Mid-South Championship Youth Hare Scrambles Series Round 10: Crossroads School Hardin, Patterson, Sims Make the Grade at the School By JEFFREY KETCHUM UNTON, KY, MAR. 16 The 10th round of the Mid-South Championship Youth Hare Scrambles Series moved north to Linton, Kentucky. A moist track and cool temperatures set the stage for a great race. The Pee Wee course was a little over a half-mile long, through the woods. The race got off to a great start as Logan P'Pool took the lead, followed by Jackson Ward. P'Pool and Ward switched places several times before the end of the race. The top five finishers were P'Pool, Ward, Dylan Majors, Trevor Vandiver and Steven Middlebrook. "It was a rough track," P'Pool stated. "I want to thank my dad for his support." The Mini course was just over two miles long, consisting mainly of woods, with some open areas. Justin Conners got the holeshot but was soon passed by Bloomington Powersports/KH Signs and Graphicsl Alpinestars/ HJC Helmets/Indy Steele-backed Kody Hardin. Then Conners went down and was passed by Honda rider Scott Brannon and Zachary Nash. Hardin was able to hold on to the lead for the rest of the race. Rounding out the top five were Brannon, Nash, Tyler Carter and Cody Schoettmer. "I had fun," Hardin said. "It was a good track. The Junior A and B classes followed the same course as the Mini class. Sarge's Cycles' Jacob Patterson took the lead off the start but had to battle it out with Bush Motorsports/AC Racing's Sean Gentry for the entire race. It Patterson and Gentry were followed by Loupie Lambruno, Josh Zanet and Luke Robinson to round out the top five. Patterson stated that this course was "the best I've ridden so far. Brandon Crawford got the holeshot in the Junior A class but was soon passed by MS R/Sm ith/ Klotz/White Broth ers- backed Cody Miller, as well as Chaz Akers and Dustin Smith, before entering the woods. Miller was unable to hold on to the lead, and Sims was able to get around him. Following close in third place was Yamaha-mounted Akers. "The course was good," Akers said. "I thought I broke my foot when I wrecked, but I just kept going." The top five at the checkered flag were Sims, Miller, Akers, Ryan Mullins and Josh White. The Youth riders thanked the promoters for putting on a fun ride and also sent a big thank-you to Scott Horton for electronically scoring the race. The series now moves back to Tennessee for the next round at Hazard Hill. It Crossroads School Linton, Kentucky Results: March 16. 2003 (Round 10) P/W: 1. Logan P'Pool (KTM): 2. Mid-South MX Championship Series Round 4: Thayer Motorsports Farm Johnson, Dustin' the Crop at the Farm By DIRTB1KEJ'llJKE THAYER, MO, MAR. 16 The Pro Privateer/Dunlop Mid-South Series made a swing northward into Thayer, Missouri, and spring was in the air. Tony Ackerman, whose Thayer Motorsports Farm is located near the Missouri·Arkansas border, claims that "this Farm grows motocrossers. There were some seeds sprouting in the 125cc Novice crop. Dustin Johnson took his Honda to the front and won both motos. Dylan Patterson of Cherokee Village, Arkansas, nailed the holeshot as 23 Novice riders tried to crowd into the first turn. Johnson, from nearby Cave City, Arkansas, was in second and pres· sured Patterson in every corner. Patterson soon crumpled under that pressure. and John· It son slipped by in the woods section. Kawasaki rider Brad Calhoun from Jacksonville, Arkansas, was in third, watching the battle for the lead. Calhoun, who is still considered a top 85cc rider in Arkansas, rides his 125 with the seat modified so that he can touch the footpegs. Patterson slid out in a corner, and Calhoun made his move into second. Dover, Arkansas, Yamaha rider Jerad Dover from Dover, Arkansas, was the next rider to go by Patterson, and Chase Pierce from McRae, Arkansas, followed Dover. The positions then remained the same for the rest of the race. Johnson came out in moto two with one thing on his mind: winning. He took the holeshot and never looked back en route to his second win of the day. Pierce was giving Johnson a run for it after his reflexes put him Thayer Motorsports Farm: Michael Dean Gage (489) leads Nathaniel Benoit (9) in the 250cc Pro contest at round four of the Mid-South MX Championship Series in Thayer, Missouri. 125 BEG: 1. Chris Permenter of Shreveport, Louisiana, had his Yamaha running in the top three and was pushing Pierce, and then he blew past in the rhythm section. Permenter was not happy with his 10th-place finish in moto one (after having run in the top five and then suffering a flat tire). Mota two was better for Permenter. as he held second all the way to the finish. Pierce was able to hold on to third, and Patterson slipped to fifth. The best ride came from Calhoun, who was mired in the pack, way out of the top 10, on the first lap; however, as the race wore on, Calhoun made his charge, pass· ing six riders on his way into fourth by the end of the moto. His hard charging gave him second overall with a 2-4 score. Permenter's 10th in mota one and his excellent ride to second in mota two gave him a well·earned fifth overall. There were several new riders at Thayer, checking out the track in preparation for the Loretta Lynn's Qualifier in April. Brandon Pope from Spring Grove, Illinois, made his trip to Missouri worthwhile: Pope took his Cobra to the front and won both motos of the 51 cc (7 -8) class and then mounted his Kawasaki and showed the 65cc (Up to 8) class why he was there, as he routed that class, too, Pope wasn't finished; he lined up in the 85cc (7 -11) class, again on a Kawasaki. The road to victory was a little tougher in the 85cc class, but Brandon took on 12 other riders and managed two sixth-place finishes. Kelby Travis made the trip up from Heber Springs, Arkansas, to top the 85cc Junior (7-11) class with a 4-1 score, and Robby Jones came all the way from Bastrop, Louisiana, to nail second place with a 3-2 tally. Nick Ramey couldn't back up his firstmoto win, and his fourth in moto two held him to third overall. Blake Keeton of Donaldson, Arkansas, swapped moto wins in both the Pro classes with Greenwood, Arkansas, rider Nathaniel Benoit. However, the hardest-working rider in the Pro classes was Michael Gage, who contested the 125cc Pro, 250cc Pro and the Over 30 Expert classes. The ironman from Gilmer, Texas, won both motos of the Over 30 class and scored two seconds and two thirds in the Pro classes. He drove the longest distance, rode the most laps· and got paid the most money. Podium One Gold Series Round 4: Podium One Motoplex Blake Pounds Podium By MARK BUCHANAN CHARLESTOWN, IN, MAR. 16 The weather was perfect for March, with sunny skies and 70-degree temperatures for the 235 riders on hand for round four of the Podium One Gold Series at the Podium One Motoplex in Charlestown, Indiana. New track owners Jay and Kathy Squire had the track in great shape for the second day in a row, and once again they did a great job putting on the event, with the help of several of the old Podium One crew. T.J. Blake went virtually unchallenged in the 125cc A and 250cc A classes. Blake took the holeshot and went wire to wire for both moto wins in the 250cc A class on his Suspension Works/Finish Line Honda four-stroke, in front of Honda pilot Kevin Hildebrand. Blake equaled that performance in the 125cc A class, taking the holeshot for both moto wins. again on a Yamaha. Alex Hunter finished second in both motos on a Yamaha, followed by Ryan Koontz, on an Answer/Bloomington Powersports Suzuki. Dustin Walker took both moto wins in the 250cc B class, on a Gateway Cycles/661 Kawasaki, after a great battle with KTM Motor- Thayer Motorsports Farm Thayer.
