Southern All-Stars MX Tour Round 3: TMT Motocross Park Log Road MX: Joe Penrod was fast and smart, taking strong wins in the 125B class on day one of the District 14 Spring Fling in Bronson, Michigan. Boruff, Clark Like TNT at TMT! to come back from a botched start in the opening moto to finish in second spot, behind Clark. In moto two, Boruff managed to get past race leader Clark and hold on for the moto win in a close finish, netting the overall. Indiana's Clark stumbled early in the opening 125cc A moto, but he recovered to finish second, behind Boruff. In moto two, Clark grabbed the lead at the start and held on for the win and the overall in a close finish ahead of Boruff. In the 125cc and 250cc B divisions, Tom's Cycle/SYD-backed Torre Streifthau looked like he was on his way to a four-moto sweep. Streifthau had dominated the 125cc action, winning both motos ahead of Rob Wooden. And, In the opening 250cc B moto, Streifthau turned a midpack start into a first-place finish. In the day's final 250cc B moto, however, Streifthau had to settle for a second-place finish, close behind Phillip Meyers, who led that final mota from start to finish. netting the gold By GARY CRIDER District 14 Spring Fling Log Road MX Penrod, Roberts Rip at the Road By BART NEWMAN BRONSON. MI. MAR. 22 On day one of Log Road MX's Spring Fling weekend, Joe Penrod was on the gas and unbeaten aboard his Nevins Motorsports/Pro Circuit/Troy Lee Designs-backed KTM 125 SX. taking a double-moto victory in the 125cc B division. Meanwhile, in M.ini action, James Roberts used speed and consistency to take on all challengers in the 65cc class. When the gate dropped for the first 125cc B moto, Penrod was ready, nailing the holeshot on Log Road's long. fast start straight. Steven Carnahan, Cody Chmielewski. Robbie Conklin and Ryan Watson all gave chase in hopes of running Penrod down, That running order would hold for the first couple of laps before Shane Sewell pushed his way past Watson to take over fifth. Out front. Penrod thundered alone on a clear track, leaving the fighting to Carnahan, Chmielewski and Conklin, who were in an outrageous battle for the runner-up spot. With four laps in the books, the white fiag came out for the leader, Penrod. Carnahan held the upper hand in the race for second, while Conklin lost a position each to Chmielewski and Sewell after he made a mistake. Penrod motored in for the win with a six~second lead over Carnahan, who finished in the runner-up spot. The race for third came down to the wire, with Chmielewski holding off Sewell at the line. Conklin recovered to finish fifth. Mota two started out much the same, with Penrod out in front of the pack, which this time consisted of Conklin, Sewell, Kirk Newman and Carnahan. all working hard to run Penrod down. The rider on the move was Chmielewski; after a horrific start, he had parked his Honda in fourth place behind Penrod, Conklin and Sewell by the end of lap two. Chmielewski hounded Sewell for the next three laps, looking for a path to the front, but Sewell had him covered. After his good start. Newman's advantage was qUickly evaporat· ing, as Carnahan wanted another top· five finish. Penrod didn't let the bickering behind him affect his race; he put his head down, charged for the checkered fiag and took the moto win as well as the overall victory. Conklin kept Penrod honest throughout the race and held on to second, which was good enough to lock up second overall as well. Sewell's second· moto third-place finish gave him the last posi· tion on the podium. A miscue on lap five by Chmielewski dropped him to fourth in the mota, which matched his overall finish. Carnahan couldn't match his first·moto second and came across the line in fifth, equaling his overall finish for the event. "My Nevins Motorsports KTM was fast stock, It Penrod said, "and after we put on the Pro Circuit pipe and silencer, it ripped, giving me the holeshots I needed today." In 65cc-c1ass action, Roberts used riding savvy and a speed that belied his years to net the overall victory in the 65cc division with a 1-2 punch. Roberts rode well all day. despite getting a less·than·stellar start in mota two. However, Roberts did what he had to do to get the overall, which was finish in the runner·up spot. Vaughn Mays (4-1) was bullet-fast but had some bad luck in moto one that left him in the runner-up position overall. James Jus· tice (2-3) used great corner speed and good starts to make the trek from Columbus. Ohio, worthwhile by locking up third overall. Josh Rutherford (3-4) was solid in both motos and was easily one of quickest riders through the quad·jump section. Rounding out the top five was "Mr. Holeshot," lach Hays (3-5). A quick trigger finger and a Hi·Tech Horsepower motor had this young speedster in turn one first in both 65cc motos. The day started off wet, cold and windy, but more than 300 Midwest motocross racers showed up to challenge the course and each other in preparation for the Loretta Lynn's Amateur National Area Qualifier on May 17 and 18. which. after day two of the Spring Fling, will be the next event on tap at Log Road MX. TRACY CITY, TN. MAR. 23 Twenty years ago, Keith Turpin and Kelly Foutch were two of the best-known motocross riders in the Southeast. Last year, Turpin and Foutch got together on a farm in the moun· tains of Tennessee and marked out the course for a motocross track· and, with the help of track builder Glenn Bates, TMT Motocross Park was born. Among the track's many commendable features is the dark, loamy surface. As track manager Foutch is quick to point out, "We have the same dirt as Loretta's!" Indeed, the AMA National course at Loretta Lynn's Ranch is only a two·hour drive from TMT. Several races have already been held here, but this was the first one to be AMA·sanc· tioned. The event was round three of the Southern All-Stars MX Tour, and more than 300 riders, representing eight states, turned out for the Fox/Dunlop/MSR-sponsored series round. Racing was close in nearly every class, but the day's highlights came during the fourmoto match between Team Green/Pro·Circuit· backed Shawn Clark and Honda/Motoplanet's Jon Boruff, in the 125cc and 250cc A divisions. Their debate was very close, and neither rider seemed to have the advantage. At the end of the day, Clark and Boruff each claimed a class win over the other, and both riders had earned exactly the same number of All-Star Series points. Soruffs winning 2·1 score in the 250cc A contest was particularly hard-earned: He had via his 2·1 tally, over Streifthau's 1-2 score. Rob Wooden and Ryan Stanesu had a decisive battle for third in mota two; Wooden made the pass on the last lap. finishing third for third overall. Meyers returned in the Over 25 division, where he squared off with Four-Stroke-c1ass winner Matt Summers. Meyers won both motos by a narrow margin over Summers each time. Extreme Cycle/Dalton Motorsports' Jason Ivey took control of both 250cc C motos. Ivey seemed somewhat surprised by his 1·1 perfor· mance. Log Road MX Bronson.
