Aaron Shaw was riding his YZ250 in sixth, and for· mer series contender Leigh Letellier was making a rare series appearance and running in seventh on his 125cc KTM. Less than two miles into the final lap, Thiele and Stone chose different lines exiting a creek crossing. Stone emerged with the lead, and now it was Thiele who was doing the chasing, With the win within his grasp. Stone turned up the heat and put in the fast lap of the day, a 25:51, to secure his third victory of the season. Not known as particularly fond of tight and technical trails, Stone may be changing his mind. "The last two races have been tighter than what I like. but I guess it's working for me," Stone admitted. Thiele hung tough and finished seven seconds down for runner-up honors· his fifth topthree finish of the year. Rounding out the podium was Wohletz, who put in a career-best performance. Nesbitt, who spent the iast three weeks fighting a virus, fought through fatigue to finish fourth. "I thought I'd be all right," Nesbitt lamented. "but I used a lot of energy trying to hang with Doug. and I was pretty much done after two laps. Maybe I'll be better next week." Leivan gutted it out for fifth. Shaw claimed sixth overall, while Mark Gay took another win in the A class on his Yamaha and snagged seventh overall in the process. Eighth went to expectant daddy Letellier. while two riders in need of confidence-boosting rides turned in season-best performances. Lebanon Husqvarna/Spud Shoes/Klotz/Smith rider Jon "Spud" Simons got off to a good start and ran at the front of the A class all day, eventually finishing second in class and ninth overall. Tenth overall went to Suzuki DR400-mounted Kevin Borts, who had a solid ride. Despite fighting a fading rear brake, Borts showed lIashes of his old self on the way to his best ride in quite some time. The Don· ne IlslD un lopIStoneworks Suspensi on/Scottbacked CR250 pilot established a lead early on but was forced to make a last·lap pass for the win after Chris Thiele emerged as Stone's toughest challenger midway through the twohour event. Slightly dry conditions were in store for the more than 200 competitors contesting the g-mile course. Several new technical sections were added to lower the speed from previous years, and the changes seemed to be welcomed by most of the racers. The wooded sections were in good shape. while the open portions provided some thick dust as an additional obstacle. Front·running riders completed five laps, with the winning speed clocked at 20.45 mph. Quick starter Stone set the pace from the beginning. with Team Green/Jones Powersports/Moose/Pro Circuit/M2R's Chris Nesbitt giving chase. Brandon Forrester and Thiele were in pursuit, and SCRtyamaha rider Steve Leivan had moved into fifth within a couple of miles after a poor start. Stone's pace was quick enough that he finished lap one with a 20-second lead over Nesbitt. Thiele was third at that point, 45 seconds off the pace. The top three were the same after two circuits, with Stone maintaining his cushion, although Thiele had reeled in Nesbitt. Caleb Wohletz had his Red Bull/Surdyke Motorsports/EVS/Axo/Sprocket Specialists-backed YZ250F on the gas and up to fourth place after a couple of early spills, while Leivan was still fifth on his Race Tech/Answer/Renthal/ Factory Effex/Clarke WR250F. Going into lap three, Nesbitt made an early gas stop and relinquished a position to Wohletz. Thiele had the bit between his teeth and caught Stone. When the race-long leader stopped for goggles with two laps remaining, Thiele snatched the lead on his J&W Cycles/ Motorcycle Stuff/Fly /Yoshimura/Tsubakisponsored Yamaha WR450F. Try as he might. Thiele had a tough time pulling away from Stone, and the two riders began the final lap with just seven seconds separating them. "I tried to do my thing and get away early on, but it didn't work," Stone said. "I was kind of alone for a couple of laps, so I was sur· prised when I heard Thiele coming." Thiele explained his take on things: "I ran him down, and I was hoping that I could get away, but I couldn't pull away, and he ran me back down." By the time the white flag came out, Wohletz had complete control of third, while Nesbitt was riding comfortably in fourth. Leivan was in "survival mode"; he had tweaked his back the previous day and was Bv Rov (/J w z Q o C2 > "' "' ~ :I: "- Brush Busters Hare Scrambles: Doug Stone busted through the Brush Busters Hare seven of the Missouri Championship Series, the brush to top Scrambles, round Hare Scrambles in Warrensburg_ JENKINS GONZALES, LA, JUNE 27 Although planned and promoted as a State Championship race, less than half of the state's racers showed up to contend for the bragging rights and 5-foot trophies. Rain had soaked the area the previous few days in one of the wettest Junes on record for Louisiana, but the track was in superb shape by race time. The night race had the feeling of a coun· ty fair. as fans and racers enjoyed one of the first clear nights in a week. Longtime motocross promoter and track owner Robbie Burgess put his experience to work on the track, redesigning it to make bigger jumps and realigning the straightaways to go parallel to one another. A new 75-foot tabletop was installed in the middle of the track, with a caution nagger's tower beside it. A serious double was also added in front of the tower; it was almost as long as the big tabletop but was more difficult because of the whoop section that preceded it. "You have to be straightened out when you come out of the whoops if you want to commit to clearing the double: said Burgess. "If you come out squirrelly, you just have to single it." observed Charlie Pausina, another longtime racer and track owner who won the Senior class. "II's especially difficult for the Minis." This was Mitch Gurney's first real race since breaking his back. He held off D.J. Cortez in the 85cc Open contest. They gave each other congratulatory handshakes at the checkered lIag. "He linjuredj five vertebrae [two were compressed fractures; three were hairline cracks on the wings]," said Mitch's father, Scott, of his son's injuries. "The day before Easter, he was riding his stock practice bike in Breaux Bridge, We were loading up, and he wanted a couple more laps. He was in third gear at half· throttle. He went to jump one of those little tabletops, When he compressed with a seat· cue e bounce, the rear shock blew. It's important to know that this was a stock shock. He recov· ered well, except for two ribs that were separated. His back never bothered him. We spent four days in Children's Hospital. They wanted him to take a wheelchair. but he just walked out. The doctors said if it didn't hurt, he didn't need to wear his back brace. As a former racer of 16 years, I know how this sport draws you. Mitch loves it. As long as he wants to do it. I'll support him." Ten riders showed up to contest the Pow· der Puff class. It was broken into big-bike and smail-bike classes. Staci Brown held off a determined Samantha Mouton in the big·bike class. Jenna Schillage continued her winning ways in the small·bike class. The previous week, she won the 85cc Beginner class against the boys. On this day, she crashed on the big tabletop but got right back up and continued. Jacob Heintze continues to morph into a Novice rider right before our very eyes. In the 85cc class, he finished right behind the steadily improving Stephen Williams. However, it was D.J. "Exploder" Cortez from Mandeville who continued to win on his Champion Cycle KTM. Polini rider Jon Murry Barr from Glen Allen, Mississippi, continues to blaze a trail to the NMA and AMA National Championships. He has already qualified for both Ponca and Loretta Lynn's. He won three classes on this night, in impressive fashion. Brandon Hubbard is trying to re-establish his winning ways after a long lay-off. Almost all the rust is gone since his successful comeback in Kentwood two weeks ago. Keep your calendars open for upcoming SRMA arenacross events. The next one will be held on July 26 and 27 at the James Lynn Multi·Purpose Arena in Hattiesburg, Mississip· pi, located one mile north of Highway 98 on 1-49. The following one will be at the Parker coliseum in Baton Rouge on the third weekend in September. ne""s JULY 23, 2003 69
