Rovers Me Boner Run Desert Scrambles: Mike Childress placed first in the Open Expert
division and first overall at round seven of District 37's Desert Championship Series
in Lucerne Valley, California.
Hengeveld jumped back on his American
Honda and discovered he had a nasty hole in
the radiator, so he called it a day. Childress
took the overall finish aboard his Team
Green/Goat/Winners Edge Kawasaki and finished four or five minutes ahead of overall
runner-up Chris Blais, who was totally stoked
with his second-overall finish and first place in
the Four-Stroke Expert division on his BlaisRacing.com/Pro Honda Oils-backed XR650.
"I'm always finishing third, fourth or fifth overall, SO it feels great to get second," Blais said.
Blais found himself mixing it up with the
second-placed Four-Stroke finisher, Allan
Laframboise, and the second-placed Open
Expert finisher, Joe Pettigrew.
"Pettigrew was running third overall,
behind Hengeveld and Childress," recounted
Blais. "I got by Laframboise right after the
start and caught Pettigrew in the fast valley
section on the first lap."
After a bad start, Brian Melsheimer recovered quite nicely and took the checkers first in
the Four-Stroke Amateur division aboard his
Temecula Motorsports Honda.
The big battles of the day were raging in
the older classes. Doug Phelan piloted his
ESR/MotoFab Yamaha to the top-dog position
in the Senior 250cc Amateur class.
"Craig Cannon had me on the start," said
Phelan. '" got by him and never saw anyone in
my class. I was dicing with my fellow club
member Brett Huntzinger. but this was an
Open-bike course. and my 250 had just a bit
more power than his KTM 200. I had the 250
pinned the entire time."
"Dangerous Dave" Springer also found himself dicing it out with a fellow club member.
Springer won the Magnum Open Amateur class
aboard his Cycle Gear/Z Racing KTM, but he
had Senior 250cc Amateur rider Mike Hastings
nipping at his rear fender the entire second loop.
"Overall, this was a great course," Springer
said. "By the time you got tired of the technical stuff. they dropped you in a fast valley so
you could get a break. For a guy over 50, I
need that break once in a whjle. It was a great
race, but it would have been even better if I
had beat Hastings!"
