Midwest Supercross Brookings Area Multiplex Hoff is What's Up at Doc's By BRAD LETCHER BROOKINGS, SD, JAN. 25 Doc Peterson brought the Midwest Supercross to the Brookings Area Multiplex for two days of racing. The second night of racing show~ cased racers from five states and brought a little summer to the snow· covered area. The sold-out crowd was treated to heated battles, as ] 88 riders in nine classes banged bars, swapped positions, defied gravity and, in some cases, kissed the dirt. As many of the riders got on their bikes for the first time in m~:mths, for some of them, finding a good rhythm was not easy. The heat races had plenty of fireworks and agony-ofdefeat-type crashes involving several riders at once. By the time the main events were taking place, most of the riders seemed to have found their old form, and the racing got tighter, smoother and more exciting. In the Pee Wee A class, Elliott Power Sports' Austin Anderson led from the drop of the green flag, but Jerico Gaertner came from midpack and caught him on the last lap. Anderson's lead seemed insurmountable for most of the race before Gaertner came a-knockin', and they battled side by side for 50 MARCH 5, 2003' c u e • e nearly three·quarters of the last lap. Anderson took the checkers with Gaertner just off his rear tire. The 125cc Band 125cc C classes also saw riders come through the pack and end up just short of the top spot. Interiake's Sport Center's Chris Stefani held off Kyle Heronimus for the 125cc C-c1ass win. Heronimus started out in ninth place but cut his way to second at the checkers. In the 125cc B class, Outdoor Motosports/TBT Racing Suspension/Thor MX's Travis Engle grabbed the holeshot and took the victory, over Phil Melmer. who had started off in fourth. In one case, leading nearly the entire race was just not enough. In the Vet class, Peterson Motors' Wes Stein took the holeshot and led ali the way to the last lap before crashing out. Mike Gonnerman stole the victory after passing Fairmont Glass & Sign/Holtz Construction's Jon Holtz on the second lap, as well as the downed Stein on the finai lap. Holtz heid on to second, ahead of Ken Meiers and Ed Smithback. The 85cc class showcased a rider that had everyone's jaw planted firmly on the ground (including the Pro riders). Mike Krueger started off the main event buried in the back of the n e _ s Brookings Area Multiplex: Brandon Hoff soared to victory by sweeping both the 125cc Pro and 250cc Pro classes at the Midwest Supercross event in Brookings, South Dakota. pack, as Zac Perrizo grabbed the holeshot. Krueger jumped to sixth by the end of the first lap and then passed Eric Arhrendt and Nick Feist on the second lap to take over fourth. On the next lap, Krueger blitzed past Josh Jacot and Justin Schroeder to climb into second before taking the lead from Perrizo. In less than three laps, Krueger had sliced through the pack to take the lead. This was astonishing enough, but V'hat made it so amazing was how it did it: Krueger was using his KX85 to jump the triple as well as the huge finish-line double. Many of the 125cc Band 250cc B riders chose not to take on this jump; Krueger made it look easy! He will be one to watch in the future. The 125cc and 250cc Pro classes showcased some of the best riders in the area. On this night, B&B Cycle's Brandon Hoff found himself out front in every Pro·c1ass race. As a matter of fact, Hoff went four for four on the evening, with easy wins and a big payday. Factory Connection/2 Rivers Racing/Factory Effects-backed Adam Daniels had a good night, placing third in the 125s and second in the 250cc class. Local hero Todd Fletcher battied Daniels to take second in the 125s and third in the 250cc class. Congratulations are due the Petersons, for bringing the first sell·out moto·event to the Multiplex, which means that Midwest Supercross will surely be back for another great event next year. Oklahoma State Championship Series Round 1: Woodland Hills Off Road Park Blackwell Sets the Bar By CONNIE JOHNSON ANADARKO, OK, JAN. 26 The Oklahoma State Championship Series kicked off in Anadarko at the Woodland Hills Off Road Park on the last weekend of January, with below-freezing temperatures and some great racing. A huge crowd showed up for the first round in spite of the cold. Zach Blackwell, one of the two racing Blackwell brothers, was glad he braved the weather, as he went home with a first-place trophy in the Four-Stroke class. Blackwell went bar to bar with Caleb Car· penter coming off the gate in the first mota of the Four·Stroke class. Both had their Yama· has pinned coming around the sweeping first turn; Blackwell edged into the lead as he negotiated his way into turn two. Robbie Robertson, on a KTM, also got by Carpenter and followed Blackwell to the finish line. Carpenter gave up yet another position when Honda rider Ben Schrik got around him. Schrik then started putting the pressure on Robertson but remained in third when the checkers came out. Carpenter held off the charge of Yamaha pilot Brad Rogers to finish fourth. Schrik got the holeshot in moto two and had quite a battle with Robertson for first until Robertson went down on top of the hill in the middle of lap three. Schrik then regained the iead, but Biackwell was closing fast after a midpack start. When the checkers flew, it was Schrik, Blackwell. Yamaha rider Trey Wohlberg, Rogers, and Honda rider Kris Brown. In the Over 25 Amateur class I Eric Sutton stole the show on his Kawasaki. Sutton got the jump off the gate in moto one and immediately started putting distance between himself and the rest of the class. Bobby Bowles kept his Suzuki in the second-place spot from start to finish while hard charges and crashes went on behind him. Yamaha jockey Christopher Ruble went from third to fifth in the four-lap race, while Jason Brazeal rode his Yamaha through the entire pack to finish third. Mike Huttenlocker put his Kawasaki in fourth place at the finish. Brazeal nailed the holeshot in mota two but was quickly passed by Sulton. When
