The seventh annual event took place on day one of the Timekeep~ ers Motorcycle Club's "Wild Weekend" at Clear Creek, California. The two-loop, 60-mile event was carefully laid out to accommodate all skill levels from the Beginner to the Expert by TMC's course expert, Bill Zakareckis. on the same minute, enjoyed good course concUtions and great weather. Loop one, at 32 miles, offered a variety of trails, fire roads and hills. At check two, which was the end of the first special test, Wallace, Nick Ryan, Andrew Bagoje and 14-year-old Kevin Mihovich were the only riders able to score the desired goal of zero points. "I had wait for opportunities to pass and then ride hard," Cycle Gear-sponsored Wallace said. "I really had to work to get from check one to check two on time." A few miles later, at the third check, several contestants were caught off guard as they arrived early, and "bum" scores, ranging from two to 52 points, were added to many scorecards. By the time racers made it to the gas stop, Wallace was alone in the lead with a score of .06. Charles Stanley was in second with 1.87, and Mihovich's 2.27 placed him third. Timothy Campbell had the only three-point score, and Mark Maldonado was next with four. Several six-point scores followed, including those held by two other Youth contestants, Cody Pine and Joey Pascarella. The second loop's 28 miles featured another well-mjxed combination of trails, hills and fire roads. It also included some splendid springtime views of several valleys and mountains from the higher trails near San Benito Peak. By the time racers found their way back to the finish at camp, only a few competitors had been able to make a clean sweep of loop two and add only a few extra tie-breaker seconds to their scores. Besides Wallace and a few other Sportsman racers, three Youth contestants (and future D36 champions). Mihovich, Pascarella and Pine, managed to showcase their enduro skills by also turning in zero-point second loops. "I really liked the section of flowing singletrack trails after gas," Shift/Smith/Mach 1 Motorsports-supported Pascarella said. "It was the most fun!" After scores were tallied, Wallace's final .008 was good for the overall victory. Mihovich's 2.042 beat out Stanley's 2.135 for second, and Maldonado's 4.122 topped Campbell's 4.233 for fourth. Pascarella and Pine finished sixth and eighth among a tough field of adult competitors. "This family format is ideal for teaching 'newbies' about enduros," Wallace said. "There are lots of opportunities to stop and explain timekeeping and strategies and to ride together." The next round of the series is scheduled at the California Enduro Rider Association's Training Wheels Family Enduro on June 8 at Foresthill, California. Results O/A: l. Matth~w Wallace (Yam): 2.
