Oklahoma State Championship Series Round B: Ponca City Teasley's Tenacity Pays Off By CONNIE JOHNSON PONCA CITY, OK, MAY 25 The eighth and final round of the Oklahoma State Championship Series was run on a beautifully prepped Ponca City track, with sunny skies and mild temperatures. Racers from across the country showed up just to get in some practice on the track before the NMA Championship in August. Garrett Teasley rode his Suzuki to 1·1 finishes for first overall, making that his second 125cc Novice win in this series· not quite good enough for the championship win, but he's obviously improving rapidly, and he still takes home a secondplace trophy in the series. Moto one of the 125cc Novice class launched off the gate, and Alex Agler got the jump on everyone else with his Kawasaki. Agler held off Teasley for one lap, but by the first tum past the finish-line area, Teasley had made the pass and pulled away. Elbert Simon charged up from a fifth-place start to finish second on a Yamaha, while another blue rider, Jason Brunk, held on to third after Simon got by him. Jacob Leatherwood moved his Yamaha up from sixth to fourth by the time the checkers came out, relegating the Hondamounted Tanner Moore to fifth. Agler dropped to sixth. Mota two was all Teasley's. After getting the holeshot, he sailed to the checkers with ease. Brunk finished one spot better, passing Suzuki rider Trae Norton for second. KTM rider Justin Whaler also had a better mota, moving up from a 13th-place finish in the first mota to fourth in moto two, behind Norton. Leatherwood rounded out the top five. Simon, who finished eighth in moto two, got fifth overall, which garnered him enough points to take the series championship win in the class. Asa Phillips claimed holeshot honors on his Honda in mota one of the Open Outlaw class. He was quickly dispatched by Honda rider Ben Schrik and Yamaha-mounted Mark Blackwell. KTM rider Riece Robertson challenged Blackwell, passing him and staying in front of him for two laps, but when the check· ers came out, it was Schrik, Blackwell, Robertson, Yamaha rider Jerad DeArmon and KTM rider Ryan Voit. In moto two, there was a bar-to-bar race going into the first turn, between Schrik and DeArmon. They were so intent on battling each other that Blackwell got around them both and led the way home. Schrik crashed and ended up finishing 12th, leaving DeArmon to finish second, followed by Norton, Yamaha rider Simon, and Robertson. DeArmon, with his second place overall, claimed the championship title. The 250cc Expert class was dominated by Yamaha pilot Johnny Marley. Young up-andcomer Robbie Smith gave him a run for his money, but he couldn't beat the fiying Marley. Smith got the holeshot in mota one on his Yamaha and tried to hold Marley off, but to no avail. Lap after lap it was Marley, Smith, and Honda riders Ryan Green and Michael Coday. By the time the checkers came out, KTM rider Derek Kemp had moved up from last to fifth. Marley got the jump in moto two, but some mistakes dropped him back to third, behind Smith and Coday. Four laps later, Marley was again in the lead, with Smith, Green, Coday and Kemp playing follow-the-Ieader. Marley also claimed the series championship title in the 250cc Expert class. Another great year of racing is in the books for the Oklahoma State Championship Series. An awards ceremony will be held at the end of June to honor those who managed to stay healthy enough and fast enough to claim an overall championship. and for the top seven behind them. Everyone who competed, worked or participated in one way or another made it quite a successful year! Ponca City Ponca City. Oklahoma Results: May 25, 2003 (Round 8 of 8) 50 (4-6): I. Southern Enduro Riders Association Series Southeastern Enduro & Trail Riders Association Series Rounds 5/13: Hillbilly Classic Enduro Bobbitt Steals the Hillbilly Classic By CHARAY DuBOSE AND CAROLYN REED CLANTON, AL, MAY 25 More than whiskey was brewin' in them thar hills when SETRA rider Russell Bobbitt rode his Gas Gas to the overall win in Clanton, Alabama, at the co-sanctioned Hillbilly Classic Enduro. Clanton Track and Trail hosted the event, and the fast boys of SETRA met up with the fast boys of SERA to compete against not only riders of their own organizations but against each other. It proved to be some pretty stiff competition. The 17-year-old tied with SERA champ 'Stephen Reed and won by 60 seconds when it came to the tie breakers. "I enjoyed the race today," said the Suzuki-mounted Reed, who is racing both SERA and SETRA this year, "and I really like SETRA's tough competition to ride against. Bobbitt sure is showing great speed this year." Clanton received 16 inches of rain prior to the race, resulting in heavily wallowed-out mudholes and two thigh-deep creek crossings that forced many riders to walk their bikes across while assisted by club members. Some had to be patient and wait, since the lines had already been established, and the wet ground didn't allow for new trail-making. "I've been racing Clanton trails for a long time," Senior A rider Robert Cowles said, "and this was by far the toughest race they have ever had." SEE.TRA rider Bobbitt snared the overall win, but SERA riders held the next five places: AA riders Reed, Clay Boreing, Nolan Knight and Carsten Cagle, and Vet A rider Daren Pittman. KTM-mounted Boreing celme in third, just one minute behind Reed, after getting caught up behind slower traffic. "The trails were pretty tight," Boreing said, "and you just had to wait your turn or risk making a new line and getting stuck." Then came Kawasaki jockeys Knight and Cagle with tying scores; Knight won on tie breakers. Knight said he had a great race but thought it was a little short (though some would disagree). Honda CR250-mounted Pittman came in sixth overall and captured the overall A trophy with a very impressive score, dropping just five more points than Cagle. The 37-year-old Pittman has only been racing enduros for about a year and a half, and he's definitely proving he has what it takes to hang with the faster crowd. SERA racers filled the 10th through 14th spots. Tie-breaker points would separate the last four only. Coming in 10th was AA rider Chris McMillan, 11 th was A 200cc rider Taylor Reynolds, 12th was Open A rider Frank Davis, o w w a: z - ~ a: " () ~ ~ 0.
