The Little Lyon That Roared By GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE, CA, JULY 19 When the dust finally settled, it was Jake Lyon who came out on top of a five-way points tie to claim the 65c( Beginner-class overall honors at Los Angeles County Raceway, during the Sub-Machine-sponsored round of California Racing Club's Saturday night motocross. The opening moto was a DilJan Epstein benefit, as the Riders' Edge-backed KTM rider absconded with the holeshot and then disappeared, letting everyone else fight over second place. R.J. Wageman settled into second place after a lap on the J.B. Memorial Track, ahead of Shelby Ward, Steven Kirk and Augie Ortiz. Dalton Bailey just may have been the fastest rider in the first moto after looping out off the starting line, as he came from dead last all the way up to second place by the midway point. where he would finish, behind Epstein. Third place was up in the air until the final circuit, with Wageman holding off Ward at the checkers. Kirk rounded out the top five. ahead of Lyon who overcame a first-lap fall to finish sixth. Epstein was quickest out of the gate in mota two to lead Bailey, Ward, Lyon and Wageman. Bailey crashed himself to the back of the pack on tap one, and Epstein did the same a lap later. Lyon inherited the top spot and continued on uncontested aboard his Saugus Suzuki/Motohead-backed RM65 to sew up the overall with a 6-1 night. Kirk's runner-up second-moto performance gave him the second-place trophy. over the 4-3 score of Ward, the 3-4 score of Wageman and the 2-5 tally of Bailey. Cory Redenious dominated both 125cc Novice motos on his YoshimirajSmithjNoFear-backed YZ250F. Redenious made his way to the front of the pack on the opening lap of both races and then disappeared. Anatal Kozlowski turned a pair of midpack starts into consistent 3-3 finishes for second overall, topping the 2-4 score of Sean Kranyak and the 4-5 finishes of David Robertson. Shane Smith easily ran away with both 250cc Pro outings on his JMG Motorsportsj Answer-sponsored CRF450R. Robert Skinner used 3-2 finishes to claim the second-place payback, over the 2-4 score of Luke Off and the 4-3 efforts of Mike Collier. SOMETIMES WHAT PROTECTS YOU THE MOST IS MADE OF PAPER.
