Bersano, who runs the AA class in both the GNCC and AMA National Hare Scrambles series, did everything he could to stay ahead of Wegner's Yamaha. When the lead duo raced through the final grasstrack section on the last lap, there was less than a bikelength between them. Bersano squeaked through the scoring chute first for the win, only two seconds ahead of Wegner. in second. After some early complications, GaUt was able to sort things out. and he recovered to take third overall. Honda-mounted Travis Tudethout came through scoring next with fourth overall, and he was the last competitor on the lead lap. The top non-Expert rider came out of the 125cc class. as Honda-mounted Clint Sumner took the class victory, earning fifth overall for his efforts_ In the Four-Stroke class. it was Bersano's younger brother who stole the show. Brett Bersano was able to pilot his Suzuki DRZ to his first three-hour class victory, winning the Four-Stroke class and placing an impressive lOth overall in the process. Yamaha-mounted Nick Travis was able to navigate the rocky terrain well enough to earn second, with Mike Mason following in third on his Yamaha. Twin Bay Racing Sandia Motor Speedway: Having vowed to "beallhe girls," Daniel Franchini (163) did jusllhal, laking firsl place in the Open Beginner race in Albuquerque, New Mexico, ahead of Nicole Robran and Susan Van Disco. heats and all the way to the final, with Troy Runck taking second and Phil Brown scoring third in all races. Kevin Keay took the heats and the final in GTO, with Paul DeWitt taking second in all three races. The Formula 1000 contest proved to be one of the most exciting races of the day, as local favorite Keith Miller took the lead, and Costley charged up to challenge him. Miller barely held off Costley for several laps; then Costley pushed too hard in the double apex, tucked the front and slid off the track, giving Miller what was then an easy win. Brian Herndon rode alone to take second. Dave Dikatolia put his extensive track experience to work, keeping Dave Pillar from passing him, and Dikatolia took his second podium of the day. The Heavyweight Superbike race had the crowd screaming. Brad Tinker pulled into the iead as Costley tried to keep his wheelie off the line under control, starting on John Butterman's R6. Costley moved through the pack and passed Tinker midway through the race. Trying to keep pace with the leader, Tinker drifted into some oil on the high line of the banked oval and bounced over the edge of the track. Costley showboated to the finish, with Mike Shreve and Mike Applehans finishing second and third'. The Super Twins also featured some crash action. Jason Mathiason crashed on the same banked oval while in the lead. Sean McNew grabbed the lead on lap three and checked out, with Bruce Krummel and Steve Hurley following him on the podium. "Trash talking" set the stage for the Open Beginner race, with Daniel Franchini vowing to "beat the girls" and the four women starters commenting on Franchini's age. "Frenchie" made good on his promise and took first. Nicole Robran matched her May performance with another second. and Susan Van Disco rounded out the podium. The next races are on July 19 and 20. Rider schools are available, and new riders are encouraged to join. Check out www.smri·racing.org for more information regarding the growing sport of motorcycle road racing in New Mexico. JUNE 22 Butch "Fearless" Fetters continued his hot riding on the second day of the Pleasure Riders' doubleheader weekend, with much the same results: two class wins and the Fast Time award. He set the fast time again on his first ride in the 600cc class, blazing over the top of the 150-foot hill in 4.171 seconds on his KX500, taking the class win and Fast Time from Jared McKay, the 17-year-old "young gun" from Neoga, who had posted a time of 4.211 seconds on his Kawasaki. Fetters quickly returned in the 600cc class, where, riding his National Champion KTM 520. he posted a 4.468-second time for his 10th win in 11 events this year in that class. Will Dalenberg, riding a 450cc Honda, put decent pressure on him with a 4.513-secand run for second place. Mark "Murk" Schroeder also had back-toback double-win days on his YZ250. His first win came in the 250cc class, with a fine 4.283-second first-round time on his stocklength Yamaha. Class points leader Matt Peters nailed down second place with a 4.320· second run on his Honda, and 13-year-old John Michael Goeken took third. Schroeder has been nearly unbeatable this year in the 250cc class, when he rides - he has four wins and a second in the five climbs in which he's competed. Schroeder's second win came in the 400cc Stock class, where his first-round 4.436-sec· ond run was good enough to win. but Murk rode again anyway. beating his own time with an excellent 4.238-second run - one of the best of the day. Schroeder has three wins and two seconds in the five climbs he's ridden in this class. The young Gocken. on his Yamaha, was the next best in the class, with a 4.457second run. Jason Northrup appears to have all the bugs out of his Jeff Thomas-built 1220cc Yamaha, as he took the win in the Open class for the second straight day, with a 4.662-secand run. Harley riders Steve Shafer and Randy "Buzz" Green finished second and third. Green is still leading the class in points, but Northrup is coming on strong, and the class is getting tight; the rest of the year will be interesting. Results 50; 1. Dekote Blaken~ (Cob): 2.
