Healy Haul at REM Saturday MX By ROCKY HASH SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 28 Triple·digit temperatures taxed riders and machines alike as racers gathered for a midsummer Racing Enterprises Motorsports' weekly Saturday motocross. Though it was already 100 degrees out by noon, the REM crew kept the track well-watered throughout the day so that dust was not a problem, and thankfully most Southern Californians have learned to keep themselves well-hydrated and in the shade, so there were no heat-related health problems to speak of. Although it was scored according to class, the 80cc division was run as a combined race on one gate this week, which made things interesting. Rick Peterson Motorsports rider Shawn Hayes ended up winning both motos to take the overall class win and first Intermediate. Hayes grabbed the holeshot in moto one aboard his RPM-tuned-and-modified KTM SX 92 big-bore and never looked back, as he eas· ily took the win. First-placed Junior rider Andrew De Arcos was next across the line for second, right in front of second-placed Junior rider Billy Musgrave. In moto two, Hayes again ripped the holeshot and set a blistering pace out front as the rest of the pack gave chase. Hayes appeared to be putting on a repeat performance of his first race, but just past the halfway point, he made a mistake in a tricky rhythm section and stepped off. By the time he remounted his bike and re-joined the race, Hayes was in fourth. De Arcos now led, but with each lap, Hayes picked off a rider and moved in on the leader. On the white-flag lap, Hayes made a pass stick and took over the point, which he held until the checkered flag flew. De Arcos was again second place and first Junior, while Musgrave took third and second Junior. N-Style's Rob Healy came away with two overall class victories on the day. Piloting his YZ250 bedecked with a flashy N-Style graphics treatment, Healy dominated both the Vet Juniors and the Over 40 Experts. In the Vet Junior ranks, Healy took two holeshots and led each lap of both motos for the convincing overall win on the day. Don Bizzy (2-2) was second aboard his Honda CRF450R, and Glen Helen Raceway Park: Shawn Hayes topped the 80cc Intermediates at the REM Saturday motocross in San Bernardino, California, 74 JULY 30, 2003' eye Yamaha YZ450F rider Gary Harada (3-3) took third. In the Over 40 Expert class, Healy also took home the first-place honors with a 1-1 performance, but this time he had to make a couple of late passes in the second moto to secure the result. Randy Skinner led most of the race the second time out on his screaming yellow Suzuki RM 125, and eventually he was able to turn his 5-2 rides into second overall for the day. Jim Rose rode his Honda CRF450R to a third-place finish via a 4-3 tally. e 65 BEG: 1. Zachary Pillow (KllW); 2. Dallas Leedom (Kaw); 3. Jordan Giorgone (Kaw). BO BEG: 1. Austin Harmon (Kaw); 2. Cahokia Creek Hillclimb Crazy Jake Goes Up the Creek By BUD NORTHRUP WHITE CITY, IL, JUNE 28 Jacob "Crazy Jake" Tackitt had quite a night for himself at the Cahokia Creek Dirt Riders hillclimb, taking three class wins and the overall fast time of the night. Tackitt's first win came in the 200cc class, where he is in a battle for the points championship with "Flash Gordon" Green. Tackitt turned in a 4.220~second run on his first ride on his KDX200 to take the lead, but Green nailed a 4.189·second run to move ahead in the second round. Tackitt was up to the challenge, however, and carded a 4.118-second run to take the lead and gain five points in the points race. Tackitt's second win came in the hot 600cc class. Butch "Fearless" Fetters set the time to beat in the first round with a fine 3.753-second run on his KX500, and Crazy Jake wasn't even in the top 10. He was riding Gayle Jenkins' CR500, newly fitted with an automatic clutch, and was learning how to ride it. But he learned fast, flying it over the top in a blistering 3.683 seconds on his second ride to take the class win and set the fast time to that point of the event. John Scroggins was right with him, his 3.684-second time missing by only one-thousandth of a second, moving him into second place and pushing Fetters down to third. "Fast Andy" Fortner burst Tackitt's fasttime bubble in the 750cc class when he rode his screaming Kawasaki triple over the 120foot hill in 3.662 seconds to take the class win and the Fast Time award. Paul Hillard claimed second with a 3.800-second time on his triple, and John Potter, also running a triple, took third. Tackitt's third win came in exhibition action, the "King of the Hill" one·run shootout for the 10 fastest riders of the night. Again riding the Jenkins Honda, Tackitt flew over the top in 3.481 seconds to take the special tro· phy donated by Kaleb Northrup and his www.kingofthehill.org website. The Fast Time award goes to the fastest time in the District 17 classes, so that honor stayed with Fortner. nevvs: In Youth action, Shane Green ran his win streak to six straight - and an incredible 12 of 13 climbs - in the 85cc Junior Mini class. Green turned a 4.734-second time on his first ride, and it held up all night in the class of 13 riders. Results 50: I. Garretl Holycross (Suz): 2. Kaylee Cox (Hus): 3. Cory Scroggins (Yam); 4. Dutch Sport Park Motocross Bass Reels In the Win at Dutch Sport MX By LARRY WITMER BLOOMINGDALE, MI, JUNE 28-29 Kenny Bass took his Nevins KTM into the winners' circle by winning both motos of the highly competitive 65cc division at Dutch Sport Park. Zachary Hays took the opening-moto holeshot, with 36 65cc machines sounding like buzz saws right behind him. Taylor Davis ran second, Bass was third. and North End Cycle's Tyler Burdin got a great start in fourth. Bass went to work on the opening lap, passing Davis in the double-double tabletop section. Bass then had to work for it to pass the fast Hi Tech Horsepower ride of Hays. Bass made a bid for the lead on the second lap, in the offcamber section of the "Muskrat Run" area. Bass did it with an outside·line drive. taking over the lead and holding the point to the checkers. Taylor passed Hays coming toward the white flag with an inside line over the finish-line jump. Bass won the moto. with both Taylor and Hays just behind, keeping the heat on. The second moto was all Bass_ He absconded with the holeshot and went wire to wire. Hays carded second on the holeshot turn, with Davis third. Davis was working on passing Hays on the second lap but went down hard in the switchbacks. Bass earned a great win on the day, with Hays second overall. Alex Ditton. a regular in the 65cc division, suffered a hard get-off in Saturday's program. Everyone wishes him a speedy recovery. In the $Extreme moto. Travis Sewell nabbed the holeshot for the $100 holeshot money. Derek Rose was close in second, and Fred Karrle ran third. Rose struck past Sewell early on the first lap to take over the lead, and he checked out on the field for the rest of the 20-minute money mota. Sewell held on to the runner-up slot until the last lap, when the Karrle brothers, Fred and Gedde, turned up the heat on the second-place spot. At the checkers, it was all Rose with the win, Gedde Karrle coming back from a bad start for second spot, and Sewell holding on to third. Rose took the big check in Victory Circle on his Growe/FMF/MotoXXX ride. Gedde was all smiles with second overall. "I want to thank Loomis Cycle, Frese, Thor, Scott, Pro Action and Parts Unlimited for the support," Gedde said.
