District 14 Spring Fling Log Road MX Auten's Assault NAnONAI. MX PROMO.,ERS GROUP By BART NEWMAN BRONSON, MI. MAR. 23 Michigan's District 14 Spring Fling kicked off at Log Road MX. With factory contingencies from Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha on the line, plus a great track and good weather, more than 550 riders joined in the fun on day two. T.J. Auten Jr. was the man of the hour, grabbing the 125cc Junior-class overall on his YZ250F. In moto one of the 125cc Junior class, Thousand Oaks Yamaha rider Cory Slavik pulled the gang through turn one. Slavik wasn't without company, as Grant Moreland, Jerry Lorenz, Steven Carnahan and Auten all had visions of victory in mind. That runnjng order held for two laps as these young lads set a blistering pace. Out front, Slavik took advantage of the open road and settled into an incredible pace. Moreland was second, while Lorenz, Auten and Carnahan were at war over third. A slight bobble by Lorenz left the door open for both Auten and Carnahan to slip by. At the white flag. Slavik was still out front, holding a mistake-free eight-second lead. Moreland was second, but Auten and Carnahan were all over his rear wheel in one of the best battles of the day. With less than half a lap to go, a rut sucked Moreland's front end in, sending him to the ground. That spelled disaster for Moreland, as Auten, Carnahan and Shane Sewell all made their way past before he could remount his Pro Source Suzuki/ Moreland's Motocross-sponsored RM. In the end, Slavik took the win by 10 seconds. Auten took second. holding off each and every attempt by Carnahan. who finished third. Lorenz and Sewell made up the rest of the top five. Moreland recovered to finish sixth. As they lined up for the second moto, there was tension in the air. The top six kids in moto one all had a shot at the day's overall. and this was the mota that would decide it. Moreland had his start mojo going in full force, and he got a great jump off the line that he then turned into a full-bikelength lead by the time he exited tum one. Auten, Slavik, Lorenz and Adam Hardin were all flying in formation behind Moreland, none of them ready to concede the win to him just yet. The fences were lined with fans, and while the running order didn't change much, there was no shortage of action. Auten and Slavik were in a rumble that would ultimately decide the day's overall winner. All the while, Lorenz, Hardin and Carnahan had their own dance going on to see who would stay in the top five. At the checkers, it was Moreland with the moto win. and his 6-1 tally was good enough for third overall. Auten fought off Slavik's advances and finished second in the moto and first overall on a 2-2 tally. Slavik was third in the moto and his 1-3 finishes translated into second overall. Lorenz (4-4) nabbed fourth in the moto as well as overall, and Carnahan (5-5) displaced Hardin (6-6) to claim fifth in the moto, which matched his overall score. The always-popular Log Road Challenge is a 20-minute-plus-two-lap money moto that's open to both A and B riders. When the gate dropped, the brute horsepower of Derek Rose's CRF450R sent him out front, throwing roost all over Brad Modjewski, Dustin Pulley, John Grewe and John Penrod. After one lap of being pelted, Modjewski pulled out all the stops and dropped Rose back to second with a classic inside/outside pass in the switchbacks. By halfway, Modjewski left no doubt who was going to win this race, pulling out a good 15-second lead before settling into a swift pace. Pulley and Grewe were closing on Rose, while Penrod was being challenged by Nick Vaughn for fifth. Pulley passed Rose on lap six to take over second, but by then Modjewski was long gone. Rose then lost third to the elder statesman of the class, Grewe, who took third on lap eight. just after the two-lap board came out. Taking the win and the S250 check was Modjewski, who also took both A-class wins. Pulley was a solid second, and third went to Grewe (who also won the day's Over 30 and Over 35 classes). Rose held on to fourth, and Vaughn was fifth.
