CA, MAY 23 Four-time California Speedway Champion "F1yin' Mike" Faria did the nearly unthinkable at week three of the young Fast Fridays Speedway season: Not only did he qualify and transfer to the Scratch main event, he drew the coveted inside pole starting spot for the third consecutive week and then topped that off with his second straight victory. "Hey, sometimes the luck goes my way," Faria laughed after the event as he struggled to get out of the top half of his sweat-soaked racing suit. "And believe me, drawing the pole three times in a row has happened before; of course, I can't remember when. but I'll take it." Joining Faria in the Scratch mllin for the third consecutive week were former Auburn track champions Bart Bast and Bobby "The Blaze" Hedden, who were in starting lanes three and four, respectively. Charlie "The Edge" Venegas was in lane two. After a clean, even start, Faria and Hedden arrived at the first turn at the same time, slightly ahead of Venegas. who may still be showing the effects of last year's broken leg, and Bast, whose lane·three starting draw left him with little traction on the blue groove. Faria's inside advantage held up down the back straight, and aside from Venegas' highside get·off in the first turns of lap three, the rest of the race was predictable. Hedden fin· ished second, and Bast was third, behind Faria's Kassman Racing/Arai/Oilzall GM. Faria was not the only repeat Division One victor. So Cal transplant Jim Estes, who moved to Carson City, Nevada, over the win· ter with the intention of riding every week in Auburn. prevailed in the Handicap main. ahead of Bast. Faria and Matt Brown. In the Division One Youth finale, current and two-time Junior Champion T.J. Fowler and his chief rival, Danny Easley, once again brought the sellout crowd to its feet with another chapter of their intense, personal rivalry, which featured a full restart after Fowler ran into the back of Easley on lap two. Paul Johnson's impressive lay-down behind the two called for a total restart. which Easley won after passing early leader J.T. Mabry and then holding off Mabry and Fowler on the final lap. J,D. Ricketts prevailed in the Division Two Youth main. ahead of Mitchell Johnson. and Tori Hubbard passed Cody Ciciarelli to capture the Division Three main. Week three also marked the return of the Speedway Sidecars to the Gold Country Fairgrounds. Mechanical failures reduced the Sidecar main event into a match race between the teams of Joe Jones & Brandi McElroy and Mike Fontaine & Scott McElroy. The Jones/McElroy team prevailed on the final lap after an impressive inside pass left the Fontaine/McElroy Kawasaki in the dust. In third-division action, Auburn's own Bruce Bast beat Guy Jessop to the checkered In the 80cc Beginner division, Friday's son Sean also put in a solid performance. At the front of the pack all day was Yamaha·mount· ed Caden Probst, who took the overall win with a fine pair of mota wins. Probst got both holeshots and led the entire distance in each race with an impressive performance for the day. Sean showed the value of a consistent effort, and he was rewarded with second over· all for his 3·2 finishes. Brandon Peterson put up two fifth-place finishes on the board, and that was good for third place overall. A strong second mota garnered Honda rider Nathan Wagner the fourth-place brass with an 8-3 tally for the day, while Zack Linden (7-6) took fifth. Results Glen Helen Raceway Park Who's the Man? Friday! By ROCKY HASH SAN BERNARDINO. CA.. MAY 24 Excellent prep work on the racetrack and hard work throughout the day by the Racing Enterprises Molorsports crew kept the course in top-notch condition as temperatures crept near the century mark. which taxed the track and riders alike. In the Over 40 Intermediate class. Yamaha YZ250-mounted Thad Friday prevailed, though he had to work hard both times out. In the first mota, fonner Yamaha support rider Peter Wanket took the win after having to charge hard all moto after an extremely poor start. Friday gated well and heid the point position until the very last lap. With less than half a lap to go, Wanket finally edged by Friday and then held the lead to the checkered flag for the win. Friday rolled in a close second, while Kawasaki KX250-mounted Tony Sulli claimed third. Tim Murphy was fourth aboard his CR250. while YZ450F-mounted Gary Harada took fifth. In moto two, Friday shot out front with a nice holeshot and appeared determined as he set a blistering pace oul front. By lap three, Friday enjoyed a four-second lead over Honda CRF450R rider Gary Scott. Once again, Wankel was mired back in the pack after a bad start. but he continued charging hard. By the halfway point, Wanket was up to third, right behind Sulli's green bike. Meanwhile. out front, Friday wasn't letting up, and he continued on without a mistake. Late in the race, Wanket cut into Friday's lead, and it looked like he might be setting up some more last-lap heroics, but when the checkered flag flew, he came up about three bikelengths short and was forced to settle for second place. Third through fifth was a repeat of the first race, as Sulli, Murphy and Harada came across the line in that order. On the day. the class win went to Friday by virtue of his second·moto triumph and 2-1 overall score. Wanket (1-2) was next best, while Sulli (3-3) finished up in third. Murphy (4-4) was fourth, and Harada (5-5) was fifth. 65 BEG: 1. DIllllls Leedom (KlIw); 2. la<:hlIry Pillow (KlI...). 80 BEG: I. ClIden Probst (Yl:m): 2. Sean Fridlly (Yllm); 3. It's a true motocross family that can use their other track when one is flooded: the Kellys did it again! Track conditions were per· feet by race time. and the track even had to be watered a bit. This night had some of the closest racing ever in the 85cc (12-15) and Supermini 80105cc events.
