Henry was shuffled back to fourth. Armstrong won convincingly in his comeback appearance. Abels took second. and Hodges was third on his Charlie Sabatka Suzuki. Results 50: I. T~ Amerson (Yam); 2. Ky~ SnI~1 (Yam). 65: 1. MI, JULY 19 Baja MX takes pride in its race program for Junior riders. The Pee Wee track at Baja uses the big track's starting gate. and the layout is a great small-rider version of the big track. Berms, whoops and tabletops make up the obstacles. and the eight-lap moto format gives the youngsters lots of seat time. This was a special weekend for all in attendance. because Baja was giving away two four-packs of passes to Six Flags of Cleveland. Tyler Whittaker had never raced before, didn't have an AMA card and had only ridden his new bike three times. All the other kids on the starting line were intense and race-ready, but when the gate dropped for the 50cc (4-6) Beginners, Whittaker took off with a speed rarely seen in a first-time racer. He was followed closely by Brendyn Snell and Drew Rocheleau. After the first turn, Whittaker opened up a lead. Snell was very consistent and kept the same pace throughout the moto, while Rocheleau seemed to be squeezing every bit of speed out of his Yamaha. The next moto was similar: Snell, Rocheleau and now Jacob Yurk were all battling in a pack, with Whittaker rounding the course ahead of them. That's how they finished overail. "My favorite Pro is a Ricky Carmichael," Whittaker said in the pit afterward. "When I was little. I called him Ricky Crossmichael - I don't know why· but that's his nickname now! .....
