laps left, Decker made the pass. Roy won. with Decker second and Lange third. Dube grabbed the second·moto holeshot, with Decker second. Lange was third out of the comer, leading Coors Light Suzuki's Der· rick Fisher. Roy started way back in the pack. Dube held off Decker for the first lap, as Lange started to gain on them. By the second lap. both Decker and Lange had passed Dube. Roy steadily worked his way through the pack. Despite a quick crash and a few bob· blest he managed to steadily make up time. By lap seven, Roy sat in third, behind Lange and Decker. Lange had his hands full trying to keep pace with Decker, and now Roy was on him. The rain started to pour as Roy reeled in and passed Lange, and one lap later he moved past Decker. Lange stuck with Decker, waiting for a chance to get by. With only two laps left, Decker stalled his bike heading into a corner, and Lange rode right by. Roy had opened up a big lead by the checkers. Roy took the win and the overall, with Lange second and Decker third. Blair Morgan, who shared the podium with Decker and Roy at round one, was injured in a crash in practice on Saturday. Morgan's throt- tle stuck on the finish-line jump, and he was c10theslined by the finish-line banner and crashed hard. Morgan was taken to the hospital with a serious leg injury and some damaged vertebrae. Richmond Racing Suzuki rider Evan Laughridge added two more 125cc Pro moto wins to his tally. Laughridge, who swept the opening round with 1-1 matos, gave a repeat performance in Nanaimo. Aside from a first~ moto challenge from Pacific Yamaha's Jimmy Nelson, Laughridge took the wins easily. Nelson grabbed the first·moto holeshot, but Laughridge took over on the first lap. Blackfoot's Tiger Lacey held on to third. Laughridge opened up a big lead by midmoto. Nelson dug deep and started to close the gap but crashed and didn't re-join the race. Lacey inherited second, but Laughridge was too far ahead by then. The best battle on the track was between 15~year-olds Colton Facciotti and Kyle Beaton. Facciotti held off Beaton for third. The rain tapered off as the second moto started, leaving the track muddy and slick. Washington state Yamaha rider Doni Wanat grabbed the holeshot. but Yamaha rider Tracy Johnson quickly took over. Laughridge started midpack but had the lead by lap three. Johnson held second for a few laps until Riverside Yamaha's Bart Stephenson passed him. Nel· son moved into third. Beaton worked his way into fourth, which, combined with his earlier fourth-place finish, was enough for third overall. Laughridge took the win, with Stephenson second and Nelson third. UT, JUNE 22 Good weather made round 10 of the Wild West Nationals the second consecutive day of great racing at Deseret Peak Complex. Gray Davenport was on a roll; he seemed to be Superman, and no one had any Kryptonite to stop him in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes. Davenport started things off by easily winning the first 250cc Pro moto. Josh Borges placed himself right between Davenport and the rest of the pack to take second. The racing was for third, between young David Panzer and crafty veteran Chad Wallwork. Wallwork got the start he needed, but Panzer was determined to keep pressuring Wallwork. Panzer finally got by Wallwork, but holding off Wall· work was going to be tough. Wallwork tried every move, every line, but Panzer was able to hold him off for third. Davenport once again grabbed the holeshot in mota two and was never challenged. Borges took a lap to get around the others, and he tried to reel in Davenport, but he was unable to make up any ground. In the battle for third, Wallwork again pulled a good start and was trying to hold on for third, but this time it was Korey Smith who was pressuring Wallwork, with Panzer on Smith's rear fender. Wallwork was able to hold off Smith, since Smith had more worries, from Panzer. Finally Panzer got on the inside of Smith on the step-up and got by on the sweeping corner. Wallwork managed to pull away slightly while Panzer was dueling with Smith. Wallwork was not going to be caught by Panzer in this moto, and he took third and third overall with his 4·3 finishes. Panzer (3·4) was fourth. Davenport was equally dominating in the 125cc Pro class, taking both moto wins, each by more than 10 seconds. In moto one, the racing was tight and well· fought. Panzer and Clint White fought it out on every jump and in every turn. Panzer was ahead, but White cut inside and took over second by the end of the first lap. Panzer moved to the inside, only to have the door shut by White. Panzer finally got by White with one lap to go. However, White would not give up, and he continued to challenge Panzer to the checkered Aag. The second mota again saw Davenport walking away with the win. Meanwhile, Panzer and White were going at it again. and another player. 125cc{A Intermediate rider Beni Williams· was dicing it out with them. With Panzer in front, White moved past Williams early in the mota and was looking to make a move on Panzer. The total distance between them was rarely more than four bikelengths as they fought for second. Williams passed both White and Panzer in a tall, bermed corner, but as they came out, both were able to get back past Williams. Time and time again, White tried to pass Panzer~ but Panzer would shut the door and White would have to protect his position against Williams; in the next comer, Williams would try to pass White, and White would close Williams out. On the final lap, with two corners to go, Williams got past White on a bermed comer and shot into third for the moto. Zane Trivett quickly grabbed the early lead in the 250cc Intermediate class, with Josh Kenley and Reed Tingey right behind him. Chad Jorgensen worked his way past Tingey and set his sights on Kenley. With Trivett looking comfortable in the lead, Kenley had to worry about Jorgensen's catching him. Jorgensen did catch up to Kenley, but he could never get around him. The second moto found Kenley leading and looking to run away with the win. Kenley slid out in the tall, bermed corner and had a hard time restarting his mount. Zane Trivett had been stuck in fourth, and he saw the other riders looking for a way around Kenley. Trivett found a faster way around Kenley and came through the corner right behind Tingey, who had inherited the lead. Trivett then got around Tingey in the sweeping corner and took the lead. Jorgensen was now pressing Tingey for third. Jorgensen made a spectacular midair pass as they flew over the huge tabletop with the white flag waving. 66 JULY 23.2003' cue I e n e VIr S Deseret Peak Complex Tooele, Utah Results, June 22, 2003 (Round 101 50 SHAfT: I. Western New York Motocross Association WNYMA New York State Challenge Series Rounds 11/1: Batavia Motocross Park Heaven Right Here on Dirt By LARRY WOOSTER Deseret Peak Complex: Gray Davenport (916) leads Chad Wallwork (22) and the rest of the 250cc Pros at round 10 of the Wild West Nationals in Tooele, Utah. Trivett took the win and the overall with a 1·1 tally. Jorgensen was second for the day with a 3-2 score, and Tingey scored third via 4·3 finishes. BATAVIA. NY. JUNE 22 The WNYMA's 11 th round was heaven for more than 360 motocross dirt devils at Batavia Motocross Park, as this was also the first round of the WNYMA New York State Challenge Series. Sweetening an already sweet deal are Challenge Series sponsors Scott USA, Dunlop Tires, No Fear MX, Maxi· ma Racing Oils, and Thor, and more sponsors are added weekly to generate the biggest motocross series in recent memory. There's no better facility at which to kick off the Chal· lenge Series than the WNYMA Track of the Year for both 200 I and 2002, Batavia Motocross Park. Mother Nature finally cooperated, allowing the "track attack staff" to have the track groomed to perfection, and for entertainment during intermission, the experimental class of "Fast 50s" would race a single moto to raise funds for injured WNYMA rider John Uplinger. Thirty-one ultrafast Mini Combined angels with attitudes were on cloud nine, with their throttles pinned and ready to rip it up at the drop of the gate. Chris Carlson won the drag race to tum one, while behind him a yard sale broke out, commanding a couple of riders' immediate attention, at least momentarily, Chad Dunning used the inside to stay out of trouble and power his way into the lead exiting turn one, and he then set sail through the whoops and over the big tabletop jump. Nicholas Basamania struck next. busting a sweet move to power his way over the whoops and past Carlson for a shot at the leader. Corey Shipos was next to challenge and pass Carlson, this time for the third spot, while Tyler Rayner, Sunny Drake and WNYMA Mini Combined Spring Series champion Louis Tepas all did some tank·slapping for fifth through seventh. Dunning and Basamania checked out in a two-bike breakaway and into whole new area code. Shipos settled down into the third spot, and Drake and Carlson rounded out the top five contenders. On the final lap, Dunning soloed at the checkers for the win, with Basamania trolling his way to the runner-up spot. Drake made a late pass for third place, leaving Shipos in fourth, Carlson in fifth, and Tepas in sixth. The anticipation for mota two was almost as high as the temperatures, with regular WNYMA season points on the line, as well as the extra bonus of separate Challenge Series points being dangled as bait. Zachariah Mauro had the total package working as he took the
