JUNE 29 Digging deep and driving hard, many of the best riders from Ohio and the surrounding states went at it for trophies, money, series awards and contingency money at the initial round of Ohio's Buckeye State Motocross Championship Series. More than 400 eager competitors tore around this riverside circuit in 76 JULY 30,2003' cue I IE! Nelsonville. There was some great, close racing in the older age classes, as fast old guys such as Mike Blair, FoS Suzuki's Mike Morgan and Chucky Reed, and Honda pilots Matt Powers and Brian Gonser fought off even older fast guys such as "King" Richard Robinson and former Pro rider and 1980 AMA Red Bud National winner Denny Swartz. The Suzuki-mounted Morgan was most probably the fastest of the Vets on the day, taking the Over 30 A class away from Blair, while Blair held on for the Over 25 A-class overall. The "King" was master of the "super old dudes" division, storming off with the rocking*chair class overall aboard his Classic Cycles Honda CRF450R. Dr. Robert Sparks was the man in the Vet B classes, taking the overalls in both the Over 25 and Over 30 race action. The kids also had a fun day on promoter Drew Wolfe's natural*terrain course. The tal* ented Brightwell brothers tore up a few class* es. Younger brother Hunter captured the over* all honors in the 50cc (7-8) division, while older bro Walker slammed his Suzukis home first in the 65cc and 85cc (7 -11) classes. The Pro classes were back in full battle mode after the Midwest Supercross Champi* onships races the night before at the adjoining stadium-style track, with Jeff Gibson, Nathan Skaggs, Chris and David Whitcraft, Derek Sturgell and "Wild" Willy Browning all stuffing each other through the tree-side ruts and turns of this serpentine racecourse. Gibson made it through some falls and bobbles to take the 250cc Pro class, and Chris nailed down the 125cc money races, with Gibson in second. Results 50 OIL-INJ: I. Logan Piccirillo (Cob); 2.
