FMF/Honda of Houston Winter Racing Series Round 3: Village Creek Motocross Park By KAT SPANN AND THE BECKSTER PHOTOS BY JOHN KISOR FORT WORTH, TX, FEB. 1-2 (V)TM of Texas-backed Cody Dick- (j)) ey rallied to two class wins after heated battles with Lance Hollister in the 125cc Intermediate class and Jonathan Kerr in the 125cc Before The Hill (16-24) class during round three of the third annual FMF/Honda of Houston Winter Racing Series, hosted by Village Creek MX Park. Nearly 400 entries competed in the two-day format of racing. Lukas Tankersley, Tyler Cummings, Chaz Holladay and Kyle Cunningham each claimed two class wins on Saturday, on which only Minibike and Beginner classes were run. Dickey and Vet racer Franz Hyland were the only riders to stake a claim on multiple wins during Sunday's program. Dickey and Kerr faced off in the first 125cc (16-24) mota. Dickey took the holeshot. Kerr got by Dickey on the first trip down the hill, but Dickey came back and retook the lead on the bottom section just before the end of the first lap. On lap two, Dickey was finally able to shake off Kerr, while Andrew Clark began to apply pressure on Kerr for his second-place spot. Kerr spent the rest of the mota trying to lose Clark, but Clark held fast and finished a close third. The second mota once again saw Kerr all over Dickey when the gate dropped. This time, Kerr was a little more clingy and kept pace with Dickey as the two began to extend their lead from the pack. Clark got a fourth-place start, behind Adam Turner, and spent the first three laps looking for a line around him. Finally, on the final lap, Clark got an opening and went for it, passing Turner for third, and he held the position to the checkered flag. In the meantime, Kerr continued to stay in Dickey's wake until a miscue on the top of the hill had him taking a brief soil sample. Kerr was able to keep his bike running' but the error cost him any chance at overtaking tlie lead. Riley Kurosky absconded with the holeshot in the first 125cc B mota, with Dickey and Kerr in pursuit. Dickey outjumped Kurosky and took over the lead on top of the hill. Hollister got by Kerr for third, with Clark running fifth and Turner sixth. A tight group of riders ended the first lap, but Clark had his game plan together, passing both Kerr and Hollister in the whoops to claim third. Hollister battled back and passed Clark a few turns later and then went after Kurosky. Dickey began to put some 54 MARCH 12, 2003' eye I e Cody Dickey (37) was the hot ticket In the 125cc ranks on SUnday, winning both the 18-24 and Intermediate events with three out of four moto wins. Here, behind Dickey, Lance Hollister (121) battles Jonathan Kerr (41) for second at round two of the third annual PMFlHonda of Houston Winter Racing Series. distance on the pack, while Hollister was relentless in his pursuit of second, showing Kurosky his front tire several times. On lap three, Hollister got by Kurosky after a side-by-side battle through the whoops, but Kurosky took his position back. This battle continued into lap five, and both riders closed in on Dickey; in the final leg of the track, just before the checkered flag, Kurosky and Hollister both passed Dickey to finish first and second. It was later found out that Dickey had suffered a flat tire. With a new tire on his KTM, Dickey blasted off the gate in mota two and took no prisoners. Kerr followed Dickey through the first lap before Hollister got the goods on Kerr early on lap two through the whoops. The top three put on a remarkable show for the spectators as they counted down the laps one by one. Dickey took the win, with Hollister finishing second and Kerr a close third. Kurosky followed in fourth, and Ronnie Jackson rounded out the top five. Dickey's 3-1 tally was good enough to take the overall win, ahead of Hollister's pair of deuces for second and Kurosky's 1-4 score for third. Unbeaten through the series thus far is Turner Cavender, in the 125cc Beginner class. Young Cavender has n e _ s only been racing about 10 months, but he has already demonstrated some great talent. Skylar Henson snared the holeshot in mota one, but Cavender took over the lead early, and by the start of the lap two he already had an eight-second lead. Steven Bruner got by Henson on the first lap and finished second, followed by Henson and Brad McCulloch. The second mota was an allout race to the end of the first lap between Cavender and Henson; Cavender took the position just before the finish line. Henson held fast to second place, followed by Bruner, McCulloch and John Stephenson. eN 85 BEG (12-15): 1. A.J. Swanson (Hon); 2. Tyler Crosson (Hon); 3. Drew Russell (Yam); 4. Amanda King (Hon); 5.
