Paul Pearcy dominated the first 125cc Intermediate moto right from the drop of the gate. Second place went to Sean Borkenhagen. KTM-mounted Nick Hernandez came from last place to finish a respectable third, over Andy D'Arrigo and Joel Ard. Pearcy put his KX 125 into the point position on lap one of moto two and proceeded to increase his lead to nearly 30 seconds by the time the checkers fell. Hernandez got a much better start this time and went 3·2 for second overall. Borkenhagen (2-4), D'Arrigo (4-3) and Ard (5-5) rounded out the top five. Rainbow Canyon Motocross Track It's a Girl's World By DICK GOODWIN ELGIN, NV, MAR. 9 In the high-test world of motocross racing, most of the participants are boys or men. Most - but not all. There are some female entrants, such as Jena Ellis. She regularly competes in the 85cc Stock and Open classes. But she doesn't just ride around. She's fast! She frequently gets the holeshot ahead of the large group, and she always runs near the front. Those who let their guard down a little bit will get zapped. And that's what happened in the 85cc race at Rainbow Canyon Motocross Track in Elgin, Nevada. A not unusual holeshot had Ellis and her Suzuki out in front of the first race. Robert Campbell and Tony Gelsone were in close pursuit. Ellis kicked it up a notch, taking advantage of the bar-to-bar combat going on behind her between Campbell and Gelsone for second. After a pass-and-repass duel, Campbell emerged with a stranglehold on second. But by then Ellis was long gone, winning moto one with ease. Campbell led Gelsone and Brett Proctor through the checkers. Ellis cranked up another one of her specialties to open the second half, just barely ahead of Campbell. A dandy battle dissolved at the end of lap one when Campbell highsided in the sand turn, dropping from contention. Gelsone took over second, but nobody was catching Ellis; she blew through the pipes to take the win and the overall 85cc trophy. Gelsone led Proctor and Campbell in the final standings. The Big-Bike classes all went off in one large gate. When the gate dropped, Terry Fomof blasted off to lead Jeff Murphy and the rest of the pack. lach Gosnell moved up to take over the lead, and Brian Lopez was also coming on. Once in front, Gosnell stretched his lead, as Lopez settled into a solid second. Murphy held down third. That would be the finishing order for round one. Turning up the determination just a click, Murphy edged Mr. Fornof and Mr. Lopez around the first turn as race two exploded into action. Gosnell was raging toward the front of the pack, and, when Murphy took an off-track excursion, he moved in for the kill. A pass for the lead put Gosnell in position to win his sec· and straight victory, but Lopez hung in there to keep him honest. A recovered Murphy held down third, leading Sergio Navarro and FornoL Gosnell kept it hammered, winning his second straight race. Lopez was a solid second, leading Murphy and Navarro past the checkers. Results 65: I. Steven Gelsone (Kaw). 85: I. Jena Ellis (Suz); 2. Tony Gelsone (Kaw): 3. Brett Proctor: 4. By GREG ROBERTSON ADELANTO,CA,MAR.22 Under the watchful eye of his mentor, GFI Racing's Goat Breker, Bobby Bonds fought his way to a two· mota sweep of the 250cc Pro class during the inaugural running of the GFI/Goat Eyewear·sponsored National Amateur Day, held at Racetown 395. The 250cc Pro class and the Over 30 Pros were grouped together in one gate. Over 30 Pro Ty Davis absconded with the holeshot as the opening 30·minute mota got under way. Sean Collier gated in third, but within a lap he had his CRF450R around both Tim Weigand and Davis to run out front. Weigand stayed glued to Collier's back fender and was soon joined by Bonds, who had gotten a midpack start. The three front-runners started to distance themselves from the field. Bonds was finally able to find a way around Collier at the Rainbow Canyon Motocross Track: Jena Ellis was the winner in both the 85cc and 125cc Open classes in Elgin, Nevada. Sherri Cruse (Hon): 4. Collier kept close tabs on Bonds and dogged him all the way to the checkers. Weigand was all by himself in third, followed by Davis, Mark Tilley, David Gassin and Jon Simmons. Davis put the power of his Yl450F to good use, snaring the holeshot in the second 30· minute moto, ahead of Weigand. Luke Orr and Tilley. Collier and Bonds got together in the third turn and went down; they picked themselves up and got restarted well back of the pack. Meanwhile, up front, Davis and Weigand were putting on a good show while battling over the lead. Weigand finally managed to make a pass on lap six. Weigand then put a couple of seconds on Davis, who wasn't able to do anything about the hard-charging Bonds, who overtook him for second place. A couple of laps later, Weigand fell victim to Bonds in an offMcamber turn. Bonds continued on uncontested aboard his Thousand Oaks Kawasaki/Goat/MSR-backed KX250 to earn the first-place payback. Collier also put in an outstanding ride, coming from dead last to pass Weigand for second place with slightly more than a lap remaining. Tilley went 4-4 for fourth, followed by Orr (8-5). His racing at round four of the Casino Towns MX Series in Mesquite, Nevada, was no different, as he trounced the 65cc (7-9) Stock class and topped the 65cc Open class as well. In the combined 65cc Stock race, 10-11class hotshoe Casey Mello charged off the gate to lead Ginden and Green River, Racetown 395 MX Part<: Bobby Bonds was the 250cc Pro winner at the very first National Amateur Day in Adelanto, California. cucle n e vv s APRIL t 6, 2003 73
