AA rider Gary Johnston was 13th, and 14th was AA rider Glenn Myatt. Johnston, who held the SERA overall for three consecutive years (two of them perfect wins) between 1984 and 1986 had a great race on his Hattiesburg Cycles RM250. After a 13-year hiatus, Johnston (also known as "Brillo") finished the last three years with 20th-, eighth- and seventh-overall trophies. The 46-year-old says his goal is to finish in the top 10 one more year. SERA's overall B winner was Open B rider Jeff Parke, who also finished 23rd overall in SERA. The B 200cc winner, YZl25-mounted Mike Higuera. rode on row 00. That's a pretty impressive win, considering the tough, muddy, rocky and hilly terrain he had to navigate on such a small bike. "I found it hard to keep on the pipe sometimes," Higuera admitted, "but I love riding my 125." Coming in second in the B 200cc class was Will McConnell, who barely beat fellow KTM rider Kyser Smith on the tie breaker. SERA's Vet B winner was KTM-mounted Lance Dillon. In only his second year of racing, Dillon had a five-point lead over secondplaced Mark Johnson, on a KTM. The Super Senior A winner was Barry Bell, who was SERA's second-overall champ in 1985 and has just returned to the sport this past year and is already breaking into SERA's top 20. In the Junior 100cc class, SERA reigned again, with Honda rider Russ Lewis taking first. The very impressive Lewis was also the only Junior IOOcc rider to finish the race. In the Junior Open class, there were three who finished; the top two were SERA riders Robert Singley, on a Gas Gas, and Jeremy Womble, on a Yamaha. These are some tough young riders! . Clanton Track and Trails did a great job, considering the weather, and the efforts of all were much appreciated. It was a great race and a great Memorial Day Weekend! Now it's time to scrub off that muddy bike and gear and get ready for the next run. Clanton Track and Trail Clanton. Alabama Results, May 25. 2003 (Rounds 5/13) O/A: t. Russell Bobbitt (GO): 2. Wild West Nationals Round 6: Owyhee Motorcycle Clubgrounds Seibler, Weimer: "Young Guns II" By DAVE ROONSEVElLE BOISE, ID, MAY 25 Cole Seibler and Jake Weimer showed up at OMC with something to prove. Both have won National Championships. and they came to show the speed that it takes to win a National. Both are racers to watch in the future. With Seibier running in the I 25cc and 250cc Pro classes and Weimer running in the 125cc Pro/Am class. race fans were treated to the sight of two National riders duking it out on a National-level track. Seibler started off with the lead in the I 25cc Pro class; Weimer was in the lead pack, in fourth. With clear track in front of him, Seibler was able to carve out a five-second lead, while Weimer was slicing through the pack. Once Weimer cleared the rest of the pack, he set his sights on Seibler, but Seibler had already developed a sizable lead. Weimer posted some laps faster than Seibler's, but in the end that was not enough, and Seibler cruised to the win. The second moto started off with Ryan Picard nailing the holeshot. Weimer was fur· ther back in the pack. Seibler quickly got past Picard and simply started to run away. Weimer was cutting through the pack with relatively little trouble, while Seibler kept up his speedy pace and put time on the lead pack. Time ran out for young Weimer, and he was unable to catch early leader Picard and had to settle for third in the Pro class and first in his Prol Am class. Seibler smoked the holeshot in the 250cc Pro class and completely dominated the first moto. Some good racing was still going on behind him. though, as another rising stal. Levi Jensen, was riding as a Pro/Am and battling with crafty veteran Kip Posey. Jensen and Posey battled for most of the moto until Posey made a strong pass in the sandwash area. Though Jensen would later go down hard, he showed that he can run with the big dogs, too. Posey set his sights on Pete Roberts and was gaining some ground, but Posey ran out of time and finished third as the checkered nag new. Posey grabbed the lead in the second moto. Seibler made a mistake in the second tum and came out at the tail end of the pack. No worries, though: By the fourth lap, Seibler had passed the leader, Roberts, in the whoops and was now in the lead. Posey was once again on the move, and he was able to get by Roberts and finish second for the mota and second on the day. Roberts got third overall. Rudy Hansen gained the early lead over Josh Kenley in the 250cc Junior class. Jeremy Crandall stayed close. Kenley was able to pass in the infield section of the track and hold off Hansen for the win, while the rest of the field was slightly behind the two leaders but tightly bunched together. The second moto appeared to be a repeat of the first. with Hansen taking the lead. only 60 OPEN: I. Tllylor Mclruw (KTM); 2. Rocky ~ (KTM); 3. to be passed at the same spot as in the prior mota. However, Hansen had other plans. and he got by Kenley to take the win and the overall on the day, with Kenley second and Crandall third. "If I could just get a good start, I know I could run with the leaders," said 125cc Intermediate rider Beni Williams. Well. he proved he was telling the truth, as he took the holeshot and, though he was challenged early by Kyle Kubitschek, pulled away to take the win. Daniel Johnson was running strong but couldn't make up any time on Williams. Johnson settled for second, with Kody Bill staying close for a solid third. Josh Clifton pulled a holeshot and led for the first lap of moto two. with T.J. Karren and Joel Barnowski on his heels. Barnowski was able to get by both Clifton and Karren and take the lead, while Johnson was trying to close in. Barnowski held off Johnson and took the moto win, while Johnson settled for second. Bill rode again for a solid third, and Wiiliams was fourth. Johnson (2,2) took the overall win, Williams (1-4) was second, Bill (3-3) was third, and Bamowski (9-1) was fourth. Iverson moved into second with a fine ride, getting past Sokolik. Matt Menzer took fourth, and Jacob Greatens took fifth. It was all Holzhauer in the second mota, as he took the win and the overall. Iverson had a great day in the runner-up position with 2-2 tallies, and Matt Menzer went 4-3 for third. Even more impressive was the fact that Holzhauer was on a Suzuki RM85, competing against the larger-displacement bikes in this division, which is filled with 125cc machines. Holzhauer had a fantastic afternoon, taking five wins out of six motos. He also won the Mini Senior and I 25cc B events. The Masters (Over 25) class had 25 riders lined up at the gate, and when it fell. the fourstroke power of Dale Neubauer's Yamaha jumped him out to the lead, ahead of Ken Masch. who started on the far inside but sneaked to the inside for the second spot. Masch took over the lead before they headed into the valley, where hundreds of spectators lined the fence. Masch was riding a KTM 125 against some big-bores on the horsepower track. Masch used his speed and experience, knifing his way through the track for the firstmoto win. Neubauer hung tough the whole mota, never losing sight of Masch and hts orange machine. "I got a second-place start. behind Dale Neubauer," said Masch, "and there was a pretty big triple in back that he wasn't doing and I was, and that's how I moved up into the lead. I pushed really hard in the lead, and Dale was still there, but i"1l take any lead i can get to win." Masch had taken several years off from motocross due to a foot injury, but he seems to be on the right track with a comeback win like this one, especially on a 125. David Rock and Neubauer battied for the lead in the second moto, and Josh Brehm got into the mix. Masch got a mediocre start this time, getting pinched off by the time they hit the brakes in the first turn. Rock was solid all moto, taking the win, but he had to settle for By PETE EMME ATHELSTANE. WI. MAY 25 Some 560 riders stormed the picturesque northern woods of Pine Ridge Raceway in Athelstane, Wisconsin, for round two of the Northern Cup Motocross Series. Classes were loaded with talent. The LaCount family pro· vides one of the finest racing facilities in the Midwest. The track features loamy, dark sand with natural hills and manmade jumps that roll in and out of a pine forest. The track is topnotch, and the campgrounds can't be beat. Suzuki jockey Jaren Jonas took the holeshot in the first 250cc B mota, with Jeremi Smith in second. Alan Haney and Cory Smidel battled it out for third as they headed toward the back section of the track. Smith passed Jonas for the lead going into the val· ley. with Haney not too far behind. Haney bobbled after the first lap, and Smidel moved past for third. Thirty-something Eric Derlein was moving through the field, and he took third on the final lap. Smith checked out with the win on his Kawasaki. Jonas was runnerup, and Derlein, Smidel and Haney rounded out the top five_ Derlein ripped off the concrete launch pad with a nice holeshot in the second moto, ahead of Jonas and Smidel. Derlein pushed it hard for the first two laps but succumbed to the pressure from Jonas on the final lap. Jonas won the second moto, giving him the overall. After starting seventh, Smith worked his way up to third, and his 1-3 tally garnered second overall. Smidel rode a consistent mota for the runner-up spot and third overall. "Bad Billy" Holzhauer started on the far inside gate, and when it dropped, there were 19 125cc Junior riders screaming across the grass start and into the first corner. Holzhauer outbraked every 12- to 15-year-old to get into the lead. with Cody Sokolik in tow. Holzhauer roosted through the sand and out to a fivebikelength lead. Sokolik checked up a little in the rhythm section, giving Holzhauer a larger lead. While Sokolik had trouble through that section, Cory Iverson had his KTM right on the rear fender of Sokolik's Suzuki. It wasn't long II: U II: e n e vv s JUNE 25, 2003 79
