ed the second· place trophy without being challenged from behind. Harter had an upand-down race, going from the early lead all the way back to seventh before putting on a charge in the end to climb back up into a third-place finish. Wes Pierce was a close fourth, followed by Maida and Johnny Lovett. Nicholas Burson put in a couple of dominating rides to top both the 250cc intermediate and Four-Stroke classes aboard his VSK/O' Neal/PJ 1/Wiseco/FMF -sponsored CRF450R. Shane Smith was the runner-up in the stroker class, ahead of Ken Neitzel, Jason Clark and Jesse Drake. Garrett Norr put in an impressive come·from-behind ride, battling with Adam Gragg and Steffan en route to his second-place finish in the Intennediate class. In the combined Pro contest, Kurt Caselli and Mike Meadows went at it over the lead for much of the 45-minute race. Caselli hounded Meadows for the second half of the race before taking the lead on the last lap - but then Caselli's KTM's gas tank ran dry with just a couple of turns remaining, handing the win to Meadows. Kuhaudo Toda finished second. Caselli got a splash of fuel in time to salvage third, ahead of Smith and Scott Roegner. Path Valley Speedway Mees Doubles at Path Valley ST Opener BY lEN BREECH WILLOW HILL. PA, APR. 12 Jared Mees put his Lancaster Harley-David- son/Michael's H-D Classics-sponsored rna· chines in front of two classes as Path Valley Speedway got a belated start to Its 2003 short-track season. Mees topped the 600cc A and 500cc Two-Valve classes. Dillon Cava took the 600cc A lead from Raun Wood, Shawn Baer, Mees and Rick Win- sett. The top fOUf stayed very close in the opening laps, with Mees using the outside to take the lead off the fourth turn on the third lap, and Wood following him in second. Cava dropped back into a battle with Baer and Winsett for third. After a few laps, Baer broke free and moved up to challenge Wood for second, but he ran out of laps. With a rather small turnout, the 500 TwoValve contest was combined with the Over 30 and 600cc B classes. It quickly divided along class lines. with the 500s of Mees and Donnie Mullen out in front of Over 30 entrants Steve Heiser and Joe Dohm. and the 600cc B riders following. Then Dohm took the point from Mees, Mullen and Heiser. Mees put his Buell in front of Mullen's Yamaha. (Mullen was on the second week of his "borrow-a-bike campaign."). Although Mullen rode the wheels off the Greenland Masonry Yamaha, Mees gradually added to his margin. Heiser moved up to pressure Dohm for the Over 30 lead, and he took it on the fifth lap. After a slow start in the 600cc A final, Patriot Harley-Davidson/Bob and Mallika DeHaven-sponsored Winsett wasted no time in the Sportsman final, taking the lead from Wood, Chris Klinefelter, Cava and Baer and gradually disappearing. After a slow start, Mees got his 500cc·c1ass·winning Buell rolling, getting by Baer for third by the end of lap four. Baer stayed close for a few laps, but Mees pulled away and was right on Wood's rear when the flag came out. Mullen took the 250cc A lead from Baer, Wood and Klinefelter, but he was passed by Baer off the second turn on lap two. John Lewis, riding his 01' reliable two·stroke, used the outside line to fly into second on the following lap. In the late laps, Wood moved up to pressure the youngster, Lewis, for second, but the kid held on for the runner-up spot. Austin Greenland won a pair of Amateur classes, but he lost in the class he has dominated for the past two seasons - the 80s - to James Respoll. Greenland grabbed the lead right away from Patrick Jacobsen and Respoli, but Respoli took second off the second turn on lap three. He inched closer to Greenland and put his Cool Skunk-sponsored Honda in the lead off two on the final lap. Track owner John Winsett again used his' high line to win the Over 40 final from Steve Heiser, taking the lead on the sixth lap. Results Los Angeles County Raceway: Brett Harmon was the overall 125cc Beginner winner at the Golden Bear Grand Prix - a.k.a. the third and final round of the CMC Tri-Race Series in Palmdale, California. the Golden Bear Gran Prix, which was the third and final round of California Racing Club's 26th annual Tri-Race Series. Max Harter won the drag race to the first tum when the dead-engine start came to life. Matt Babbitt tucked in behind Harter to run in second place, ahead of Larry Rhoads, Rocky Maida and Cody Maness. Babbitt put the lone Suzuki in the field into the top spot for a little more than a lap before a crash dropped him out of contention. Maness inherited the lead, ahead of Maida, who now had his hands full with Harmon. At the 10-minute mark of the 45-minute race, Harmon was able to find a way around Maida, and then he set out after Maness. Though Maness did his best to fend off the determined Harmon, it was to no avail, as Harmon secured the top spot just before the midway point. The second half of the race was all Harmon's, as he easily motored away from the field for a convincing victory. Maness collect- P/W YAA BEG: l. Clay Dupuis (Yam); 2. Denver Sliverlake (Yom); 3.
