Pleasure Riders Hillclimb Fetters Fantastic at Nighttime Hillclimb By BUD NORTHRUP CAYUGA, IN, JUNE 2 i Some 145 riders competed at the Pleasure Riders' night hillcllmb on June 21. and Butch "Fearless" Fetters was arguably the best of the bunch. Fetters took two class wins and also the Fast Time trophy and the $100 that goes with it. Fetters' fast time came early in the first round of riding in the 600cc class, when he flew his KX500 up and over the top of the I 50-foot, three-stage hill in 4.194 seconds to take that class win and set a time no other rider would match all night. Fetters' closest competition came from Jon Creek, who stopped the clock in 4.260 seconds on his Honda. Creek has also been running strong this year and is currently in second place. behind Fetters. in the district points race. Third went to "Fast Andy" Fortner, who was barely off Creek's time with a 4.27 I-second run on his Honda. Fetters is the defending National Champion in the 600cc Four-Stroke class. and he has been nearly unbeatable in that class this year, carding nine wins in 10 events so far. On this evening, he flew his KTM 520 high over the top with a 4.449-second winning ride. Scott Pearson, riding a Honda CRF450R thumper. was second with a 4.534-second time, with Will Dalenberg, also Honda-mounted, taking third place. Mark Schroeder. the hillclimbing CPA from Danville. also had a double-win night. His first win came in the 250cc class, where he sailed his stock· length YZ250 over the top in 4.348 seconds on his first ride. Creek came close to catching him in the second round with a 4.365-second run on his RM250, and Malt Peters carded a 4.436·second time for third place on his CR250. Schroeder returned to ride the 400cc class on the same YZ250 and was even faster, stopping the clock in 4.291 seconds on his first ride. The next-closest time was posted by Schroeder on his second ride, with a 4.313second time· well ahead of second-placed rider John Michael Goeken. who topped out in 4.433 seconds on his Yamaha.
