the 250cc. 125cc and Youth (12-15) classes. Maloy kept it strictly business in all of his motos, working his way out front early and pulling a good lead. Out front, Maloy was able to ride his own race, leaving the others to scrap for the runner·up spots. Jason Waters and Jordan Gooch had a heated battle in moto one of the 16-29 class. The two were tit for tal for several laps. A cou· pie of small mistakes on Gooch's part allowed Waters to pull ahead and take the moto win. Chris Reeder ended up third. Moto two again saw Waters and Gooch lock horns. Gooch took the lead this go-around and rode mistake·free until the end. With the second-moto win, Gooch took the overall victory. Waters got second. and Reeder went 3-3 for a solid third. Another class that provided some great racing was the 85cc (12-15) class. Florida riders Nick Mclain and Joel Donaroma were all over each other in both motos. McLain got the start in moto one; Donaroma rounded the first corner in about fourth. Donaroma quickly moved into second and set his sights on McLain. Donaroma tried everything to get around the lightning-fast McLain but was unsuccessful. Coming in a secure but distant third was Brandon Duensing. The tables were turned in mota two when Donaroma grabbed the holeshot. McLain pushed a little too hard in the opening laps and made a few small miS M takes. That was all Donaroma needed out front; he pulled a lead and was able to main M tain it until the checkers flew. Mclain regained his composure a little too late and had to settle for second. Duensing again had third wrapped up. Bellamy Motorsports rider Jonathan Edge made his 125cc debut with a bang, going 1-1 in the 125cc Beginner class. In mota one, Edge took the early lead and racked up about a five· second lead. The field of riders also included the 250cc Beginner riders, who started on the same gate. Edge took the checkers first, ahead of both groups. Cory Hart and Shawn Anderson finished two-three after a battle of their own. Moto two saw Edge get another great start. A few of the 250cc riders pulled ahead on the long start, but Edge put his head down and again put his Suzuki out front. Everything was under control until Edge lost his front end in a slow turn and went down. He only lost a few positions in the fall, and he was able to fight back to take the win with a dramatic pass on the finish-line jump. The last-chance qualifier was up first, with Normandin on the pole. Strong in the middle and Henmant on the outside of the front row. The second row had New York's Tom Burge and Oakden lining up 10 yards back. The tapes went up for this four-lap sprint, and Nonmandin took the lead away from Hermant on the first lap. Behind them. a duel was shaping up for the last transfer spot. between third-placed Strong and fourth-placed Oakden. On the third lap, Oakden dived under Strong to take the position but unfortunately hit one of the cones that are set three feet inside the pole marker. Nor· mandin went on to win, Hermant finished second, and Strong was awarded the final transfer position when Oakden was disqualified for hitting the cone. The six·lap main event was next. Mann, Barlow and Rafferty were, inside to out, on the front row. Last·chance racers Normandin, Hermant and Strong made up the second row. Starter Patrick "Pork Chop" Meyers staged the riders and released the gate. Mann forced his way through the first corner ahead of three· time and defending World Champion Barlow to take the lead. Barlow tried his best to take the lead and keep Mann from becoming the first two-time winner of the season, but his game efforts were to no avail. as Mann was on a mission. Each lap, he stretched his lead until at the checkered Mann's margin of victory was a full four or five bikelengths over Barlow - a decisive win and a strong statement with World Championship implications from Mann. Rafferty held on to claim the third podium position. Normandin, Hermant and Strong finished fourth. fifth and sixth, respectively. With just the Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and Trenton, New Jersey, rounds remaining in the 2003 World Championship chase. it's anybody's guess who will be crowned champion. Mann's victory put him ahead in points by a slim margin of five. The 2002 Rookie of the Year, Will Beverage, returns to the tour in Johnstown after recovering from injuries received in a wreck at round two on January 4 in Moline, Illinois, and his goal is to win! England's Anthony Barlow, James Mann and Carl Belfield filled the fourth through second starting spots, respectively, with Sparks. Nevada's Bill Hermant starting from the pole. The tapes went up, and Belfield got the jump into turn one. The three Englishmen rode as if there were no tomorrow; there were three contact incidents in the first lap alone! Something had to give. and it finally did: Mann clipped Belfield while making a pass. sending Belfield into the dashers. The race was red-flagged and stopped. The paramedics diagnosed Belfield as having a broken right leg, and he was taken to the hospital. where a pin was installed in his right femur early the next morning. All those involved with ICE Speedway wish him the fastest possible complete recovery. When the first heat was restarted, Mann and Barlow were banging on each other from the get-go. Mann toughed it out and went on to take the win. Barlow finished close behind for second, and Hermant took the third-place points. Heat two gave everyone the opportunity to see New York's Cam Rafferty on the ice for the first time. He lived up to his billing as the East's top rider by winning the race, over North Carolina's Paul Normandin and New York's Chris Strong.
