points, with Beck taking second, Panzer third and Butterfield fourth overall. This race could be an indication that the scores could change easily from race to race, and this should make for some exciting battles all season. Eric Barlow pulled the holeshot and started to run away with the Supermini class. Barlow had a good lead. while Braden Butterfield and Nick Nelson were trying to hold off a speedy Dacoda Sorochuk, who kept the speed up and got past both Braden and Nelson by the time the white flag flew. Sorochuk now had his sights set on Barlow, and he steadily gained ground. Sorochuk was able to catch Barlow in the infield section and make a clean pass to take the first-mota win. Barlow again managed to grab the holeshot and again looked ready to run away with the win in the second mota, but he overshot a berm, and Nelson was there to take the lead· which he would never relinquish. Firstmota winner Sorochuk had a mechanical problem and was not a factor. Nelson took the overall, with Barlow second and a consistent Chase Hunt third. Kip Posey showed that he was not to be taken lightiy, as he won the 250cc, Open and Over 25 Pro classes - though not without a fight. Posey fell at the start of the Over 25 Pro class; he got up and picked up his bike. but the rest of the riders were almost around the second jump and heading over the tunnel jump by the time he got his levers straightened and his 450cc Honda heading out. Posey surprised the crowd - and most of the class by not only catching up to the class but passing all of them except the leader by the end of the first lap! The leader, Josh Borges, had already been battling Posey for most of the day, in the Open and 250cc Pro classes, and now it looked as if Borges had the upper hand, in the form of a five-second lead. However, Posey steadily chipped away at Borges' lead, and on the last lap he was closing even faster. Posey was able to pass Borges and take the first-moto win. Borges took the second-moto holeshot and started to pull a lead over Posey. Borges and Posey are very close in abilities and lap times, aithough they are opposites in style and technique: the slicing, sliding, high-revving twostroke riding of Borges vs. the smooth-flowing, seemingly effortless four-stroke riding of Posey. The win went to the smooth one in this race, as Posey took the overall, with Borges second. Ogden Cycle Association Ogden, Utah Results: April 19, 2003 (Round 6) 50 SHAFT: I. Michigan Spring Fling Dutch Sport Park Youth Runs Wild in Bloomingdale! By BART NEWMAN BLOOMINGDALE, MI, APR. 13 Great weather, a fabulous track, an upcoming Loretta Lynn's Youth Regional, plus factory contingencies from Kawasaki, Suzuki and Honda made for a Youth crowd that was second to none. Out on the big track, Matt Adrian, Michael Chapman, Kyle Regal and Brett Wagner all took wins in their respective class· es, while over on the small track, Cody Price won two classes, and Kyler Gimenez and Jared Bennett each grabbed a chunk of gold before the day was done as well. Adrian set a blistering pace in the 65cc class that not one of the 76 other 65cc com· batants could match, taking the day's overall with an impressive high-speed run that turned into a double-mota overall win. Regal was on the gas, but Adrian had the starts to put himself out front early, leaving Regal in second. Regal still goes mighty fast on the 65cc bikes, but his speed on the bigger bikes may have hurt him a little on the small machines. James Roberts unleashed his high-flying aerial antics at Dutch, bringing home a hard-earned third after riding tough all day long. Regal backed up his runner-up finish in the 65cc class by running away and hiding from the field in the 85cc Junjor class, laying down some great laps on the very rough and demanding Dutch Sport Park track. There was a battle royal in both motos for second between Adrian and Chance Dell. It took two motos, but Dell hung tough to lock up the middie row of the podium after pressuring Adrian throughout the second mota until a miscue ended Adrian's run at second. Dell and Adrian's battle had opened up a lead that nobody could close, and Adrian recovered in time to hold on to third overall. When the 85cc Senior class left the track for the final time of the day, it was Chapman on top of the heap. Chapman is not the flashiest rider on the track, and sometimes not even the fastest, but mota after mota and year after year, this kid is at or near the front of the pack. Fluid riding plus brains are Chapman's strengths, and he bests the other riders in his class regularly with these talents, often generating top finishes. Wagner and Alex Hotchkiss went to war in both motos, and it all came to a head in mota two, as they were elbow to elbow throughout the moto. Wagner got the nod and sealed up the runnerup position, while Hotchkiss was third. Wagner bettered his finishing position by one in the 85cc (9-13) class, taking the class win over Kris Miller. This is Michigan's new "hit" 85cc class, as more than 25 riders lined up on the gate for each moto. Miller made the trek from the east side worthwhile, getting in some laps on the track that will host the Midwest Youth Regional and claiming second overall in Spring Fling action. Third went to Trevor Donie, who went down hard in the 85cc Junior class but bounced back in the 85cc (9-13) class, taking third overall with a pair of great rides. Dutch Sport Part<: Kyle Regal backed up a runner-up finish in the 65cc class by topping all other riders in the 85cc Junior class at the ,District 14 Spring Fling in Bloomingdale, Michigan. On the little track, there was no slowing down Price. who took top honors in both the 50cc (4-6) and 50c Junior (4-6) classes. It looks like all the laps he put in this winter at the ZMX track paid off. because this kid has got some serious skills. In the 50cc (4·5) class, Kory Schocke put one of the new Cobra 50s through its paces, driving it home into the run· ner-up position. Anthony Knopp was third overail. In the 50cc Junior class, Seth Hamishfeger followed Price home after the two spent both motos locked in a fight that alone was worth the price of admission. Austin Steinfeldt turned in his second top-five finish of the day by placing third in the SOcc Junior class. bettering his finish in the 50cc (4-6) class by one position. The 50cc Senior contest was a bambumer, as Gimenez and Tyler Reamer fought tooth and nail to see who would stand on top of the box when the final scores were tallied. Gimenez won this round, but this won't be the last time these two lads will be locking homs. Nicholas Velie placed third. In the 50cc (7-8) class, it was Bennett out front, turning in a great ride and holding off Dustin Keeler, who finished ahead of a hard-charging Jarred Williams. Dutch Sport Park Bloomingdale. The Rovers threw in a good mix of fifth·gearpinned vaHeys that were broken up by some technical sections, hillclimbs and an E-ticketride sandy downhill that had even the big dogs barking for more. Childress and Steve Hengeveld were mixing it up on the first lap, and they came into cue I • the pits with Hengeveld a few seconds ahead of Childress. "I caught Hengeveld in the back section going down the fast stuff," recalled Childress. "I knew if I could stay close to him on that section again on the second lap, I could get around him." Childress didn't have to wait for the fast vailey section to get by Hengeveld. "About four miles out of the pits, we caught lapped traffic," said Childress. "Hengeveld tried to go out around the traffic and crashed. That moved me up, and I just stayed consistent to the finish." n e vv s MAY 14. 2003 65
