At Pine Ridge Raceway, located in the north woods of northeast Wisconsin. rain was all the track needed for a great day of racing. The weather in Athelstane has been very. very dry thus far this summer. Pine Ridge Raceway features a track nestled in a pine ravine with dark, sandy. loamy dirt throughout the entire course. Rain was needed, and rain is what they got: A light, steady rainfall kept the track in prime racing condi· tion throughout the day. Unfortunately. temperatures only reached a high of 54 degrees· pretty darn cold for the end of June, but then again. this is Wisconsin. More than 425 entrants were on hand for round five of the Northern Cup Motocross Series, and the points battles began to heat up. The 125cc A class is always a blast to watch at the fast, twisty, bowl·turn·infested raceway. Michigander Jesse Zambon is the man to beat at Pine Ridge. Zambon used strong starts to conquer the A classes on the day with not four but six moto wins, earning some cash to spend at the shop. Zambon won the I 25cc A, 250cc A and Sportsman A divi· sions with his flawless riding style. Zambon launched his Yamaha YZ250F off of the slippery. wet concrete starting pad ahead of local hotshoe (and newcomer to the A game) Jake LaCount. Pro-Action's Darby Fowler put his YZ into third after they rounded the first turn, with Motosports Factory rider (and somewhat of an old guy for the A class) Ken Masch. Early on, Masch made it past Fowler for third. and the battle for second was right around the corner. Zambon rode flawlessly for the first two laps. extending his lead to four seconds. Masch hung tough. riding right on LaCount's heels. LaCount really knows his way around the facility. as this is his family's track. LaCount kept Masch at bay for four laps, roosting his Smith goggles, until Masch couldn't take any more. LaCount leaped far into the downhill, but when he came into the corner, his front wheel stuck, leaving the window open for Masch to jump in for second. Masch then held off LaCount for the final lap to take second away from the newcomer and finish behind Zambon, who cruised to yet another victory at the Ridge. In moto two, Zambon once again grabbed the holes hot. LaCount bit the dust on the opening lap, ruining his chances for a top fin· ish; LaCount slid off the last double on the rhythm section. sending the Kawasaki rider to play in the sand - a tough break for a good rider who had a chance at a great finish. Zambon pulled away slightly, with Fowler In second and Danny Maki in third. Masch pulled his KTM around Maki's thumper on the second lap and was soon right behind Fowler. Zam· bon inched away for another moto win, while Masch moved into second, behind Zambon, who took the second-moto win and the over- Pine Ridge Raceway: Jesse Zambon (94) gets a good drive out of turn one with the holeshot in the 125cc A class. He won six motos on the day at round five of the Northern Cup Motocross Series in Athelstane, Wisconsin. 70 JULY 23,2003' cue e n e _ so all. Masch's 2·2 tallies garnered second, and Fowler went 4·3 for third overall. Chris Broderick was the first man to the first tum in the 250cc B contest, but unfortunately he laid it down for a soil sample, letting Jeremi Smith lead the 15·rider field. Michael Groleau moved into second, while Eric Derlein settled into third. Eric Peters was rising through the pack, and he eventually moved in right behind Derlein, but Derlein soon had trouble with his Suzuki; Derlein somehow broke the springs in his forks, and Peters swept by on the final lap for third. Meanwhile, Smith had checked out with a huge win on his Kawasaki. and he could smell the contingency money up for grabs. '" had a good holeshot, got around some guys and took the win," Smith said of his firstmoto win. Nathan Sprang sprung to the occasion in the second moto with an eye-popping holeshot on his CR250R. Sprang proved it was no fluke. as he led for the first lap, with Smith on his heels but with nowhere to pass. Cory Augustine sneaked into the third position, and Brian McCanna was fourth. McCanna motored by Augustine on the first lap. Smith finally sprang by Sprang by tripling in the rhythm section. taking over the lead and waving goodbye to the pack. Sprang was now being hounded by McCanna and Peters. McCanna got around Sprang but was soon passed by Peters for second. Smith checked out with another mota win, and Peters hung on to second and second overall with 3-2 scores. Michael Groleau rounded out the top three overall with 2·5 tally. Cedar Raceway Morast Carves Out Cedar Win By DICK GOODWIN CEDARClTY,UT, JUNE 14·15 Coming on late - and coming on strong - Josh Morast dominated moto two and took top honors in the 125cc Junior class at Cedar City, Utah. He utilized the same tactics to win the Open Junior division as well. In J 25cc action, Tyrel Brady kicked down the door to lead Brian Fowler and Benjamin Packer as race action began. Packer charged past Fowler and Brady to take over the lead. Morast was also on fire, fighting his way up into second. Packer and Morast were nose to tail. with Brady and Fowler right behind them. Mitchell Johnson was the "best of the rest." Morast hammered on Packer all race long, but Packer wouldn't crack, winning race one. Fowler fought past Brady to claim third. Brady repeated his first·race heroics to lead the pack as moto two cranked up. A huge pileup mandated a red flag and a restart. Brady conjured up magic for the third time in a row, leading Morast. Fowler and the pack on the restart. Morast made his move in the back section, slashing past for the lead. Fowler waited a little longer and then grabbed second on the west side. It was Morast's race to lose. however, and he was taking no chances, keeping the hammer down until he crossed the finish line with the win· and the overall 125cc Junior crown. Fowler's strong runner· up ride gave him second overall, leading Packer. Brady and Cody Larsen in the final results. In the Supermini class. second only to the I 25cc Juniors in the number of riders on the gate, Brandon Kealamakia rolled snake eyes to take the gold. Landon Powell ripped off the gate to lead Eric Barlow and the pack around the first turn. Kealamakia made his move to second on the back tabletop and turned a double-single into a big triple to wrest the lead away from Powell. Brodie Humphries was making waves, battling his way up into second by midrace. Late in the race, Blake Baggett came from out of nowhere to claim the runner·up position, but no one was catching Kealamakia. who cruised to the win. Zack Ahleen came up behind Baggett to nab third. Barlow shot off the gate to lead race two, but Kealamakia whistled by almost instantly. Cedar Raceway: Benjamin Packer (723) and Lynn Mortensen (85) lead the charge in the Open Junior class in Cedar City. Utah.
