local this year and promptly came out and aced both of his 250cc Pro motos at round two of the AMP Top Gun Summer·X Series. Piloting a Clawson MotorsportsjPro Circuit/Smith/Thor·backed Honda CRF450R. Holland grabbed the holeshot in both motos and rode a pair of mistake-free races en route to the wins. Behind him, though, the racing was intense as Daniel Blair, Billy Jurevich and Craig Truglio fought over the runner·up spot. Blair was in control in moto one. taking sec· and ahead of Jurevich and Truglio, but while challenging Jurevich for the second spot in moto two, the Powerhouse/Race Tech/Acerbis/DC Shoes-sponsored rider went down on the second lap. Jurevich held the position all the way to the checkers. giving him second overall on the evening. while Truglio (4·5) rounded out the top three. With Holland not contesting the 125cc Pro class, Jurevich swapped wins with Vincent Blair, and it was Jurevich taking the ail-important mota-two win for the overall on the evening. For the second week in a row, due to yet another strong shOWing on the evening, Jurevich had to start in the last spot in the evening's main ev.ent, the Top Gun Shootout. Holland was right in front of him, while SDMX/O·Neal/Maxxis Tires/One Industries· backed Scott Davis earned the very front spot in the 12-rider field after an inconsistent DNF3 score for ninth overall in the 250cc Pro class actually had hjm as an alternate coming into the program. However, Jeff Pestana, who also had a rough night, pulled out due to illness, and Davis snagged his spot. Davis pulled a gap on the field early on. but a 15·lap event meant that Holland and Jurevich had time to reel him in. Blair, who started about midpack, was also a factor. By the halfway point, both Holland and Blair were making up ground in a hurry, and they sat in the third and fourth spots, respectively, behind Levi Reid. Then disaster struck for both riders: Holland dropped the front end in the whoop section. sending himself cartwheeling into the ensuing berm; just moments later, Blair got impatient and tried to make a move on Reid, only to go down in the process. Davis cruised in for the win, while Reid and Blair rounded out the top three. "I was keeping tabs on what was going on behind me, and I saw Rusty catching me," said Davis. MI was going to wick it up, and all of a sudden he was gone, and just moments later I saw Blair go down, so I was kind of able to relax the rest of the race. I'm glad I came out for the race, because after my crash in the first 250cc moto, I was almost ready to call it a night." Starwest Cycle Park Nelson Throws Away ROTMX Win By MX DIVA MORENO VALLEY, CA, JUNE 28 Top Masters Dave Eropkin, Scotty Walker Jr. and Dana Nelson banged bars in a three-way dice during the second round of The OldTimer's Summer Nights Series. Three laps into the first mota, Walker zapped Eropkin for the lead. To both riders' surprise, the ]25· mounted Nelson did an amaZing double-pass on the last lap. It looked like Nelson had the win wrapped up as he flew off the back· straightaway jump, but in midair he literally threw away his bike to avoid landing on a 11Ipped rider. Nelson did not finish the first moto and barely limped through the second moto. leaving the accolades to Eropkin (]']), Walker (2·2) and Greg Williams (3·3). Bruce Games did his typical charge from last place to win the first moto in the Over 40 Amateur division, edging out John Estes. Mid· way through his second-moto dash, Games went down, bequeathing the overall win to Estes (2·]), followed by Todd Lesser (4·2) and Louie Springer (3·6). Still, rumor has it that this was Games' last ride as an Amateur! The Over 40 Experts mixed it up big-time in both matos, enabling Marty Westerman's consistent second-place finishes to score the etverall victory. Second·place honors went to Steve Donaldson (4·1). followed by Phil Cruz (3·3) and Patlmbriale (1·5). 40.. NOV: 1. Cam Cameron: 2. Morrow Fleet; 3. Steven Holtrmm; 4. Chris Dyer; 5. Quitman Speedway Groce Grabs the Gold By JIM ANDERSON QUITMAN, TX, JUNE 28 In the piney woods of East Texas, just two hours east of Dallas, lies a perfectly groomed fifth·mile. oval. red·clay. banked track that plays host to flat-track fanatics from near and far. With classes for any age. skill and displacement, Quitman Speedway prOVides an opportunity for all to slide their way to fame and glory. In the Open Pro class, Bennie Killingsworth-sponsored Don Groce piloted his Rotax to a heat win, as did local icon Joe Snyder, on his Knight·framed Rotax. This set the stage for a classic showdown in the main. All eyes at the standing-room-only facility were on the starting line as the Pro riders took to the track. Roaring off the line. Snyder, Groce and James "Monkey" Benningfield thundered into turn one and then slid around turn two. but Snyder's start was deemed a little too premature, and the race was redflagged, and Snyder was sent to the back for the restart. Groce quickly shot his orange-and-white bullet into the lead on the restart, snatching the holeshot ahead of Monkey, on an ex-Terry Poovey Knight /Rotax, and quick starter Sny· der. Immediately, Snyder went to work on the Monkey's rear tire, but the cagey veteran would not be displaced that quickly; it took four laps before Snyder could slide through to second, ultimately making his move up the inside of turn three and getting a better drive on Monkey out of turn four. Setting his sights on Groce, Snyder (the father of factory Harley-Davidson Pro dirt·track phenom Jen~ nifer Snyder) put on an impressive charge that led him right onto Groce's rear wheel at the white nag. Groce was putting on a show in the lead, sliding sideways and covering his lines perfectly, leaVing Snyder little choice but to attempt to square off turns three and four and outdrag Groce to the line. In the end. though, the deficit was too great, and Groce claimed a well-earned victory and the accompanying cash. Monkey leapt into the lead of the Mad Dog contest, followed by Pro Tan's "Smokin' Joe" Prussiano and Athens Suzuki's Scott Isbell. Hot on the leaders' heels were dueling Yamaha riders Geoff Kieffer and John "Fearless' Farrington, XR 1OO·mounted Ted York. and Jim Anderson. stinking up the back on the YZ80. In the battle for fourth, York charged through on the inside of Farrington on the fourth of 10 laps and set his sights on Kieffer. Selting Kieffer up. York dashed to the inside entering turn one and encouraged Kieffer to go wide on the exit of turn two. with Farrington coming through as well, York and Farrington battled their way onto Isbell's rear wheel in the closing laps, and at the white flag you could have thrown a blanket over the trio as they took their last trip around the red oval. Isbell, though, was not to be denied, and as York attempted an outside pass through turns three and four and Farrington tried the inside, Isbell held a perfect line and outmotored them to the line. n e vv s JULY 30.2003 73
