Hall cut to the inside and tried to pass Hightower going up the triple step-up and again around the next corner, but Hightower held him off. Looping around to the back straightaway, Hall hammered again. cutting to the inside and accelerating, and this time he pulled it out and passed Hightower to recap· ture first place. Meanwhile, Whitmarsh, in fourth, immediately put pressure on Atkins, cutting to the inside on corners, and he successfully made the pass for third. The first four riders temporarily spread out, but the rough track conditions and tight corners kept closing the gaps, allowing Dotson to crank it up and squeeze past Atkins to take third. In a disappointing turn of events, a mechanical problem forced Hightower to pull off the track near the finish-line jump, but Whitmarsh stepped right up and pressured Hall at the start of the new lap and took over as the new leader. Meanwhile, Suzuki rider Matt Karlsen had worked his way up from the back of the pack, and he charged past Atkins on the back straightaway. On the next two laps, Hall fell from second to fourth, as Dotson and Karlsen took turns passing him. The first mota ended with Whitmarsh first, followed by Dotson, Karlsen and Hall. In the second malo, Dolson stayed out front the entire race, making it look easy, avoiding a crash by jumping away from a lapped rider who went down next to him and doubling, tripling and then doubling out of the back rhythm section. The rest of the pack was left to fight it out. Atkins moved into second, jumping up and around Whitmarsh. While the two battled, Karlsen came up and passed Whitmarsh to take over third and then chased down Atkins, twice jumping up the triple stepup to land next to Atkins, but Atkins held him off until the rhythm section. Capturing second, Karlsen went on a hunt for Dotson, while a mechanical problem took Atkins out and put Whitmarsh back in the run for a podium spot. with Hightower and Hall close behind. On the final lap, after an otherwise flawless ride, Dotson bobbled slightly, allowing Karlsen to close the gap and putting the fans on the edges of their seats. Through the last two corners, it was side by side; Karlsen made a last-ditch effort, but Dotson took the checkers for the second· mota win, followed by Karlsen, Whit· marsh and Hightower. . Overall, Dotson was first, Whitmarsh placed second, and Karlsen was third. BENEFITTING PARTS c9DUN£DP UNLIMITED - -- ICob). 50 (7.8) STK: I. Gavin Silv~r (Cob): 2. Keenan Davis (Cob); 3. "CJiD9~ What do you get if you mix three Bostroms, three Haydens and three Goberts with a shot of Sorensen? A Pit Daddy cocktail and one's being served at Virginia International Raceway after the main race on Sunday August 31. This unforgettable beauty pageant has become the Clayton Memorial Foundation's top fund raiser and the Championship's most talked about event. Preparations for the second annual Pit Daddy beauty contest are underway as America's top road racers train for the second most prestigious trophy in the series. Over $15,000 was raised during last year's event for the Clayton Memorial Foundation, which provides aid for injured motorcycle racers. Almost every male AMA road racer you can think of will be a part of a beauty pageant that will feature two categories: formal wear and swimwear. Pit Daddy judges will ignore speed and skill, will pay scant attention to style and grace, and focus oh-so-c1osely on pecks and butts. If you can't make it to VIR you can still take part. ThDusands of dollars worth of prizes are being raffled that evening and tickets are available on-line for just $5. You can also send a dance tip to your favorite rider and your donation will go directly to help the blind. For a full list of prizes, contestants and updates go on-line to: Results 50 (4-6) STK: I.
