WERA Vintage Road Racing Round 3: Roebling Road Raceway Quick Start for Quick Bikes Bv STEVE STASER FAUKVILLE, GA, MAR. 22 Atlanta's Dick Gruhn, owner and operator of Team Quick Bikes, is off to a great start in 2003. The two· stroke wiz is chasing two championships: Formula RD (in which he is undefeated so far this season, with four wins) and Formula 500 (in which he has three victories and one close second-place finish). His Formula RD wins came in Louisiana, the double-pointer event in Jennings, Florida, and on this day at Roebling. His Formula 500 loss came at the Jennings opener, where former champion Mark Morrow nipped him at the line. At round three, the weather was beautiful, with temperatures in the 70s and clear skies as race one hit the grid. Integrity Tools' Joe Pomeroy and Gruhn's Quick Bike teammate Scott McCain, both on RZ350 Yamahas, battled side by side for most of the eight-iap race in Formula Two-Stroke, with Pomeroy pulling away at the end to take the win. Jens Zastrow took his Rodney's Cycle-sponsored 750cc Yamaha to the win in the Vintage Four por· tion, over Royce Eaton's Daytona Cycle Salvage's Ducati and Moto Europa's Mark Mitchell. This race included Vintage Two, in which David Rutherford, on the Ted Hubbardprepared BSA 500, took the victory over John Rickard's R5 Yamaha 350. Perhaps the best race of the day came in race two's Vintage Five contest. Morrow, Fred Hull, McCain and Pomeroy were glued together in a tight four-rider pack for the first two laps, with Morrow's MRA Racing RZ showing the way. On the third lap, Morrow lost the rear tire in tum three and came close to pitching it away. As Morrow fell back several lengths, Hull, on the lone four-stroke, a 500cc Inter- n e _ s ceptor, took the point. That didn't last iong, though, as Morrow got a drive out of the sweeper and blasted past the three down the front straight to retake the lead. On lap six, all four drove into tum one hard. Hull and McCain got together, and McCain went down. .. Just a racing deal," said McCain afterward. "We were both going for the same spot." Morrow stayed in front and took the victory. Hull brought his Valucycle Honda home second, and Pomeroy settled for third. Zastrow took his second win of the day in the Vintage Three portion, over Mitchell and Harley rider Nathan McManus. Gruhn ran away from the field in race three to take the Formula RD race, leaving Vintage Specialists teammates Lynn Garland and Robert McCauley to fight over second. And fight they did, as the two were within inches the entire race. Team captain Garland won that war as he drove past McCauley in turn five and held on until the checkers. After a brief battle that lasted a coupie of laps, Doug Bowie, on his BCM Motorsports Ducati, pulled away from McCain (this time Buitaco-mounted) to win the 250cc GP class. Carl Anderson and his Bulldog Cycles Yamaha 250 came home third. Gruhn was on a roll, as he again pulled away again from the field in race four's Formula 500 event. McCauley found himseif in another scrap for second. this time with Rickard's R5. McCauley pulled it out this time with a slim lead at the end to claim second. Team Steve-O's captain, Steve-O himself (Steve Staser), took the Vintage One race on the WKR/Bore Tech Honda 350, over Eaton's Aermachi 350 and Larry Cook, who was also Honda-mounted. After having hard luck all day, McCain took his 250cc Bultaco to the 350cc GP win, over Crockett Racing's Steven Mahanes, on the Ducati 350, and Bowie. On Sunday, Dale Burroughs, on the Deals Gap Resort Suzuki 1100, took top Vintage Six honors. Tennessee's Roger Shelton grabbed the Vintage Seven Mediumweight win on his 600cc Kawasaki, and William Mayfield took the Vintage Seven Heavyweight class on the Baxley Trailer Company FZR1000 Yamaha.
