FMF Honda of Houston Winter Series Round 2: Four States Motocross Park O'Dell Deals Four at Four States By Terren O'Dell (7) was in top form at round two of the FMF Honda of Houston Winter Series, going eight for eight in moto wins in the Junior Supermini, 65cc Open, 85cc (7-11) and 65cc (10-11) classes. CATHY COVINGTON PHOTOS BY JOHN KISOR HOOKS, TX, JAN. 18-19 ast Texas was a beautiful setting, in spite of the cold, for round two of the FMF Honda of Houston Winter Series at Four States Motocross Park. Racing was delayed Saturday morning due to a hard freeze the night before, but the track soon thawed, and Ronny Jones worked his usual magic on the track. Terren O'Dell dominated all four of his classes, winning every moto of the Junior Supermini, 65cc Open, 85cc (7-11) and 65cc (10-1 I) classes. O'Dell rode a flawless Junior Supermini race. In the second moto, the excitement was behind him. O'Dell started out front, closely followed by Justin Carr and Tyler Steele. While O'Dell checked out, Carr and Steele put on a great show. Steel took over second on lap two, but Carr refused to give in. Though O'Dell went down on the last lap, he had such a vast lead that he had plenty of time to get up and remain in the lead. Steele rode hard to stay in second, and Carr finished third. The Senior Supermini class was one of the biggest of the day, with 18 riders. Kyle Cunningham jumped out front in moto one, with Ozzy Barbaree on his back tire. Barbaree gave it everything he had for all four laps but couldn't get around the high-flying Cunningham. The second moto began much like the first: Cunningham absconded with the holeshot, with Barbaree in tow. Sneaking into the mix was Nathan Cox of Tecumseh, Oklahoma. On lap two, Cox got around Barbaree and made it a three-way battle to the end. Cunningham finished first, followed by Cox and Barbaree. E 34 FEBRUARY 19, 2003' cue Jonathan Kerr returned to racing in Sunday's 125cc (16-24) class. This was his first race since the Loretta Lynn's Amateur Nationals in August. When the gate dropped, Kerr was the first one around the corner. Justin Jackson was a close second, and Jansin McCoy was a close third. By the fourth lap, it was clear nobody would catch the smoothriding Kerr. Jackson was a solid second. The battle was for third, between McCoy and Adam Turner. McCoy rode hard, but Turner finally passed him on lap four. Kerr got the second-moto holeshot, outbra king the rest of the pack. Kenny Dale Orr was second, with Turner third. McCoy got an awful start, finishing lap one in 13th. By lap two, McCoy had made his way to fourth, and on laps three and four he had a great battle with Bradley Stokes. Meanwhile, Kerr was gone. The second moto ended with Kerr in first, Turner in second, Orr in third and McCoy in fourth. Ronny Jackson jumped out with the 125cc (12-15) Youth first-moto holeshot. Taylor Painter was stuck to his back tire, with Nathan Cox and Branden Miller in pursuit. Before the end of the first lap, Painter had taken over the lead. Jackson continued to apply pressure until Painter made a mistake in the rhythm section on lap four, and Jackson jumped around him to take the first-moto win. Michael "Happy Meal" Thacker jumped out to the moto-two holeshot, with Painter second. Again, before the I e n e _ s Aces end of the first lap, Painter had taken over the lead. Jackson was way back in the pack, but he quietly made his way through the pack until he was right behind Painter, and the battle was on! Jackson again applied the pressure. Coming to the white flag, Painter's bike slowed, and Jackson jumped around him. Painter charged hard but never caught the JM Racing/Honda of Houston-backed Jackson, who took the overall win, with 'Painter second and Miller third. One of the most exciting races of the day was the 250cc Intermediate contest. In the first moto, Jonathan Kerr absconded with the holeshot, closely followed by Fisherville, Tennessee's Blair Miller. Though Miller was faster in the back jump section and took the lead, Kerr glided thropgh the big sweeper and moved to Miller's back tire, but he couldn't get around him. These two young men pushed each other so hard that they checked out on the rest of the pack. The second moto featured another great race between the two Yamaha riders. Kerr jumped out with the holeshot, but Miller jumped past Kerr in the back section, and off they went! Once again, they pushed each other so hard that they left the rest of the class behind. Kerr retook the lead on the last lap, and the bar-banging and plastic-rubbing began. Hard contact was made in the curve going to jump eight, and Kerr went down. Miller slowed and took the checkers but seemed very unsatisfied. In a show of sportsmanship, Miller immediately went to the downed Kerr, and the two congratulated each other after Kerr assured Miller that he was all right. eN Four States Motocross 'eric Hooks, Texas Results: Jenuery 18-19, Z003 [Round ZI 51 (4-6) AM STK: 1.
