Results Black Saturday Chandler Mountain Motocross Park By BOB SCHUMACHER Meadows Mows 'em Down CEDAR RAPIDS. IA. JUNE 21 More than 340 entrants were spoiled with per· feet track conditions on the first day of summer. One of Hawkeye Downs' favorite riders, Todd Black, had a busy night, as usual. He runs the Open, Over 25 A and Over 30 A classes; he managed to pullout an impressive win in both the heat and mains of the Over 30 A class! At the drop of the gate for the Over 30 A contest, it was all Black. Jeff Neal followed, with Rick Munson in hot pursuit. Neal and Munson swapped positions a few times within the first lap. At the end of lap one, the order was Black, Neal. Rick Vanrheenen. Troy Bennett and Munson now in fifth. Black held his own all the way to the checkers, with Vanrhee· nen in second and Neal third. Munson got back by Bennett for fourth. In moto two, once again it was Black nailing the start. with Munson second and Neal third. Munson was aggressive early on, putting pressure on Black. On lap two. Black had a little breathing room, Munson was comfortable in second, and Vanrheenen was now in third, with Neal fourth and Robin Graham in fifth. Black's big thumper took the checkers first. with Munson keeping him honest in second, Vanrheenen third, Neal fourth and Graham in the fifth spot. In the 250cc A heat race, the steadily improving, Yamaha-mounted Derek Gibson got the holeshot, followed by KTM rider Kurt McCabe and Tamer Honda's Justin Brayton. McCabe took the lead through the whoops. By the end of lap one, Brayton made it past Gibson for second spot, and now he had his eye on McCabe. Brayton took the lead on lap two, which was really quite a feat, because McCabe was flat out hauling. The heat one victory went to Brayton, followed by McCabe. Greg Braet got past Gibson for third, and Eli Karns rounded out the top five. Karns rocketed out of the gate for the main-event holeshot. Nathan Kimball, who is making his presence known in the A class, was in second, followed by Austin Raubs in third. By lap three, though, things had heated up for Kimball, at the hands of Raubs. Braet and McCabe. Brayton moved out front. while Raubs made his way into second spot on lap four. McCabe sneaked into third, and Kimball was now in fourth. On the fifth lap, Braet passed Kimball, and now Raubs. McCabe and Braet were all vying for that second spot. nevws RMs, KTMs and YZs, except for one lonely 1978 YZ250. In the first moto. David Hulsey, on his 1978 YZ. came off the gate and ended up third among the group of newer machines. Hulsey held on to his good start for the first couple of laps before being overtaken by to< rider Roy Cooper, CRF -mounted Cherokee Callahan. and CR pilot Mark Callahan Jr. After moving on, Cooper and Cherokee battled for the win. When the moto finished. Cooper held on for the win, followed by Cherokee and then Mark, in third. Hulsey finished up in seventh a very impressive finish, considering the equipment he was riding. Moto two started with Hulsey pull1ng everyone to the first tum. Hulsey led the moto for the first two laps before starting to fade back. Mark moved around Hulsey to take the lead, followed by Cooper and CR-mounted Adam Martin. Mark was the man on the gas, and he took the win, leaving Cooper to pull up second and Martin with third. Hulsey ended up with a DNF due to some mechanical problems. The overall for the 250cc D class went to Cooper, with Mark taking second overall and Cherokee rounding out the podium in third. The 50cc (4-6) class is great to watch, as the parents race from one turn to the next. (Oh. wait, ifs supposed to be the kids who race ... ) It really is hard to tell sometimes who is putting in the harder laps, but in the end it's the kids who come out the winners. In mota one, Cobra·mounted Dalton Meadows showed why he is running the number·one plate on his bike. From the drop of the gate. Meadows was out front and running, followed by Payton Cooper and Christian Blakeney. The three riders finished the moto with Meadows in first, Payton in second and Blakeney in third. Moto two was more of the same: Meadows got out front and left the rest of the field in his dust. Meadows took the overall with 1-1 finishes. followed by Payton (2-2). Blakeney took the third podium spot with 3-3 finishes. By MAlTHEW HOLT STEELE, AL, JUNE 21 This was the second race for new track own· ers Allen and Jamie McWilliams and Bill DiGiorgio. and they pulled off another great day of racing. The track started out groomed and watered, and it showed all of the riders how a true outdoor National-style track devel· ops over the course of a race day. The loamyto·hard·packed soil carved up into lines, ruts and berms that made for excellent racing for riders from Beginners to Pros. Speaking of Beginners, the 250cc D class could only be described as an "odd mix." The riders lined up with the typical YZFs. CRFs, 50 OIUNJ: I. Mason Blakeney (Yam): 2. Clay O'Neill (Honl: 3. ALBUQUERQUE, NM, JUNE 21-22 Todd Costley brought out the big gun - his RI - for the June 21 make-up races for May. That was good enough for him to check out of the Open Superbike and Grandma's Music UnlimIted GP events. but not good enough for the Formula 1000 races the next day, as he crashed out and had to borrow a bike to continue the June series of races. Sunday's SMRI schedule started with Novice GTU and Ughtweight, and Alex Anastasiou stepped up his third-place perfor· mances from May to take first place in both
