Walden Playboys Motocross Park Leavitt Alone Out Front By MAn WOZNEY PLATTEKILL, NY, JUNE 29 A sunny day finally hit the Northeast. The racing"'Was also bright, with more than 700 riders coming to Walden on this weekend. One rider ·who shined especially bright, exciting the crowd with his speed and talent, was Yamaha rider Mike Leavitt. The Thor·backed Leavitt went on a win· ning binge at Walden, with ones across the board in three classes. He won the 125cc A, 250cc A and Collegeboy classes. These wins didn't come easily, however, for the Gardiner, New York. native. His competition consisted of former National Pros Carlo Coen and Kurt McMillen, defending District 34 Expert champion Terry Finkle, and Yamaha riders Andrew Pingotti and Mark Waldele. as well as local Expert riders Joe Beatty, Adam Wald and Jacob Radulewicz. Leavitt showed his talent and skill on the track and was able to defeat these riders in all of his classes. Since jumping from his Kawasaki to the Yamaha four· strokes Jast year. Leavitt has been faster than ever before. Be sure to keep an eye out for this rider at Loretta Lynn's and some of the local Pro Nationals. The top 85cc rider of the day was Kawasaki jockey Kyle Hutson, who is backed by MXWired.com. Hutson got two overall wins in the Senior Mini and Supermini classes at Walden. However. he didn't win by large mar· gins. Moroney's Cycle/Action Photos rider Mike Stryker kept him honest in both classes. Stryker was able to beat Hutson in the first mota of each class, but Hutson got better starts in both of his second motos, and that made the difference. Stryker was able to stay behind him but never got the chance to get by Hutson. FollOWing Hutson and Stryker in both classes was Suzuki pilot Adam Blessing, who went 3·4 in the Senior Mini class and 3-2 in the Supermini contest. In the Schoolboy class, KTM rider Chris Laughnane made it a I-I sweep, over the fast Michael Dupont, who finished with a 2-2. Hutson scored a 3-3 tally. KTM rider Jordan Crawford finished fourth overall. and Stryker finished fifth overall with a 6-5 tally. In the Women's class, Suzuki jockey Athena Stefanou took a surprising 1- 1 sweep over the very competitive field. Haley Burke finished second overall aboard her Suzuki with a 3-2 finish. Despite an injury incurred on the day, Yamaha rider Christina Basna got third overall with a 2-3 finish. Rounding out the top five were Kawasaki rider Catlyn Dinan and Suzuki rider Nicolle Bums. Alabama Promoters Group Mi\ior Events: Alabama Championship Races - Delta Raceway Smith's the Best in the Midwest By MAD MEDIA DELTA, OH, JUNE 29 The Michigan Racing Association provided a great track and prizes for the 16th annual Best In the Midwest shootout. The turnout was strong again this year. The two-day event fea· tured a three-moto format, with the third moto counting as double points. The shootout brought in many great racers. including Florida's Brandon Cunningham, who put on a c1in· ic. Cunningham's long resume includes a number of years in the Pros. as well as his highly acclaimed work as a motocross school instructor. Cunningham raced the Vet Over 30 class and won both motos. In mota two, the real action was between Dave Bowman and Ben Hincher as they battled for second. Bowman pushed his Tech-Care Suzuki to catch Hincher's Yamaha at the flag but couldn't get it done. Hincher rode a flawless mota to take second, with Bowman placing third. Mota three saw Cunningham once again get the holeshot despite a poor jump off the gate. Hincher rounded the track in second, with Bowman third. On lap three, Bowman came around in first, with Cunningham and Hincher close behind. Cunningham recovered and, on the next lap, took back the lead after a good ,--------------------------------------,,. w ~ ~ ::; ,. "' 5 r a. Hincher had a problem on lap four and settled into third. The Ohio summer sun was turning up the heat, as was the 250cc Expert class. The battle between Suzuki jockey Jamie Brockman and KTM rider Brad Smith was one for the record books. Smith got the mota-two holeshot but was quickly passed by Brockman. Smith made a move on lap two and took the lead. Brockman latched onto his rear fend· er and followed closely until the white flag came out. Brockman then charged to catch and pass Smith at the checkers. Ryan White came through the pack to work his way into third. despite a sore knee. "Smith is a great rider." Brockman said after the moto. "and I knew if I got in front of him, he would have pressured me throughout. So I worked to stay with him and made my move at the end." For both Brockman and Smith, moto three was a must· win in order to clinch the overall. Smith put his KTM in the first turn ahead of the field, followed once again by Brockman. Brockman was inching up on Smith when, on lap six, his Suzuki developed a flat rear tire. Smith took control and finished his perfect mota for the win and the overall as the "Best in the Midwest." Even with a flat rear tire, Brockman was able to stay fast and hold on to second. White tried to get past Brockman but ran out of time and ended up a close third. Matt Ray finished fourth. From flat tires to constant lead changes, this three·moto race provided a great challenge for all the riders. Everyone enjoyed get· ting to see some of the best motocross racing around, and it was a great chance for everyone to see the Best in the Midwest! Results 50 (4-6) BEG STK: 1. Seth Ferguson (Yam): 2.
