the lead. Wade caught a break when Johnson went down, moving into fourth, behind Thompson. A late-mota mistake by Stevens moved both riders up a spot, while Stevens dropped back to fifth. When the white flag came out, Doss had a comfortable lead out front, but behind him the race for second was in full swing. Wade made the pass with only a little bit of track remaining, securing second, ahead of Thompson. Behind them, Arturo Garcia picked up fourth, ahead of Stevens. Stevens got a great jump on the field in the second mota. setting the pace for the class ahead of Thompson and Garcia. Doss was having a tougher time of things in the second mota, and the overall was at stake. Doss struggled through the first two laps but made the second half of the mota count; it was in the last two laps that he did his best riding. Garcia moved around Thompson, and Doss gave chase. After making a long charge up to Thompson's back fender, the riders were locked in a tight battle for second. It went all the way down to the last corner, with Doss making the pass to nail down third and polish off the overall with a 1-3 score. Stevens' 5-1 earned him second overall, ahead of the 4-2 score of Garcia. Thompson finished the day with 3-4 finishes for fourth overall, ahead of the 2-6 tally of Wade. Andrew Pierce stole the show in the 50cc (4-6) class, rocketing his way to a pair of moto wins and the overall. Pierce was unstoppabie as he picked up the holeshot and proceeded to pull away from the field in both motos. Behind him. Jay Dearing and Ken Neal had a close battle for second in each mota. Neal got the best of Dearing the first time out, but the two had a tight back-and-forth battle in the second mota, with Dearing topping Neal for second overall. Cameron McCarthy finIshed with a pair of fourth-place finishes, ahead of the 5-5 tally of Marshall Lawrance, who rounded out the top five. 60 JR (7·9): I. Aaron Reynolds (Kaw): 2. Virginia Championship Hare Scrambles Series Round 7: Harleywood Greer's Happy Harleywood Ending BY HEATHER GREER BRISTOL, VA, JUNE 22 Most of the time, dairy cows occupy the hills of the Harley Dairy Farm in Bristol, Virginia, but on this day their turf was taken over by RVs. trailers and. of course, motorcycles. Riders got a preview of Harleywood with a two-hour practice ride the day before the race. This gave them the opportunity to learn where the tight tums were on the fast fire roads and other tricky sections the l1-mile course had to offer. Many riders commented on how techni· cal the course was, with one rider noting, "It seemed liked there were more X's on the trail than arrows." Motor Imports/Scott/Answer-backed Kawasaki rider Daniel Morrison was the first to run to his bike and get it started on the Le Mans-style start of the AA class. Jimmy's Cycle Sales/MSR-backed KTM rider Stephen Edmondson nudged Casey Cycle City/ChickfiI-A/Beach Eye Care-sponsored Jason Greer to the outside to take control of second going into the woods. Greer chased Edmondson for most of the first lap until Edmondson's front tire washed out on a sharp downhill turn, putting him on the ground. Greer got around Edmondson and put his Sights on Morrison. Greer came alongside Morrison on a fast fire road and put his wheelan the inside going up into an uphill turn. Once Greer took the lead, he turned up the throttle and finished the three-lap race with the overall and two minutes to spare. Edmondson found Morrison and made a pass to take second, Morrison came through the barrels in third. In the 200cc A class, KTM rider Ty Shipley sprinted to his bike to get the holeshot and then rode a flawless race. "I take my hat off to those AA guys: Shipley said..., rode my hardest on my home track and didn't catch them. It was a very demanding course, with no place to relax." G£,G/Castrol-sponsored Honda rider Josh Gray was last off of the start, but by the end of the first lap he had passed most of the class to find himself in third place. behind Cycle Connections-backed Kawasaki rider R.J. Ferguson. On the second lap, Ferguson fell off the pace, and Gray got around him. Gray kept second. coming in three minutes behind Shipley. FMF/Factory 909/Brewer Cycles-backed KTM rider Robby Norwood put in a consistent effort to grab third place. Motorcycles Costa Rica/Mark IV Yamaha rider Chuck Hancock grabbed his fourth straight holeshot in the 250cc A class. Hancock found himself in a bad line shortly after the start, and Triad Powersports-backed Suzuki rider Dean Ingram and Lewis Motorcycle Sports/Fly-sponsored KTM rider Brandon Nero passed him. Ingram led for a little while until he started feeling ill. Ingram overshot a turn, and Hancock and Nero passed him. Nero stayed on Hancock's back fender until he got crossed up in a rut. and Hancock pulled away to take the win with a two-minute lead over Nero, Ingram recovered and turned up the throttle to come in 15 seconds behind Nero. On the first lap of the Four-Stroke A class, Bryant Radio Supply-backed Yamaha rider Justin Stone and Yamaha rider Roland King battled back and forth for the lead. Stone got hung up in a couple of stumps. and the entire VET A: I. G1~nn Holcomb (KTM); 2. St~v~ Mason (Kaw); 3. David Baldwin (Hon); 4. Chuck Hon~ycuu (Yem); 5. Monti~ Orr (Yam). SR A: I. Canadian National Motocross Series Round 2: The Wastelands Another Perfect Weekend for Roy By AWSON KENNEDY NANAIMO, Be. CANADA, JUNE 22 Defending Canadian champ Jean·Sebastien Roy continued his domination at round two of the Canadian National Motocross Series in Nanaimo, British Columbia. After winning the first moto easily, Roy recovered from a dismal start and a fall early in mota two to work his way through the pack for the win. The Blackfoot Honda rider faced challenges from Blair Morgan Racing Yamaha's Craig Decker and Richmond Racing Kawasaki's Darcy Lange, who shared the podium in both motos. "The second moto was a little harder," Roy admitted, "but I am in such good shape that I came back. I feel faster than ever, more confident than ever. I started way back, and my mechanic put on the board. 'You can win, you can win.' I wasn't sure that I could catch up, but then the ram started pouring, and I started to focus on finding the good traction. The good thing with a 30·minute mota is that the training during the week pays off." Roy now leads the series by J 4 points over Decker. After a first-corner crash (which sent Team Faith rider Jimmy Gaddis to the hospitai), the first 250cc moto was red-flagged. Off the restart, Decker grabbed the holeshot, with Diablo Honda's Marco Dube in second place. Lange was third, and Roy was midpack. A first-lap crash cost Dube second, and Lange stole the lead from Decker. Roy worked his way and diced with Decker for second. Roy finally passed Decker and set his sights on Lange. The top three left the rest of the pack behind. Lange tried but failed to hold off Roy, and once out front. Roy rode smart, flying through the whoops and building a big lead. Decker began to pressure Lange for second. After a disappointing round-one ride, Lange was fighting hard to keep second, but with a few The Wastelands: Darcy Lange (20) leads Craig Decker (100) and Jean-Sebastien Roy (1) out of a corner at round two of the Canadian National Motocross Series in Nanaimo, British Columbia_ eye I e n eVIls JULY 23,2003 65
