CMRA Championship Series Round 4: Hallett Motor Speedway Prussiano, Rushin' to Take Honda Cash By SHAN MOORE HALLETT, OK, MAY 25 Houston's Joe Prussiano came to Hallett Motor Speedway looking to cash in on Honda contingency money. When "Joe P." left, he was $3350 richer, thanks to fellow Houstonite Jody Hudson, who supplied him with a very potent Honda CBR954RR. Half of the hired gun's booty was taken in an impressive comefrom-behind win in the Unlimited Supersport Expert race. At the start of the Unlimited Supersport race, pole sitter Michael Sanchez led the pack through tum one. Prussiano, who was gridded on the fifth row, stuffed it hard into turn one in an attempt to make up for a bad start. "We'd been havin' a problem gettin' it to launch," said Prussiano of the start. "We did a practice launch on Pit Road, and it did perfect, but when we got on the track for the start, it just bogged real bad, and I almost killed it. I pulled the clutch, and it bogged again. I saw some of the second wave comin' by me, so I just ran it into the first turn really hard and took my chances." Prussiano picked off three riders in turn one with the move. 80 JUNE 25, 2003' cue e "I made an extra downshift so I could park it and turn," he added. "Gain' into Iturn!two, I just got way to the inside and ran it up in there like an idiot." Prussiano entered turn two all locked up, buckin' and squeelin' his way past two and three riders at a time. Miraculously, he exited turn two without a mishap and five places better than when he entered. By turn five, he had worked himself into third, behind Marcus McBain, and was trying to make a move. By turn seven, the order was Sanchez, McBain and Prussiano, in tight formation. John Ross, Keith Holleman, Jeremy Keller, Ty Stranger-Thorsen, Sha Edwards, John Orchard and Eric Fait followed in another pack a short way behind. Heath Small, who survived a high-speed crash in practice to make the grid, was inllth. Bret Champagne, who started from the seventh row, was outside of the top 15 but on the move. Prussiano put the Honda under McBain in the final turn of the 10-turn course to start lap two in the second position. Prussiano was breathing down Sanchez's neck when they exited the final turn of lap two, and he put a big move on Sanchez, going under the Suzuki rider in turn one, a fast left-hander, to take the n e vv s Hallett Motor Speedway: Joe Prussiano left Hallett, Oklahoma, more than a little richer than when he arrived after taking the Unlimited Supersport Expert win - and some Honda contingency money - at the fourth round of the CMRA Championship Series. lead going into lap three. Champagne moved around McBain to take control of third. At the end of lap three. the order was Prussiano, Sanchez, Champagne, McBain and Holleman. Keller, Stranger-Thorsen, Orchard, Ronnie Lunsford and Small rounded out the top 10. By the halfway mark, Prussiano had gapped Sanchez by two seconds, turning a scorching 1:18.73 in the process, just .21 seconds off of Sam McDonald's 200 I track record. Champgne followed six seconds back. The final four laps were relatively unevent· ful, and at the checkers it was Prussia no, Sanchez, Champagne, Stranger· Thorsen, Holleman and Small. "The PireJlis were great," said Prussiano after the event. "We got the soft stuff on today. I want to thank Jody Hudson, Vinyl Edge Graf· fix, Pirelli, EBC and Northwest Honda for their help." Prussiano returned later in the day on Hudson's Honda to take the Unlimited Grand Prix Expert win, as well. Hallett Motor Speedway Hallett. Amateur Spring National Starwest Cycle Park Paluzzi Puts It Together By MIKE AND BARBARA PALUZZI MORENO VALLEY, CA, MAY 25 Starwest's inaugural Amateur Spring National was a huge success for Daniel Paluzzi, who put together two perfect motos to take the overall win in the 50cc (7-8) class. More than 400 riders showed up for this special race on Memorial Day Weekend, and the 50cc class was one of the biggest classes of the event. In the first mota, Paluzzi pulled the holeshot, followed by Austin Aguilar and Trent Frank. Paluzzi, no stranger to the track, was in control, and he was able to perform some incredible jumps. Aguilar managed to keep Paluzzi in sight, and Frank tried desperately to hold on to the third-place position, while Darrel White was closing in. The white flag waved, signaling one lap left for Paluzzi, while Aguilar was comfortable in second and Frank and White battied for third. White applied the pressure down the back section and through the whoops. Finally, White made his move, passing Frank before the checkered flag flew. Paluzzi took the win, foilowed by AgUilar and White. ' In the second moto. Paluzzi again took his Cobra to the front of the pack, while Aguilar was close behind. Paluzzi set the pace. Aguilar quickly had trouble, as White was closing in. After getting a bad start, White displayed speed and skill, and he was able to make the pass on Aguilar to take over second. Paluzzi took the checkered flag, foilowed by White and Aguilar. Jose Ceja was unstoppable in the 50cc (4-6) class, taking two mota wins, with Blake Green foilowing closely.
